at the mo I'm running my car with the stock gt ignition and 40's

the mh ignition with the saucer on the side...........does this setup need sumwhere 2 get a vacuum from i.e does the inlet manifold need a hole in it 2 plug the vacuum tube from the manifold 2 the dizzy?? cus i want 2 put the mh vacuum advance ignition on but as i have a manifold for 40's i have no where 2 get a vacuum from

How have you got the GT dizzy to advance its timing? if you haven't got any ignition advance method then your car wont run very well atall

The MH dizzy has mechanical advance which is the one everyone with carbs goes for because you dont need to mess around with mapable ignition

You can either leave the vacuum advance unplugged or if you like take a vacuum from the inlet manifold

I would just leave it unplugged as its not needed

well on the gt dizzy u can undo the 2 10mm bolts holding it and u can twist the dizzy round 2 advance or retard it is that not good enuff??............

i cant run n e mor vacuum hoses of my inlet manifold cus id have 2 take it off agen 2 drill the holes......got the servo runnin of it and thats it

surely if u leave the vacuum tube of a mh dizzy that would defeat the object??

Edited by mrgt

that could be part of running prob servo connected to one cylinder blank it off ant try it. you need dizzy and coil+ wiring off 1989 polo coupe S (plus a mod to dizzy to get rid of vacume advance and have 24 deg of bob weight advance) will give you loads more power

No, engines HAVE to advance the igntion timing itself as the revs increase

A GT dizzy doesnt have these ignition advance features without its ecu controlling it

So you NEED to get a dizzy from a 1985-1990 mk2 polo, in order to make your car run

The feed for the vacuum advance must be taken from the carb, and it must be above the throttle butterfly, i.e. not constant, as it would be if it were taken from, say, the servo pipe or below the throttle butterfly.

you dont run vacuum advance on twin 40's as the vacuum will pulse depending on which stroke the engine is on, and that will cause the ingntion to vary over a few degrees.

the vacuum advance is just to give you better ecconomy at very small throttle openings as it takes longer for the fuel mixture to burn.

if you're using a mk2 polo distributor, you will have the centrifugal advance still which will increase the advance as the revs rise.

I know of someone who used to run bike carbs on a GT engine but used the standard GT electronics and distributor, but just disconnected the GT injectors and it ran ok

Ah, of course, twin carbs. When my brother had SU's fitted to his coupe some years back, he just joined both venturi vac feeds together, balancing both sides for the advance unit.

the ecu on my engine is STILL running the dizzy it has not been disconnected 4 this purpose its all working as it would be on a standard gt lump with injection so with that cleared up ther shouldnt b n e mor problem's? it should all work ok?

Edited by mrgt

not sure if that would work ok :S

surely without the injectors the ecu doesn't know when to..........dunno what i'm trying to get at here but that doesn't sound right to me,

if i was running twin 40's i would have taken the ecu out completely.

n e 1 confirm this 4 definate?? should my gt dizzy that still has the ecu running work for running a set of 40's?

It will be running in limp home mode all the time, which isn't exactly a map geared for performance. If you don't want to run a mk2 dizzy you could get a GK engine ECU as this uses a dizzy like that of a GT. You just need to get hold of wiring loom. But again the GK engine measures vacuum at the ECU (like a G40 in some ways) so really you have the same problem.

A mk2 dizzy is your best bet. The wiring is very simple. It will cost you less than the money you would make from selling the GT ecu and the GT wiring loom, and it would almost certainly offer better performance.

I'd have to agree with these two definatley - get a coupe s loom, and dizzy - problem solved then eh!!!

ok so a mk2 dizzy set up is the way 4ward.............thanks 4 all the help if i dont run the mk2 dizzy with the vacuum will that not affect it at all?? doesnt it need that vacuum 2 advance wen revving??

its has a centrifugal advance for when you rev. should be fine without the vacuum advance connected.

this is the dizzy you need.

i got one from a local scrappy for £10.

dizzyneed.jpg

dizzy will need internals modifing to get 24deg of bob weight advance then static timing of 10deg will give you 34deg full advance

nice work people and thanks 4 the pic. had sum good advice from people and thats y i enjoy this site due 2 people always willing 2 help e.t.c

ok so i got the dizzy/coil/ignition booster and wiring of a carb'd mk2 golf got the dizzy on but stuck on wer 2 put the wires from the golf coil into my polo wiring. n e 1 no? and what the terminals on the golf coil are all 4 can n e 1 do a wiring diagram??

arent they all colour matched?

  • Author

no the 3 wires that go 2 the dizzy are different colours 2 the loom on the golf

  • Author

and plus ther are 3 terminals on the golf coil that that need wires going 2 them i dont no what the terminals are and wer 2 get the feed from on my gt

you would be better off with polo coupe s wiring as it is a straight swap to engine just light plugs to swap

  • Author

unfortunatly 4 me i cant find a coupe s in a scrap yard all i could find is a 1.3 golf

try another scrappy or put a wanted in parts on here !!!!!!!!
