Volkswagen refuse to tell me my gearbox number

Featured Replies

Hello Guys,

hoping for a little help, the fifth gear in my gearbox has stopped working. It won't go in at all, all other gears work fine. This leads me to believe gearbox has gone! I have contacted volkswagen they want 1600 for a replacement gearbox and I really doubt my car is worth that any more. Looking on ebay I can't find exactly what gearbox I need. I was hoping someone here could advise me on what to do and the gearbox code itself.

my engine code is ASY

Volkswagen polo SDI 1.9 47KW or w/e that means.

registered 2005

I have had a quick look through my service book and can't seem to find the gearbox code at all.

Symptoms:

At first gear used to just about go in and as soon as I put my foot on the accelerator, it would pop out.

Now gear refuses to go into 5th gear, at all :(.

My mechanic will change a gearbox for £120, however I can't seem to find replacement box. Is there any way my existing gearbox could be repaired or is it cheaper to just buy a second hand gearbox and change it :)

Appreciate any help guys

thanks Aj

should be on the sticker in the boot

If you can't find the sticker, try phoning your nearest TPS outlet as they will have access to the info

thanks a lot for the reply guys, found out the code is GSA :). Eurocarparts want £722.00 to take mine, repair and give me another one.

Someone has suggested that the gear box linkage might need adjusting. Will let you know how I get on. Again your help is much appreciated.

thanks aj

The linkage, possibly. I don't know how similar these are to the 085 boxes (in the Polo's before yours), but, if they are, then the 5th is common to jumping and can be repaired with a simple 5 minute job.

Basically, the side of the gearbox comes off (can be done in the car), the Rose-joint is adjusted and you've got 5th again. Don't try and keep putting it in, you'll just do more damage.

Can get used boxes on the bay for cheap. £120 to do a box swap is reasonably good tbf.

Pretty sure though, the newer Polo's use 02* boxes (same as the Golf), so if you can find an SDI Golf, it'll be the same box..

Same engine code usually means same box..

okay guys with your help and prodding volkswagen and my mechanic I managed to work out my gearbox code GSA, however trying to find a gearbox is almost impossible with one on ebay, however there is one listed for a petrol 1.2 polo :-/. Now i'm really confused on what I should do next, rang eurocarparts want 700 quid to recon my gearbox.

Does anyone know if a GSA gearbox out of a petrol 1.2 will fit a 1.9 sdi polo ?

thanks aj

Read the reply above , can you fix it before getting another gearbox?, I've heard of using s diesel box on a petrol car but not a petrol on a diesel....

hello all,

after around 3 months of messing around and 450 quid down the drain my gearbox is still having problems. 5th gear doesn't work. I gave it to a place to repair my box, they replaced the selector, the cogs and a pin bearing inside the box. Every weekend I go to my mechanics place and he "fixes" my box, the car drives fine for 80 to 100 miles and then either 5th gear starts jumping out or does not engage full stop (not both at the same time, one happened @ week 1 and the other @ week 2.)

I'm mega frustrated with this shit car now, please if anyone could advise me i'd be greatful. Ps. I looked at the tutorials about the link adjustment and its definitely the box itself thats fucked, i'm sick of taking it back...

Thanks AJ

Coulda just got a second hand gearbox put in there for less, the main problem here seems to be your choice of mechanic..

sounds more like a shit mechanic than a shit car

yes agreed, but seeing as i've replaced almost everything in the box. I was wondering if anyone on here knew about gearboxes and could help me fix mine lol....

so turns out my box had around 100ml of oil in it. Its had new oil and 5th doesn't slip / grind / whine or anything......

Stupid mechanic <- FOR SURE.

thanks AJ

Was gonna say have you checked oil

Wouldve cost you ALOT less. sounds like what happened to one of my polos. shame you had to waste so much cash for something so simple!!

the box was definitely fucked, most of the box disappeared. I.e. 5th gear, the cogs the cover just under wheel arch of passenger side door. He replaced the cogs in front of me and other parts on side of the box also.

Just a shame I figured out after a bought a second box to replace this one with and now i've got a spare box I need to get rid off and it owes me £250 fml.... all in all i've spent £650 to get my box sorted.

Yes I know I spent way too much, but this is due to being lazy and not researching enough.....

lesson learned will definitely research before parting with my money next time.
