Having a few running issues with a 6n and want to rule out coolant temperature sensor issue

problem is there is two, under the distributor is a 4pin like my old 6n and a 2pin? need to know which does what?

The 4 pin is the one for the ecu & temp gauge, the other one is to cut the AC if it gets close to overheating

Cheers nigel, may aid me in my fault finding quest

If you have a multimeter you can do a resistance test to see if the sensor is giving the correct resistance for a set temperature

If you check the resistance between pins 1 & 3 Blue/Grey & Brown/White wires are for the ECU, you should see a resistance of around 2Kohms @ 30 degC and around 300 ohms @ 80 degC

Pins 2 & 4 Yellow/Red & Brown/White wires are for the temp gauge and should give the same resistance values

I have a new four pin (yellow) sensor up for grabs if you need one.

Thanks vic but I already have a good spare if needed, just wasn't sure about the other sensor.

did wonder if the car was running rich as its a common problem but doubt I will be trying the sensor now as upon removal of the sparkplugs it seems the cars running lean, there very white in colour?

problem with the car is bad hesitation, poor power, very lumpy acceleration.notice it more under load.yet it starts fine and idles fine.

am I right in thinking its a clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump maybe? any ideas ?

Have you scanned it for any fault codes?

Fuel filter could give those symptoms, also the MAP sensor on the end of the inlet manifold gets gummed with oil deposits and can cause poor running under load, remove it 2 torx screws and spray it with carb cleaner

Yes no faults on vagcom, did clean the map sensor after doing the plugs,i will change the fuel filter for a try.

the more I think about it though the more suspicious I am of the exhaust.

I replaced the mid section the other day,but the backbox is new fitted by the previous owner,it doesn't look right seems very slim for the engine size, wonder if its of a 1tr or something

and the exhaust tone is awfull and it rattles a lot, restricted exhaust maybe

I would'nt rule out the exhaust, but a collapsed/restriced system would tend to show up as a problem at idle, even making the starting difficult as at the lower rpm the pressure is less

Cheers Nigel

I've replaced the fuel filter and no change,it's a service part anyway so was worth doing.

The exhaust mid section was replaced on Friday and it's already blowing at both joints so I'm thinking the cheap backbox fitted is wrong for the car or blocked in some way.

After a drive the exhaust gets really noisy so I think it's restricting the flow and causing the system to get very hot hence the white plugs?

Did have a metro with this problem years ago but didn't know it was the exhaust until the head gasket had blown
