I'm thinking of converting my front brakes from standard 10mm discs to the VW2 calipers with 20mm vented discs (found on G40s and suchlike, 239mm dia) when I build up my B plate shell.

Will I need the carriers as well if I'm getting them from a donor mk2 golf 8v GTI?

This guy wants £70 for carriers, calipers and discs. So if I can get away without using the carriers I can save some money.

Arnt the mk2 gti's bigger than 239mm? I've got a set of pads for a mk2 gti (not sure if they are 8v or 16v/) lying around and they arnt the same as vw2.

Mk1 golf gti have the same setup for definate.

Does your polo have the early style brakes (the square pad ones) or the later type?

When I ebay mk2 8v golf GTI discs it comes up with 239mm vented so I'm gonna go ahead and get them. is £40 a fair price for two calipers?

8v gti's had 239's, 16v's had 256's.

I think you will need carriers and calipers if you have a B-plate as these had the old style postage stamp brakes.

The coilovers modified mk3 struts, currently fitted with Girling 54s which I can't afford to keep. :(

My carriers will be coming from my G plate bready, which has the later pad style.

You only need the VWII calipers, your G-plate bready carriers are compatible.

E reg bready+ VW II callipers + 239x20mm vented disks , as MikeyMK said it fits bolt on, and you don't need cariers

sorry to bring a month old thread back up, i was searching my question and found this, it makes sense to ask on here rather than a fresh topic.

Can someone confirm that to fit vw2 brakes on my 83 mk2 (currently running the original square pad brakes) if i were to fit mk3 carriers (i have some available) to the existing mk2 legs i could then fit the calipers, pads and discs?

i.e. is there a difference in the legs or just the carriers?

No difference between teh legs that would effect the mounting of the carriers. So mk3 carriers and vwII brakes would work fine

For reference, there is another carrier that will fit the polo that is supposed to be used for vented discs, its fitted to the mk1 golf, all sciroccos and the polo g40, but it's a lot wider, which limits what wheels you can fit. I've used VW1 carriers with VW2 calipers for years though without issue.

that is interesting, it makes sense since the vw2 setup is wider than the vw1. Although surely it can't limit wheel fitting that much since g40's were fitted with 13" ra's which can't have been that spacious inside?

It would be interesting to know the size difference in carriers, can't have been that much surely?

Something else for reference though, when i was looking up new brake discs and pads, the vw1 pads were 12mm thick, the vw2 pads 10mm.

Most 5.5" or more VW wheels are fine, but some aftermarket stuff doesn't fit without spacers, such as ats classics.

Yeah the earlier VWII carriers had a brace which fouled some wheels. I'm pretty sure the G40 was the last car to use these.

6n's fitted with VWII's and vented 239mm discs didn't have this brace, though their carrier was part of the hub casting as opposed to a bolt-on item. Early braced version was a typical example of over-engineering practice, prioritized by VW of the era, me thinks.
