You could probably still use these, but those indentations will be targets prone for inducing det hotspots!

Got some goodies off ad? :ninja:

Would it be possible to maybe take . something of a mm off the inner face of the pistons? Or is this not possible? Its the only way i can think if fixing it. But i know feck all about that sort of thing tbh lol.

Then you'd be lowering the compression ratio.

I could skim them for you if you want? to make sure there's no rough bits on the sides of them that would eat the bores. On the house ofcourse ;) ,

Just take them out and post or something, I think you would get away with a few thou off them.

  • Author

Ahh yes, of course.

I may have to take you up on that offer maximus.

What i really need, is for Dom to buy his low comp pistons to enable running boost, then i can have his off him

If skimming the pistons lowers the comp ration, then wouldn't having the head skimmed do the same? Thats something else i need to sort, few light scratched in the head which need to be vanished.

Also, if i take the pistons out will i need to replace all the bearings n shit from down below?

I'm getting excited and scared haha, most I've taken an engine down to is as it stands now, anything more is new to me :|

Oh, and detonation hotspots? Anyone explain to me further?

Skim the pistons, turbo the bastard

Well its good to learn, and no you wouldn't NEED to replace anything i don't think. But it may be a good idea?

And no , skimming head like the AFH one will increase the compression ratio because the combustion chambers reduce in CC, meaning that there's a smaller area for the gas to be compressed.

Skimming pistons is doing the opposite because your effectively making more room for the gas to be compressed meaning that the C/R will be slightly smaller.

What I would do if I was you, would be to send me the head and pistons and ill skim both, the amount taken off both should cancel any changes to the C/R out.

The pistons i can do for free but the head skimming (which i would advise) will cost you ;)

Mates rates of course.

M

Take a few thou off the pistons, then take even more off the block.... :D

High compression ftw!

This sounds like a plan tbh Max, i shall be in touch ;)

And thats what i was thinking, i just worded it wrongly. That it would even it out if both were skimmed.

Need to invest in a stand before i start tatting though.

Do it, might aswell go the whole hog!

What you doing with the RA's, you selling them or keeping as winters?

  • Author

Winters or trackdays.

Ideally i want some compomotives to run some semi slicks on though.

Forget running boost haha. Too many problems to overcome.

Skimming the pistons to run boost wouldn't be ideal

Sound, let us know.

You thinking about increasing the C/R? Or just wanting the bare minimum off the head?

  • Author

Minimum i guess.

How would increasing it help?

is this the lump that saf blew at pod ? or a different one ? yer just get the piston and head skimmed then jobs a gooden

and for whats its worth u may as well get all new bearings

looking goodddddddd

Yep, think it is. Could be wrong though.

Wheres a good place for decent bearings n rings? I hear GSF ones are shyt?

piston indents, I wouldn't be too worried about. It's the marks on the exhaust ports which I'd be wary of.

VW or an engine builder. GSF won't do shell shells and rings. Get ready to be throughly bent over for a 100 quid odd at cheapest though.... I know VW will charge £250+ vat for just a set of rings but dont go there

the lump suffered an idler pulley failure, (stud snapped) so wasnt a full cambelt failure, but was pretty bad!

glad your pleased mush, ads oily car man, fully dread!

  • 2 weeks later...

toby i've got similar marks on my pistons, looks like this was done many moons ago and this engine ran fine until an urelated failure. could you not just wet and dry the sharp edges off them?

Guess so, may aswell get them skimmed though tbh.

I think its the best option, especially as max is such a don and offered to do it for nout.

Taking it all apart tomorrow, left it over night for all the oil to drain out. You should see the colour of the oil, looks almost like chocolate milksake

Think it will do it some good if i take it all apart and clean it haha.

Hopefully have some pictures of progress tomorrow :)

I've just read all of this and then realised its 39 pages long! work is obviously busy today :/ i like it dude, cant wait to see what kind of power youll get out of the engine :)

Great, now me an the mad scientist are gonna have to rip apart the block an replace the piston rings you fried

DSC00706-2.jpg

Was rather exciting and interesting, as I've never gone as far as this with taking things apart before

Bloody filthy inside, all the oil is brown/grey.

Give all the pistons a clean tomorrow and get it all packaged up to send to Maximus. Need to get a perm marker to number the pistons also.

Great timing also, Its just started raining lol

Cheers Salty. I'm having to postpone cams for the time being. So it will just be standard on carbs. But it means I'll have it on the road sooner and I'll have more money to blast on petrol haha.

I reckon its still gunna be pretty savage though even without cams.

Will wait and get the real McCoy from Schrick, with verniers :)

Forty pages, fuck me

Edit again, Forgot to say thanx to Brettney for helping me 'rip apart the block'. Safe!

Edited by B-shaw

are you going to deck the block?

  • Author

I didn't plan to, no...

Should i? lol
