Apologies in advance for what is probably a simple question for most of you ... but!

I bought a 2002 (9N) 1.4 Polo for my son as his first car. The auxillary belt makes a horrendous noise at idle, not so much a screech but just an ongoing howl. Gets worse at high revs, but is not slipping and the belt itself looks in ok condition. I decided to replace it anyway to see if that sorts the noise. A quick spray of WD40 on the existing belt shuts it up for, oh, perhaps 20 secs!! Hoping a replacement will sort the issue.

The new belt was delivered today, and I set out to fit it. Now I've done a fair bit of work on cars in my time, but I can't for the life of me work out how to get the belt tensioner on this car to release so that I can replace the belt. If I pull on the belt I can see the tensioner move as it turns on the mounting, but how do you get it to lock so I can replace the belt??

Any help appreciated, I've just about lost the plot on this ... and googling reveals much information on Golfs, Audis, Passats ... but nothing on this Polo.

Thanks for that, but the doc does not appear to bear any resemblance to the engine in my son's car. There is no 16mm bolt on his tensioner. It has a black plastic cover on it that when removed reveals a Torx (T40 I think) bolt. I've tried popping a torx driver on it and turning it both ways, but the tensioner will not budge. I did notice a 16mm bolt underneath the tensioner that appears to hold the whole assembly in place, but loosening that just seems to loosen the whole assembly and does not help.

Any more ideas?

Thanks for the doc, that indeed looks more like it!! Anyone know what size/type bit fits the little hole in the tensioner assembly?

Torx? Hex?

I can get my finger to it, but as for seeing it ... no chance!
