Ready Steady Bready

the car is a 1985 Polo GL 1.3 with about 180k on the clock

the car has had 3 owners from new the last one had it for 18 years and kept it in really good condition

the reason i got the car was back in 2010 me my brother and freind decided to all go down to the nurburgring in germany for a bit of a holiday and then that sort of got put to one side when we entered the 2010 europe scally rally so we needed a car for less than £100 and after searching the polo popped up on the trader for £90 and we bought it went to pick it up and was amazed how well it ran, the last owner was a engineer and had serviced it every 3000 miles for 18 years!! all in the log book he had even used the hains manual and to make his own adjustments to the engine to improve it and then wrote to vw with his findings they even wrote back to him and all this is in the log book, so after getting the car we decided to simply put some new breaks on and some new tyres and a new paint job (cheap paint job) then a service and mot and some new oil, the trip itself would take is 2000 miles through france, switzerland and italy through the alps and down to venice and onto rimini on the east cost and once you get there you are supposed to scrap your ruined car and fly back, well the polo was absolutely amazing did not once break down or have any problems at all and ran as if it was new out of the shop while newer cars were left at the roadside in peices and heaps of blown up engines the polo just ploughed on so when we go to the finish like we though bugger it we will just drive it home and 24 hours of non stop driving we made it back, well that was 2 years ago and since then it was kept in a garage for a year and left and then my brother took it and it was parked outside for another year in the snow and rain so after 2 years of neglect my brother moved down south and left the car.

ok so parts that are on order and need replacing
gear knob gator
air filter
fuel filter
oil filter

does any one know where i can get some water pipes/coolant hose for the engine from I'm trying to source the parts but not having any luck?

and VW want to charge me £70

breakers, put a wanted ad on here?

on another note car looks pretty cool with the flakey paint! makes it look a bit ratty racer.

if you are still planning to strip it off though, you can get a scraper that uses stanley knife blade. going by the way the white paint has flaked, i'm guessing you didnt prep the red paint. i.e. you sprayed over it without sanding it first, so you should be able to just scrape it and it will flake off. just make sure you key the old paint next time and it wont flake again

yeh when we bought it we were only going to use it for a week or 2 in the rally and then scrap it in italy so it just got a quick spray to make it look good but that was 2 years ago lol so now want to do a proper job and the gf refuses to drive it lookin as it does hahaha so I'm ganna get it all done black i recon i have a m8 at a QRC thats going to do it for me but i want to save as much money as possible so i want to prep it ready for the paint and strip the old stuff of myself, will have to to take it right back to the metal for the new paint?

so what had the orig owner modded and written to vw about? just intrested

i wouldnt take it back to bare metal unless there are rust issues to deal with. bare metalling an area that isnt rusted is just making work for yourself imo

so work started this weekend, first thing done was to take the bonnet and the two front wings off, the bonnet was easy but the wings were a pain in the arse, the screws were covered in underseal to the point were you could not actually see them so 45 minutes on each panel just to dig the screws out

VWpolo2.jpg

VWPolo5.jpg

then the rocker cover and the timing belt cover came off and were treated to break cleaner and a wire brush to get all the rust and dirt and oil off, then new timing belt went on and then an hour getting the timing done properly and using what i can only describe and a police speed camera gun with a bright torch on to set it up, its now perfect :)

still just waiting to see if i can source some water pipes which I'm struggling with at the minute

then got both front wheels off and started on the drivers side so got the new gator on and new pads and disks and everything cleaned up and rust removed, then for the passenger side got the old gator off which had both spilt but on taking the SV joint off it all fell to bits and the ball barrings rolled off any way got the new gators on and all the new grease on but at the drive shaft end there was no movement in it at all so took it into the garage and used the parts washed and found the internal casing has broken and made the frame loose its tension so picking and new one up and fittin on thursday.

ok back to this, have left it for a while due to work and money, but now trying to put some time in with a friend of mine who is doing all the mechanic stuff for me, we have had a problem with the carb witch I believe is a 2E2 for some reason when you press the throttle the fuel is injected but the butterfly does not move it stops in the idle position its like there is a spring missing from the linkages or something, now I have had a look at the exploded diagram and I cant see any spring needs to be there.

has any one else noticed this before, I have heard these carbs and renowned for been problematic, and help you guys can give would be great I really wanna get this build back up and running so once this is sorted the engine will be good to go and I can start on the body work

cheers guys

Keep up the good work
