How to get Golf AFM's to work on a mk3 GT or NZ

One of the biggest restrictions in the intake system on a mk3 GT or NZ apart from the airbox is the Airflow meter as its only got a tiny bore. I think the ones that fit from a Golf are from the Digifant powered mk2's, and you can often find them on ebay (I've got 2 off there for less than £15 inc. postage).

They are plug and play with bit of setting up, but they wont fit the standard airbox, so you'll probably need to get an induction kit, and as you wont need the warm air feed in future, you can remove the air temp switch from the throttlebody elbow, as it is just another restriction to airflow

now you need to fill the holes up, for the past year I've just used so insulation tape and its still going strong.

so the next thing to do is to remove the black top off the Airflow meters, so you can see the tensioning spring and wiper arm that tells the ecu whats happening. the top can be prised off with a screwdriver.

next you need a manometer its basically a u shaped peice of tubing with water in it, so you can measure the pressure of the flap in the AFM. I used airline for fishtanks, some cable clips and a peice of wood to make mine.

so now you can begin to change the AFM:-

1) with the standard GT setup and manometer connected to one of the holes in the throttlebody elbow warm the engine up. (cover the other hole up with tape, and the other end of the manometer should be left open).

2) when the engine is warm, make a note of the water level in the manometer and the position of the wiper arm in the AFM, then stop the engine.

3) unplug the lambda probe, so that the ecu is using the AFM to set the idle mixture

4) remove the GT AFM for the tube that connects it to the throttlebody elbow and force it over the Golf AFM (its a bit fiddly but it will go) and remove the rubber bung from the CO adjustment screw on the Golf AFM (its by the rubber connecting pipe) and also plug the golf AFM into the connecter that was on the GT AFM

5) restart the engine, with the golf AFM, and its will probably be coughing and spluttering, so to keep it running move the wiper arm in the AFM to where it was when you had the GT AFM connected

6) with an Allen key in the CO adjusting screw, turn it so that the wiper arm goes to that position automatically (the CO adjusting screw is an air bleed screw that allows the air to bypass the flap that offerates the AFM)

7) next adjust the spring tension that operates the flap, by undoing the screw and moving the geared wheel until the water level in the manometer is the same as when the GT afm was connected

8) do no.6 again for final adjustment

9) thats it done, just reconnect the lambda, disconnect the manometer and seal the holes up in the throttlebody elbow.

you may find that it needs a slight adjustment later, but that should be near enough spot on.

Better acceleration

Dom set mine up and it takes a while to do it cos you have to drive it for a couple of days and tinker with it before it is right

I'm looking to do this mod on my GT and I want to know what bits to purchase.

From your description Dom it looks like the air flow meter is that tiny little pink and black part with the metal clip. Am I right in saying this?

I typed air flow meter in on eBay and got this:

I'm a bit confused to be honest and that's just buying the bits! God knows what's going to happen when I try to set it up. If someone could post up what car it needs to be from 16v/8v? a picture and/or a part number it would help loads.

that pic is indeed an air flow meter. The pink thing in the first couple of pics is a temperature switch.

Its from an 8v that you need it. Theres a few engine choices but most late 80s early 90s vws with a 1.8 or 2.0 8V GTI engine have one that can be used.

I have just tackled the mod and am pleased with the result. Seems to rev more freely! Worth the £10 for the part (OK I splashed out £70 for a K&N filter also but you don't have to!)

so would thie unit be a direct replacement for this unit and also a bit of setting up?:

If you are asking whether or not that's the right part then yes it is.

And yes it will need setting up as optima21 has described above!

Nice how-to but one extra point....

make sure idle speed is the same when doing the manometer readings. Pressure varies greatly around idle so make sure you adjust idle speed to spec before you do the change and then once you have adjusted the flap...

Oh and the hose is a BLOODY TIGHT FIT!

i would like to fit a golf afm... i bought a GT engine BUT!! ..... i didn't get a air flow with it ... so I'm going to find it difficult to adjust?....

so what do i do ?!

can you help.. e.g turn co screw in by one full turn or so ..

no mate you need the gt airbox to get the reading off!!!!...so you idealy need to use a friends or something...

just had a thought...surely someone eg; optima [in the know] could set up a few of these on his so they run prettymuch right and sell them on at a proffit....id be interested??!!!!!!!!!!

i think that the afm setup would vary from car to car, ideally as they're mostly the same engine on paper it sounds easy but each engine may require different levels of setting up...

does anyone have a part number for the mk2 AFM. there is currently 2 mk2 GTi's in a local scrapyard and was thinking of getting the AFM off it for my polo GT... just want to make sure i get the right part :D

quick question, it may be a silly question, but-

can the mk2 golf gti 8v airbox be fabricated to fit in the mk3 polo engine bay to retain the oem look?

I think theres a great possibility it would be too tall to fit in the engine bay with the bonnet closed. By comparison the NZ/GT/G40 airboxes are quite shallow.

can you use a early mk3 2.0 gti afm and airbox?just wondering as i have a kn panel filter for one and would be a right result if i could

The Mk 3 Gti's use a air mass sensor which is different to the air flow meter used in the Mk2 Gti digifant.

The Mk2 Golf digifant airbox is at least twice as deep and much bigger width and depth compared to the Mk 3 GT airbox. It would not fit.
