Polo 6n2 Rear Bumper Removal / Towbar Installation

I bought a Witter Towbar with single electrics from ebay brand new as i wanted a bike rack so thought i'd take a few pictures whilst doing it as i couldnt find any info.

Bike rack was an unbranded foreign type for £70, overall impressed. If your interested which i bought search ebay for: Towbar Mounted 2 Cycle Tiltable Bike Rack Carrier With Lighting Board

A few downsides is that there is only a big bolt that you tighten to prevent it from rotating on the tow ball, but i drove 200 miles no problem going around country lanes. The other is that the bikes can catch each other in certain places but a bit of foam and its sorted.

Anyway, bumper removal. Very simple. Dont worry about it.

Its held on by a few screws and bolts. Heres what i did.

Remove the torx screws on the inner wheel arch, the haynes manual says you only need to remove 3 which you can see in the picture but I'm no 100% sure.

There was also one hidden going upwards behind the wheel arch itself, again not sure what this was for.

I would start by removing the 3 as in the bottom picture and see if it comes off.

You will probly struggle like me if you dont take the wheel off, a spanner and a small torx and screwdriver bit worked ok.

Below is the other 2 bolts you need to remove, they are directly underneath the bumper, look underneath from the back and you will see them.

The bolts are annoyingly long so therefore had rusted so took a lot of persuading to get out. I used some penetrating oil and did it a turn then go back a bit etc. Be careful as the bracket itself bends easily, i held it with some pipe grips. Also seen on pic number 5

You then give the bumper a bit of a jolt directly backwards and it will slide off. You can see in pic number 3 the black guides that the bumper slides into. They look like ears and are at the top of the bumper on the edges, two on each side. In the centre is a black breadknife looking thing. These all slot into a... slot on the bumper, when refitting make sure that the tabs go into the slots slightly above, there are 5.

Remember to remove the wiring harness for the number plate lights.

Crashbar removal is simply 2 nuts on captive bolts each side.

Towbar installation;

Pop the grommets out from the chassis rail they will be covered in underseal. 2 on each side.

Remove the underseal from around it to allow the washer contact with metal, tightening on underseal is bad! Put the bolts in, torque, reunderseal. Easy

Route the cable through the boot grommet ( you will have to remove parcel shelf mounts 2 bolt on left (boot light), 1 on right, pull off the bottom half of the boot seal, and pop the black mid section off )

Leave plenty of cable out, you can pull it back in later.

Dont attach any more of the towbar yet as you might not get the bumper on.

Wiring

I think both sides route along the left hand side panel but i just wired it in from the back of the lights. And extended a buzzer wire.

I couldnt find a diagram and cant remember now to make on but this is what i remember;

There are 5 wires on each light so not too hard to work out, 1 ground (brown), brake light, side light, indicator, Fog (right) Reverse (Left)

You can check with an assistant the order, by eliminating the rest, you can find out which is the indicator.

The buzzer i put on the left, when its under the trim carpet its just loud enough.

I used the scotchloks provided, i did buy some more from a Road and Rally but every one i used didnt work as the wires were a slightly different size so avoid. Buy quality, i ended up soldering a few.
