Santa Pod Suspension/Tyres Debate

Featured Replies

Decent tyres help massively, as does soft supension.

Also, get a nice cold air feed on there, that helped mine a bit after it was suffering from heat soak!

I was gonna make a bracket with a suction cup. And have a cigarette lighter plug :) but you ain't got a spare lambda boss in your exhaust man!

Suspension and tyres are key! People cry about no traction in early polos with rock hard suspension haha, mines fine thanks!

Soft suspension helps 1/4 mile times?!

With FWD you want to reduce weight transfer to the rear, that's why all the quick cars have uber stiff rear springs (or no springs!) and their arses in the air.

G40 cup cars have suspension so stiff that when Kam hit a pot hole is his bready with them fitted it cracked his windscreen. G40 cup cars don't seem to have too much trouble with traction, Just saying.

I was talking about the front set-up, should have said really.

The two different occasions i took the my breadvan GT down the strip at santa pod, literally the only modification i had done between both events was lower the front down on philJ shocks and springs (people who have seen the car at last few shows will know) and the times were a minimum of 0.6 seconds different, both events were similar weather conditions, but 0-60ft times were showing big differences, which wasn't un-expected as the car just bounced around on the harder suspension, with the standard set-up it was much easier to stop the wheels spinning.

G40 cup cars aren't designed for 1/4 mile times!

My mate found 0.8 secs in 1/4 by stiffening his rear dampers lol. Hence why I launch on handbrake so it takes some of the initial movement out of bushes

Doesn't matter what they are designed for, they have rock solid suspension (much stiffer than mine) and they don't have issues getting off the line cleanly.

So solid suspension doesn't necessarily mean that you will suffer from traction problems, set the car up well and you won't have an issue getting it off the line. Inflate your front tyres to 40psi and fit a flywheel so light that it almost turns your throttle into an on off switch and traction will no doubt become an issue

There's many different ways of different things.

My car is comfortable and doesn't spin up to fuck like others with hard suspension, so I don't give a fuck

I knew i had stiff suspension for a reason, because racecar

Yeah but they're on tarmac, not slippery rubber. They also very lightly feather in the power, and the people driving them have a great deal of driver talent.

Will you have your slicks on at action mark?

Slippery rubber?

Aye, the start of the strip is layered in rubber, think how slippy it was when we ran down it!

It's seriously slippy when there's no rubber on it. Rubber gives the grip, which is why when people keep breaking their cars and they have to keep mopping up; the rubber gets cleaned off and the high powered/traction limited stuff starts to struggle. Best times are always on days when there's been some good track prep and no-one's car's shat itself on the line.

Steve Pitt's rally/cup car always launched quite nicely. Wonder what suspension Yoof used when he ran a 12.5s too? ;) Though admittedly with longer, stiffer, springs at the rear. Soft suspension is not the drag racing way, at least not for FWD.

At what point was it slippery max? I remember my trainers sticking to it while walking on it, it was like walking through tar

Think about it dude, its a lot harder to launch it succesfully on the strip than it is on say tarmac!

Lol , i must admit its a funny surface i was surprised on my very first run at Spring Fest how much i wheelspan , considering the lack of power  .

Driving and launch style can dial some of that out though , a diff would help massively though at least then you could warm the tyres properly at the burn out .

Slicks work for me i was getting very little wheelspin using them , i have 2 sets now of different sizes so will see how that effects the gearing , my biggest problem now is the GT box .

Anyway FWD launch

Not sure if sirius, Max think about it before you write anymore.

i didn't find that max

my mk2 was impossible for me to get a clean launch whether on the road or strip, but my blue mk2f was much easier to get a nice clean launch at the pod than it was on the road. at the pod i just sat at the biting point with the revs matched and could pretty much side step the clutch and gun it with little more than a little tyre squeal, and that was on nankangs

on the road it would of lit the tyres up doing that

Wa? Now i don't know if your being serious lol

Whatever the surface is at the pod, its had a lot less adhesion to my tyres than it has on the road!

I found pod quite slippery. Pod is the only place I've ever span the wheels in 3rd gear.

Mark I got bored watching that video and was impressed how long the guy could stand still for. Then realise was slowmo.

Can I try some slicks? :)

might be worth reading the below post again max

maybe there had been a few breakages before you got on the strip, or maybe they didn't put a lot of effort into track prep the day you were on it. either way santa pod should be a lot grippier (is that even a real word?) than a normal road. after-all it has to deal with 1000+bhp drag cars firing themselves off the line

Its just a disagrement nick

Guy, your used to much bigger power/weight ratio cars going down there and on the road, so your used to a lot of wheel spin wherever you are, whatever the surface.

Taking the GT down, with just 75hp, it was spinning up off the line whatever i did, and then again in second. It NEVER does that on the road, anywhere near. This is with decent yokohoma A539's.

So to me, i drew the conclusion that the surface at the pod is slippy.

Pod will be slippery unless you get heat in the tyres.

Driving a kart on a track covered in hot sticky rubber is shit until there's heat in them.

Hence drag slicks, crazy!
