AEE breakdown, cracked/ broken piston

Featured Replies

hi guys,

i was recenty driving down the m65, late at night so i thought id open the taps a lil. i got to 100mph and there wasnt much more to go, i out this down to bad fuel managment. 1.3 NZ mpi management with a 1l pump....i no I'm asking for trouble but i hadnt had any issues so far. BUT then at 100 power loss, it cuts out. so i pulled over and shes dead. looked for signs of a problem and sod all. i keep trying to crank her and she gets better and better the more she cools.....i had checked all the obvs signs like low water and all that crap. all good.

i eventually got it going and shes on 3 cyls and a metalic rattle from the bottom end somewhere. got her home and drained out less than 1L of oil!! she had burnt the rest.

i found few metal flakes in my oil pan. but no signes of crank/conrod damage. so spark plugs came out. cyl 3's plug was mashed, full of metal flakes(same as the sump) i got worried. head came off and BAM! piston crowns missing 1/3 of it!!!!

stripped it out and heres pics....

yep. fucked. BUT the cylinder liner is perfectly normal, my only concern was the cyl head. the piece/s that came off escaped. there were no loose bits at all left in the engine. the inlet valve face is covered but the seat/ guide and port are perfectly clean and as if nothing had happened. the exhaust valve on the otherhand isnt so lucky (as you may expect) valve seat was pelted with the chapnel (cant spell) and as was the vavle stem and port. there is no dents or anything on any of them. I'm hoping if i get some cutting paste i should just be able to re-seat the valve after getting rid of the shit???

I'm after a new piston and i hope to rebuild the engine.

i do have a spare engine so I'm in no rush to fix it. any advice or comments would be greatly appreceated.

get a 1.4 afh in there ha ha ha ha

Fuck! Any idea how it happened? Surely isn't down to fueling?

I'd definitely hone the bore though, and check for wear on the relevant valve guide.

i haven't taken a torch to the guide just yet max and I'm hopefully getting a honing tool soon, as i said I'm in no rush NZ will be in for edision and I'm on a hunt for a new piston. which will be hard to come by i reckon.

my friend was talking to a 'mature' mechanic and he said this happens when the engines been running lean, no fuel lubericant and the lack of fuel will cause more heat to form from the lack of lube and the temp of the explosion.

fuck off matt u prick

Get it on gt management with a propper pump then dude, or on a set of carbs.

got carbs need manifold and filters then I'm ready. have no tools or materials atm to make the manifold base. neeed to find local metal shop.

Fook me.. Is this my old 1.6 AEE?

Hope you get it sorted mate! Am keen to see what you've done with it

thats not even piston meltage which occurs with under fuelling, just looks as if the piston had a weakness and just let go.

Fried piston rings anyone? hahaha

oh shit man, not good hope you get it sorted. i still got problems wiv 1.3 doin ma frickin head in

Breakages like that are more likely due to pre-ignition than to weak mixture or any other sort of overheating. That is a good example of pure metal fatigue.

Regards.
