Lowered spring and shock and coilover kit pricelist and guide from £135 Mk1 Mk2 Mk3 Coupe GT G40

Featured Replies

There are various shock and spring combinations for the Polo Mk1, Mk2 or Mk3, this guide should help your decision. I put this together to have it all in one place. If you need more info on any one kit or other peoples reviews there are other threads in this section/on the forum for each individual kit. Although some like the budget I removed due to having 30 pages of the same question over and over.

First of all come my budget kits, sold for years on here, produced by a German Tuning company (Particular makes can vary depending on time of order) For the money they are excellent. These kits are fully TUV approved, and come with a 2 year warranty. They are the same as alot of other suspension kits out there just with a different name and cheaper pricetag. The shocks have been shortened to match the lowered springs.

Obviously the lower you go the harsher the ride will be. 60/40 is generally the best compromise between looks, handling and practicality. The 40mm kit still allows you to drive over speed bumps quickly, 80mm is a harsh ride, but arguably looks the best. They are easy enough to fit yourself, have a look in a haynes manual for instructions on how to fit, or there is a thread in the faq section.

There is another thread full of pictures howing various wheel/tyre combinations on various Polos to help you decide your preferred ride height

All the kits are height adjustable at the rear. A 60/40 kit will go 60/60, or 60/80. 60/40 means 60mm front 40mm rear. So your 80/60 kit will go 80/80 etc. There are 7 adjustment settings on most kits to help create your preferred stance. The front height is set.

All prices are delivered.

AP

The next level up from the budget kits are the AP uprated spring and shock kits, offering an improved ride quality much similar to the kits in the next price range. Very good attention to detail in the spring and damper ratings meaning the AP kits offer an excellent ride quality and well balanced kit for not much money.

Usual progressively wound spring with a shortened piston stroke on a 30% uprated damper, powdercoated throughout, German TUV quality approved and come complete with a 2 year manufacturer’s warranty.

Comes as a kit of 4 springs, 4 dampers, and all required parts to fit to the car.

Ride height choices are...

40/30
60/30
60/50

Any of the above will give a lovely even stance. The 60/30 will give a nose down stance. This kit will fit all Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 Polos.

The rears are ride height adjustable like the budget kits allowing you to set it to how you prefer

£240 delivered will take around a week to come through.

Others - KW/Weitec/H&R

Next in the price range you will get the KW, Weitec and H&R, which being honest I can’t get competitive prices on at the moment.
The KW and Weitec kits have a softer spring rating than the other 60mm kits which means you get a better ride but a touch more body roll. Where as the H&R kit is a bit firmer, still a decent quality kit like the kw and weitec, but my personal opinion is it isn’t as well matched as the price demands. KW/Weitec dampers have more progressive valving

Anyway for that money from experience the Budget kit with Gaz front inserts will give a better ride and handling than the above 3 due to being able to tailor the ride quality to suit your needs.

Bilstien B12 and Eibach spring kit

The Eibach spring with Bilstein B12 shock kit come next. This will lower a G40 25mm, and a normal polo 40mm. An excellent kit with what is probably the best ride and general quality all round.

£470 delivered.

"Two of the biggest names in the tuning world have joined forces to create the ultimate handling enhancement, the jointly branded Eibach and Bilstein B12 spring and damper package.

The two German suspension giants have enjoyed a close working relationship for decades, with countless OEM, motorsport and defence applications rolling on bespoke suspension packages tailored to precise client requirements. The new B12 kits put the same levels of build quality, fit and finish within the reach of the average enthusiast.

The B12 packages consist of four Eibach springs and four matched Bilstein dampers, making for the ultimate ‘real-world’ handling upgrade that balances unparalleled ride quality with exemplary handling and poise.

The springs have been pre-stressed, shot peened and tempered, before receiving a two-stage zinc-phosphate and electrostatic epoxy coating for a long and durable life. The dampers are of a superior monotube gas and oil design (most OEM units are twin-tube). The springs come with a comprehensive 5 year, unlimited mileage warranty and the damper units with 2 years. As one might expect from these two Teutonic titans, full TUV approval for every single application comes as standard.

The combined effect of the complete B12 kit is a car with less body roll that corners with vastly improved dynamics. Thanks to reduced squat and dive, acceleration and braking characteristics are also often enhanced."

Koni

Koni sport kits are also available, please give me a PM for a up to date price. Excellent quality dampers with nice progressive valving

Coilovers

Due to the combined hub and strut setup on the earlier polos, coilovers basically aren’t cheap like other models. The struts require custom machining to shorten the strut, lower the steering arm to keep the geometry as close to stock as possible. This is the case with the custom Gaz coilovers lower in the thread, but recently TA have introduced their own line without the need for a strut exchange.

I had some input with the setup on these, the new springs were modified so the coilovers will go low out of the box and dampers to suit these ratings.

They will see a genuine 120mm if your chassis will allow. Just add wheel bearings with hubs and away you go.

I ran these on my turbo mk3 at around a 70mm drop and it was great fun with a better ride than the spring and shock kits at the same height. The lowered steering arm makes a large difference in fixing the altered geometry from lowering the polo and the result is reduced bump steer.

Full TUV approval and a 2 year warranty.

These come in at £445 delivered.

Just the fronts are £340 delivered

Gaz

At the top of the pile is the Gaz kit, these do require an old pair of struts to be machined.

Custom made to order Gaz coilovers which come in at £700, they come with a 2 year warranty, the rears have been chrome nickel plated, and the fronts black zinc coated.

These are completley custom. So, if you want to choose your spring rates, you can. If you want a kit that'll drop it on the floor with minimal travel, just for general road use, or you want them built for the track, its up to you. Just let me know at the time of ordering. The spring rates for a typical road kit will be 250lb/ft front and 180 lb/ft rear. The springs are interchangable, so if at a later date you wish to change the rating, its easily done as you know what your starting with!

The steering arms have been lowered a suffient amount to correct the suspension geometry and angle of the steering arms when lowering a polo, they will be fully ride height and dampening rebound adjustable all round. The rear shocks are bump and rebound adjustable, which is done via an adjusting nob at the side of the damper on a 3:1 ratio. The fronts are top adjustable.

Needs to be on a strut exchange basis, its easy enough to get a set from the scrappy, or here on the forum. The coilovers will take 2-3 weeks to be machined and made up.

A finished set will look like...

KW V1 Coilover kit

KW offer a coilover kit for the early polo, this is done on a strut exchange basis. The kit is a very high quality kit, zinc coated and featuring their variant one dampers. The dampers have been custom tuned dampers to provide the ideal balance between ride quality and body control on the road. Full TUV approval, shortened body, uprated and shortened dampers with excellent progressive valving.

They will go very low out of the box and are made to order from your struts. The struts need to be in good condition or they will be refused, and usually take about 3-5 weeks to complete. Struts can be bought from KW for £360, or this can be paid as a deposit untill your old struts are recieved.

£995 delivered.
