Hi guys

Ok so last night we got about 15 cm of snow, happy days lol. This morning I had to risk driving to go shopping, it was my first attempt of driving in the snow but tbh it went pretty well no near death experiences lok just took it slow and gentle.

Any way I got to a stretch of 60 mph single lane road, it had a a big snow.trail in the centre of the road so I was driving at about 40 and trying to avoid any mahoosive bits of ice lol, and failed. It caught my back box and rippped it clean off:(( all I seen was it bouncing down the road. Wacked the hazards on to let the lorry behind know, couldn't stop on a road like that so had to carry on, went back about 15 min later and it was gone so no idea what happened to it.

So now iv been left with

A 1.0 polo that sounds like a mustang, its unbearable in the car.

A rather large out ward bulge in the rear valence

But lucky it didn't cause any one to crash, or make a mess of there car so its not all bad

Stupid for doing 40 in the snow really. No wonder you damaged the car. I'd be doing half that speed in those conditions, and only if caught out. I just dont bother going out in the car. You should have walked to the shops, you'd still have a back box then

^^ I did 60 on a pure white road, occasionally overtaking cars doing 20 if that. I know they thought i was a prat, but i think the same of them - if you can't hack the snow, get off the road.

The 6n is really good in the snow - unlike the Golf, which got stuck. To be fair, the 6n's Pilots have plenty of tread, but the Golf's wider front tyres have seen better days. Still, the 6n's engine is far better suited to snow, and it's a far more communicative car to drive.

Shame i didn't get the MK2 on the road in time :(

Yeah my standard 6n was pretty decent in snow, cut through the snow well, how it has now I still think its faster to walk anywhere up to 20 miles haha

my bog standard mk2 was fantastic on snow, the 6n2 not so much but still good. doesn't matter this year though because we aint getting snow in these parts.

Well the 6n might be good in the snow, but it couldn't deal with black ice this morning. First time i've stacked a car in 11 years.

T40 was 'interesting' to say the least. very gentle adjustments on the accelerator to avoid torque steering round in circles!!

Certainly is. Apologies to 6n valver fans because it was tidy, original, and about to go up for sale on here..

It was nasty and surprising, it was slippery being wet and icy, with frosted windscreens and black ice everywhere. The car had had a few twitches to keep me on my toes but when this happened it was surprising.

I came to a junction and crawled over it in second, grabbed third and carried it around the incline bend in third. Accelerating uphill, it broke traction and started to go wide:

I played with lift-off and steering re-catch to try and get grip back but the front axle was just lost, i just couldn't guide it round on the grass:

It caught this rut with tree stumps in it, the subframe, wishbones and gearbox ploughed into the stumps and flipped the car up into the air:

The car vaulted a 4ft fence before landing on it's roof, bouncing onto both sides, before landing back onto it's roof again..

I wasn't wearing my seatbelt, i got punched out the seat by the airbag when i realised to my surprise it was rolled, then gravity went out the window and i didn't know where the next impact was gonna come from. One was being flung into the passenger side windscreen and pillar, next i was in the air again, next it was the seats, then i landed in the smashed passenger window.

I'm sore as fuck, back and neck ache, but i walked away. I was hardly moving, yet i still rolled 6ft in the air - you have no idea how easy it is to flip a car i tell you.

You can drive fast in shit conditions and be confident, any idiot can, simple fact is momentum and the huge mass of a car + a momentary loss of grip can go badly wrong, as above.

I know, this may have been slow but it really shows something. You can be in full control at 100mph but when control is taken away unexpectedly even at a slow speed there's nothing you can do.

I bumped this particular topic and added to it purely to show this point. I haven't had an accident in eleven years and even then it was someone else hitting my car. I travel 50 miles a day and use to drive for a living. I passed my test twenty years ago. I'm genuinely competent.

And yet i was caught out by a puddle of black ice driving uphill away from a crossroads.

Shit can happen, it's a heads up to chill and be aware.

And that boys and girls is one reason why you wear your belt, or for some of the older ones; clunk click every trip!

At least you walked away only a bit sore and you don't have to pay to fix the fence that you missed (unless it was the car that took the top strip of barbed wire off?)

Even a skilled rally driver with all the correct equipment would be struggling to do 60 on a public road. maybe able to control it around the bends etc....but thats not the problem, some plank pulls out infront of you, normal conditions you could probably stop... in the snow, well your completely fucked, you cant swerve out the way and you certainly cant slam on the anchors.... 99% chance of impact, that 1% just being pure luck that you avoid everything.

Insane.

I hope rolling your car has made you realise that doing even 20 can cause you to have an accident, let alone 60!! And that you were infact the prat?

People seem to misunderstand the 60 in snow bit, obviously i'm talking about trunk roads (bypasses etc) where it's just barriers and no junctions. Past schools, shops etc and it's more like 10mph - and 20 normally.

Yeah you were unlucky...kinda testing fate being cocky about it though really

man, to be honest, i think you should join the olympic high jump team. thats impressive clearing that fence with an entire car, plus thn we may win something glad your okay though! dayummn son!

yeah nothing wrong with 60 on a 3 lane a road ect, as i was doing in the volvo... pretty jokes overtaking people sideways at that speed when the arse end kicks out but again, it was at slow speeds it caught me out too. ploughed it straight into a kurb becuase of a bit of ice. snapped wishbone and bent control rod!

Yeah it's a bit of a lesson but i'm happy to be able to see the amusing side of it.

I wore my seatbelt and came out unscathed apart from shattered glass in my hand, fell out of the car as i didnt realise the car was perched on a hedge

what are the coppers doing about it? they tried hitting me with points untill they did a road investigation and found out there was another car involved.

A copper was on his way to work not a minute behind me, pulled up whilst i was brushing myself down, he could see what'd happened and kindly he gave me a lift home.
