I tried with the socket saf. Just kept slipping off, couldn't put any force behind it. Thats why i used the screwdriver after all else failed.

And lol Alex... probably not

Saf, what relay roller thing is on this atm? It has a threaded bar in, but i guess its not the afh one? If it is, I'm lost completely by the problem of fitting the afh one

BTW, I'm not getting new rings and bearings if i can help it. Was just curious at the prices.

What you saying about this mount then mate, You cant just give it me and expect me to know exactly what you want/need lol

The head i can take care of obviously

M

got a pic of the relay roller? is it the same(ish) size as the cam pulley? if so its an afh one, if its skinnier its a mk5 polo one.

should be a modified AFH one and if it is then DOH, i was meant to whip it off!

Get the idea? lol.

I'll have to get some sort of measurements for the holes at the bottom.

And if you could drill a hole for all 3 bolts up top too? That'd be sick.

Pictures thanks to Briscoe

haha, I'll take a pic bro.

I'll give it u back if you need it? You still game to get a new one modded for me? Or I'll keep this one and send you a brand spanker, or just the money for one. Or something

Safe!

Hmm, after getting the toothbrush and WD40 out and giving the pistons some close insection. Piston number two is cracked where the exhaust valve has twatted it.

The pistons from this and the AFH are the same arent they? Just the crank etc thats different, or am i wrong?

May aswell get 4 pistons from an AFH and swap them if they are the same.

Saf, you still got that bottom end? and is it built (piston n rods more importantly)

still got it and still built, surprsingly wasnt nicked by pikeys yesterday!

pistons took a tickle too lad when it died on the pod

its your mate for free if you come collect

Any pictures of the valve contact?

Might need to have it tbf.

Aye int perils thread lad

Eurgh... Dilemma lol

Dont want to put AFH pistons in as it sends the compression ratio too high

I cant see me finding any pistons for the AVY and i doubt I'll find another AVY bottom end any time soon.

I've been offered a straight swap for a sound AFH bottom end. But i want 1.6 goodness lol.

AFH will be more simple and less illegal  But I'm loosing out on power and torque.

150bhp is my mission.. doubt id get that out of the 1.4 without spending silly money. Although when i look at it, does a MK3 polo really need 150bhp to be fun? Overkill?

Ask that question to G40 owners, see what they say

I stalk your progress on Facebook. :ninja:

haha, damn stalker!!!

Thing is, I'm not all that bothered about top end. I think a 1.4 on carbs, cammed with exhaust will go plenty fast enough.

Its the acceleration I'm after. Would the 1.6 really aid in this?

And that if 100bhp spins the wheels easily enough then what would 150bhp be like? haha.

I reckon with the spec I'm going for should get me between 130-140 anyway. Thats getting close to what I'd be getting out of the 1.6

Hmm, i dunno

I'll wait till i get paid again in a fortnight and see what comes up between then. I've possibly found some pistons on uk-polo's but not yet had a reply off the dude.

One dude said he had a ARC, was like coool.. till he wanted £300 for it.

Nothing going on here, local forums, edition, clublupo. Not sure on any other good places to look.

Just seanvw which could save this really :ninja: haha.

think i no a guy who may have some avy pistons, ill find out if he still has them

What about getting AFH pistons and skimming them slightly? That will give you the perfect C/R , and even more potential power!

Toby just swap for the afh, get the fucker in the car and enjoy it. With the plans you've got this thing is gonna shift anyway

Take the money you were going to spend fixing this and put it some where safe, swap for the afh then.when a 1.6 bottom end comes up for sale you've got the money there to buy it and a working afh to fit it to,.you could then even make money back selling on te in needed afh bottom end. Mate your fucking crazy if you don't take the offer

Those pictures look familiar toby, you know you have to pay me copyright to post those biatch...

I'll see if i can get pistons and go from there.

I've found another potential AFH (full engine) that i might go and get too, its dirt cheap :ninja:

I'll pick saf's up too whilst I'm at it

Abusing hire cars with engines in the back. all good fun

AVY crank and rods with afh pistons (skimmed) into an AFH block is also a possibility (i think)

Lots of ways i could get a 1.6 really. Whichever comes up 1st i guess.

Not to knock guys advice, but whilst your doing all this, you might aswell take it as far as you can in my eyes.

Get some AFH pistons skimmed to a desired C/R

Think I've came to the decision to just do the swap for the AFH.

Several reasons

* No fannying around with that relay roller thing

* No cutting and welding of the sump, i can just use a MK3 sump and clear the subframe without any issues

* Less of an issue with insurance and tax.

* Still more than enough bhp. And if i get bored it wouldn't take much to simply swap to a 1.6 block later down the line. This way i haven't got all the power possible at once. so when i get bored theres something relatively easy and cheap to improve it further.

Decided not to let this distraction put me off though, got cracking on it again today

Stripped a few things that i want to re-paint with silver hammerite - Rad cover, bar thing the rad sits on and the ARB

Took the TCA's off ready to remove the rubber bushes to be replaced with polly items

Took the front brakes off to swap to VW1 carriers (to clear the new wheels) and to swap the drivers side solid line

Also took the master cylinder off ready for the new one. Currently in the process of removing the servo as i think theres an issue with that. Its the only thing i can put my dodgy brakes down to.

Pig to unbolt the servo when the cars in the garage as i cant open the door fully for access to the foot-well.

Sounds good mate. Fannying around with 1.6 probably isn't worth the bother for those few extra horses.

If you want something really fast just build a G-turbo after this?

Overkill?

No.

I think I'll move onto smaller and better things once I've got this in. Just a few finishing touches (coilovers and a cage) and i think i will actually be able to say its 'finished'

I still want a mini really quite badly, and it has to have boost.

This will become the daily and a mini a project. Next year i hope to put this plan into action lol.

Overkill?

No.

 i know. But its probably overkill for what i want out of it.

I think 130-140 is plenty enough really? More than a standard G, just executed differently.

Also... dicking over some chav then saying 'yeh, its a 1.4' is far better than saying a 1.6 haha. Its more surprising from a smaller engine.

I wont be cheating tax either. As to fuck am i going through the hassle of informing the DVLA. They have made it far too difficult. they are there own worst enemy. I was all for making it legal, I'm not the kind to do things like that wrong. But when there being as stupid as they are and theres a risk of not getting the logbook back if there not happy with something. Its just stupid.

More people would do it right if it wasn't as pointlessly difficult as it is now.

I know an engine that'll slot straight in, and won't require a letter to the Doovla... A nice 1.3. eusa_whistle.gif

43 pages and its still in bits
