Unfortunately i have a late afh and i want to go low so inevitably i have to modify the oil pick up, i can chop it and weld it no problem, just not too sure how atm, anybody else done this?

i've gotta do this in the not too distant future. it's no real help to you now but i plan on testing some weld on a scrap piece of the pipe and if that works out then i'll weld it, if not i'll be getting it brazed. i can't see any reason that it wouldn't weld ok tho as long as your careful not to blow the fuck out of it as it is fairly thin if memory serves

You don't need to cut anything, only need to bend it.

First the support arms, there straight like your arms when you're about to start doing press ups. They need to be like your arms when your nose is near the ground.

Then just bend the two bends a few more degrees each.

All you need is s blow torch to soften the steel, well you might do it without, but it'd be easier to do a good job. Wash it out with petrol first, so you don't get burnt oil flakes in there.

like you say this is really only an issue if you've got the later AFH bottom end 98> as it uses the oil pump driven directly off the crank, early ones use the chain driven pump like on a mk3 polo, so you can just swap the pickup pipe over to fit a mk3 sump.

I have had both bottom ends, and just shortened the pickup pipe and TIG'd it back together, i just measured the difference in sump depths and cut the relevant amount out.

luckily my current 16v bottom end has the older style pump which did make life a bit easier

Pulled it off today, it's i don't think bending it will do the trick, it won't give me enough room. i've gotta cut it, but i don;t want to take too much off. I need to know by exactly how much the mk3 is shorter than the afh?

It's literally the length of the cone that is different isn' it?

capable of 2" front engine lift, 1" rear..... on 8v anyway..... how much more sump clearance do you need?
