Right a few of you may remember that in March 2009 I bought a G40.

Those who do will know its been sitting idle awaiting rebuilding since I blew it up a day after I bought it.

Even so I go on about it all the time saying its on the road to being rebuilt etc etc etc...

Well a few months ago I acquired a unit in which to work on my cars.

And in the corner sits the G40

Sitting up on axel stands feeling a little sorry for itself

Still looking in good condition though

And it turned over (although didn't start) today for the first time in 2 and a half years!!! Video below to prove!

I'll try and keep this updated until it is finally going again.

Kitchen, male and female toilets and a store room.

Its perfect to work in for a whole day

Bottom end has been rebuilt with a fresh piston and new rings etc.

It will start...eventually.

I'd live in that unit

nice unit lad! always good to have a few other mates around working on bits too, keeps you motivated, although i quite enjoy just pottering around on the car by meself.

what happened when it went? did you have much history on the engine prior? spec?

Yup cranked it over a few times with the hall sender unplugged to build up oil pressure and make sure it was turning over with good compression etc.

But that ran the battery out of juice so when I went for a proper start-up it didn't turn fast enough.

Battery will be fully charged for a new run tomorrow though :)

Its got some fresh petrol in it and all the ignition stuff is new so it should have spark.

Just need to check a few things, make sure the battery has full charge and I'll give it a go.

Can't wait to heard the charger whine again :)

HELP!!!!!

I'm so close yet so far.

Fully charged battery went on, checked and double checked everything was connected up as it should be.

Fuel pump is working and delivering the fuel fine.

All the ignition stuff from the leads to the plugs is brand new

But the fecker still won't start.

Turns over fine BUT when I put the key in the ignition the indicator warning light lights up (and no the indicators aren't on)

So what does this mean?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

could be wee bit dampness in the loom or car since its sat steven, indicator could be a dodgee stock, all the connectors are plug and play so unlikely any of the connectors are wrong as i know your carefull that way.

fuel lines the right way round for the starting issue?

I've got spare stalks so I'll try them.

Got the fuel lines the right way rough, double checked those (Got covered in petrol haha)

Car has been dry for the past 4 months and I've had most of the loom out to tidy it etc so I don't think its dampness thats causing the issue.

Going to test injectors and spark tonight see how far I get with that.

Have you had the dizzy bolts out and cranked it both ways while turning it over? Mine was out on the cam timing, by a tooth, which threw the ignition timing right out.

I assume you've checked for a spark?

if youve had the loom out may be worth while checking the normal culprit which is the two plugs by the coil and the one on the coil are the right way round lots of people including myself have done this

Yeah the coil and the headlight loom plug which in VW's great wisdom can be plugged into one another.

Had a good go at the car today with the help of Scott and Ross on here (cheers guys)

But there was an odd noise and now there is a slight metallic sound when turning it over which has got me worried.

Think I might pull the head off and do a small upper end rebuild just for piece of mind and the fact I've got the time and space to do things properly now.

Well worked hard last night and stripped the engine down to get the head off.

Got it off and it seems the cam timing was a little out...resulted in bending all of the exhaust valves.

So tonight I'll be out with the little suction stick and grinding paste and putting in the exhaust valves I luckily have spare.

Made a nice little bed to place the head on my workbench

Can't really see but there is bendy valves there

So begun the head strip down

Out came one bendy valve

And another

Luckily I found a spare head in my shed, so once I get a new gasket set I'll throw the spare head on.

Hopefully it will go on as easy as it came off.

So what would of caused that after sitting for so long?
