Can we get a difinitive answer on foglight looms for 6n's?

Featured Replies

the rumour mill reports that 6n's come pre-fitted with a foglight loom, even if they are not fitted, but then again I hear that they dont and it has to be retro fit.

Is their a definitive answer here?

is it included only on certain models? only on certain years? not at all?

anyone here know?

I had a look at my valver today and couldn't find any connectors, but don't know if they are tucked away somewhere?

As far as I know the 6N1 didn't come with the fog light loom as standard, the 6N2 does though. The wiring is there from the fusebox to the 19 pin disconnect for the headlights by the battery

I haven't come across one either to have them fitted, anyone wanting to do the mod has always need the loom and the fogs themselves. I think you may also need a new fog switch too, but Nige could confirm that.

My 96 definitely didn't have the loom & I've had a look under my neighbours T plate and there isn't any connectors tied up either, yet the parts list shows the headlight loom with the fog light connectors for all 6n years and doesn't list a separate part number for a "Fog light" loom ???

You will need a new switch and as yours is a later model I think the wire should already be in the connector Pin 13 White/Yellow wire

As. Nige says above, the 6n defiantly doesn't have the foglight wiring from the factory UNLESS it has (or had) the lights fitted.

The loom itself is a very simple one and can be made in a few minutes if you have the connectors and wiring.

Switch wise you WILL need another one which has the first stage pull out for the front foglight. The second being the rear foglight.

Same era Ibiza have the same switches and front fogs where more popular on them. Only difference is that it will light up red. Either get creative with LEDs, or just change all the gauges and switches over.

Beware of buying the switches from German eBay, very cheape BUT they are mirror image so are completely the wrong shape.

On earlier 6n, there is no wire from pin 13 on the switch and a certain pin behind the fuse box, but ALL early 6n had the wiring between fuse box and 19 pin front panel connector.

The pins you would need for the fog light loom at the front of the car are 2 male junior timer pins and 4 female junior timer pins. About 2.5 metres of yellow wire and 2.5 metres of brown wire. You will need the plastic connector body for them, luckily these are the same as the side repeaters and rear number plate lights.

For the wire inside the car on earlier cars you will need 1 female junior timer connector and another which is larger. I get mine from old looms as I haven't bothered to investigate and find the bigger one new. The wire is around 14" long.

Sorry for the delay.

So here we go.
Thats how it is or would be from factory with original Lightswitch for foglights.

Thats the lightswitch:
fogs01.JPG
Pull out the switch, the front foglights are on, when you pull one step further, the front fogligfhts stay on + the rear foglights are on.

On this Lightswitch with front foglight-option, you have the contact 13 on the back. So you with your normal switch shouldn't have that wide contact 13, right?
fogs02.JPG

On the connector you also shouldn't have the pin 13, is there an contact with a wire in no 13? I don't think so.
And here you have to start in case making everything as original as possible.
fogs03.JPG
fogs04.JPG
So from that connector place 13 you need a wire in 1,5 square mm diameter down along the original wireloom to the back of the centralelectricbox.
There you'll find a couple of different connectors, from the insidewireloom, the dashboardwireloom, the enginewireloom, the steeringcolumn wireloom and so on.... the wire from the lightswitch for the front foglights ends in the blue connector "P" Pin No. 1
fogs05.JPG
fogs06.JPG
fogs07.JPG

So i guess that wire in missing in your case.
Now from here the current flows inside the electricbox and comes out throught the orange connector "A2" Pin No. 8
fogs08.JPG
fogs09.JPG
which belongs already to the wireloom whoch leads to the enginebay.
The other end of this wire ends in the 19pin frontendcentralconnector on Pin No. 5
fogs10.JPG
fogs11.JPG
So check out that connector in the front in the enginebay. You should have that pin inside the connector, right?
Thats, as far as i know, always, equal if frontfogs were ordered or not. I guess it has to do with producing the different wirelooms.
There were wirelooms for the different engines, so with and without mpi/spi and than with or without Aircondition. And for only one damned wire they didn't wanted to produce complete new wirelooms. But thats just what i assume.
So from the centralelectricbox till this 19pin connector it is already done.

In the frontentwireloom, which is btw just for the complete frontillumination, there are no wires for plus and minus for the foglights.
So that Pin No. 5 on the other side shall be empty in your case, right?
fogs12.JPG
fogs13.JPG

So what you need to do is clear now?
Get a better lightswitch, the wire from the lightswitch to the centralelectricbox and from that frontendconnector pin5 to your both lights and from there to an minus-point down in the enginebay or take minus from the brown wire fron the headlights.
To do that as original as possible according to the current flow diagrams would go to far now i guess.

By the way, you can have my lightswitch, and i would provide you a wire with the right pins for the lightswitch to the electricbox and a wire with the right pin for the frontendconnector to your foglights...... shipping is 14,90Euro to norway. PayPal me 20Euros and it is all yours. It is just an offer.

I hope that all above here is clear now. ???

cheers

Thats with the old centralelectricbox (as golf mk3), if you have the newer centralelectricbox, i can tell you which wires to have to look for on that.

cheers
