i read a thread on here a while ago that was simialr to the one in the faq which is for the earlier cars, which said about removing the temp sender when its hot etc but the lower down the page it detailed how to set the ecu to a certain value with vcds and then use a timing light to set the dizzy.

i have been searching the forum and google for a good few hours now and i cannot find any info on it, even ross tech wiki gets confused with my search.

can anyone please explain how its done?

sorry just realised that its aex.

anyway its 6+/-1 at 500rpm.

the 500 rpm part can be a problem. how i overcame this was by unplugging the electronics from the throttle body which made the engine speed drop to very close to 500.

As an asside the condition of your timing belt will dictate ignition timing. i would bother changing things if you need to do a belt soon unless you have a problem.

jimbo - the engine is an AEX (replaced seized APQ) and its a late 1999 car.

nige - thanks for theat, thats exactly what i wanted :).

i think these are instructions for the handheld vag com, so where i think i go into 01 engine then basic settings, but then under group 001 the 8 digit number doesnt show? the temp guage is in the middle and there are no fault codes, do i have to make it hotter?

the belt is just over a week old so shouldnt be a problem. i had a starting issue and changed the distributor for a new one, but i hasnt be so good on fuel lately so i guess it isnt set right.

- wouldnt unplugging the t/b set off an error code? no doubting what your saying, but in that guide above it says it raises the idle speed, should it ot lower it the?

Hi mate i use sun modis not vagcom so not sure what you'd do there. however i will add as an asside if temperature data is available of your scanner make sure the temperature exceeds 90 centigrade. this is a common fault on polos where the engine hot will only produce between 72 and 75 even though the guage is in the middle (faulty temp sender). if you cant set basic settings in vagcomm try upplugging throttle. its a crappy style but it worked for me during the week on a customers polo

hmm, i think i will give that a go first then check it with vagcom basic settings but i think even if its in the ball park it will be a lot better then it is now :)
