read all 44 pages and you are a brave man mate, but it has shown that if a chap like yourself who is new to engines can do it, then so can i.

i just don't want to take me car off the road.

keep up the good work!

Cheers dude :)

you could do it a lot quicker than i have, if you have all the bits then you could do it in a weekend, then fine tuning during the week

A silver update

Pikey painting solutions in full swing

Some bits will get a 2nd coat tomorrow if i think they need it. The blue hammerite had to go as it looked cheap, silver looks far tidier and more professional i think.

Couldnt have chose a better day, was gong to do it yesterday but glad i chose to be a lazy fuck instead. As its been rather hot again today, unlike yesterday.

YESSS. but whens it gonna be running?

My target date is the weekend of 'the big fat tour' to be all on the road and legal and 100% working

So think thats like early July time. Few months off yet :(

Needs to be done for poloshow at the latest, or ill cry if i have to go a 2nd year without a car :crybaby:

Cams next month :D :D I could do it quicker if i forget about the cams but naaahhhh, i wont be happy if i dont do the cams lol. Higgos MK1 will beat me, and we cant be having that

Next month should see the engine built up and in. hopefully exhaust too.

Sounds good mate. What cams you gonna go for? Bothering with springs/followers/vernier pulleys too?

I'm hoping to have my done by poloshow too :-)

  • Author

Nahh, only getting the original ones re-ground. So what I'm doing is, is getting whatever i can out of them before id need springs and pulleys etc. Costs faar too much otherwise.

For the cost of proper cams with all the right gear in this, i could be going turbo G lol.

Dunno if ill have done all of the 1K of running in for poloshow, but ill hopefully be there in this at the least. So no giving it death :(

I want pics of urs still, u stealthy fuck. I managed to get a pic of robs hahaha. i did lol :ninja:

I see, are you confident the standard followers will support that?

I haven't even got any pictures of it myself yet, I've got some new wheels for it and shit at home in Norwich, and some more gadgets to come for my standalone setup. Just all needs to be put together.

Not even I've seen Rob's yet, and i bloody live with the guy! hahah

Might get round to skimming your head tomorrow, if not it will be next week hopefully.

I Like the paint, ill be doing all mine the same colour to match my wheels after iv got it on the road.

Need the dimensions for the holes on the plate too.

'dubownerbilco' has had the cams re-done by piper and hasn't had to have anything else changed. So i assume all will be fine. Still need to speak to a few cam companys and see what they all say.

gunna try piper, kent and newman.

Yes maximus. I do need to get those dimensions. I always forget though

If you wanna make it up on the dimensions uve already got then go for it. i can get them other 2 holes drilled out down here. I can actually get them exact then. But ill try n figure it out somehow.

What you thinkin to that head max, if you have to skim so much off is it going to cause issues? Theres no haynes for the 16v so cant even get any info from there on limits etc. Dunno where to look really :?

Reckon its worth changing the oil seals too? As its seems to have been cooked, could that have done any damage to them? How do you even know if they are ok or not without actually running the head?

more gassing and no major progress. Your as bad as jake and his g40

  • Author

Not a great deal i can do atm though

Engine, is fucked, the AFH I'm having is at Doms

Head is with max

Carbs are in the post

Inlet is with saf

Polybushes I'm still waiting for

Nearly ran out of money again from this months pay

slowly stripping the paint from the cats, but its boring and messy so i often cba with it.

I'd say I'm progressing quicker than Jake, but that really doesn't take much :ninja: aha

Dont loose heart toby, its worth all the hassle and then some :-D

I'm surprised i haven't actually gone through the 'eurrgghhh, cannot be fucked with this, I'm selling' stage.

I'm far from loosing heart atm, i miss it so bad.

Well the problem is, is that because it looks like it has had a big cambelt failure and all pistons have been kissed, there is a posibility that the valve guides, (the bronze "tubes" that valves slide up and down in), could have cracked and thats not good. Thinking about it theres only one way you could check and iv got all the tools to do so.

Ill tell you what, ill take the valves out for you (if i can find a compressor with a big enough throw) and check the guides, if they look ok then i will go ahead with skimming it.

I would definetly put new valve guide seals in, these are pennys from GSF or the like. Valve guides on the other hand are a specialist job as they require the head being heat treated to loosen the guides, then a press to push them out with minimal damge to the head, then the holes reaming out, then oversized guides been put back in (usually), would probably be cheaper to get a decent head, or you could fork out some more money and get it done properly.

Ill be doing it next week mate. Let me know by PM what you think.

This wasn't the head that had the cambelt failure. This is a new one saf bought after as the other one was fucked iirc.

So, other than it obv over heating it should be sound.

I take it the valves have to come out to do the seals?

yeah head was bought from a stripped engine off matt-polo-6n, i was told the engine was running at the point of splitting, but its not the head that had the cambelt failure, that head is with arun, as he was using it to check all the manifolds he was making!

head should be fine, but i didnt inspect it in great detail, just bought it and had it stored in my room.

Ah thats good news then, valves shouldnt need to come out i dont think to do the stem seals, there under the tappets.

If I send you some seals reckon you could yam then on for me? Or maybe easier send u the money for them if u dont mind getting some? Not bothered either way like :)

My Powerflex inner TCA bushes arrived today :D Sexy colour they are

Need 2nd of May to hurry, and for G-laderseite to be super swift with posting after then.

looks the bollocks mate not seen an update on this for a bit whats next up???

mate,

just read through your thread. looks like it will be good when its done :)

i like how it looked in this pic:

DSC00646.jpg

how much is it lowered and what size tyres you running? i got 185/60r13 on my RAs at the min and considering getting something a little lower profile on the front - maybe 175/60r13.

did you find the GT much of an improvement over the AAV? (it was a 1.3 before wasnt it?) cant decide which way to go with mine...

keep up the good work mate

Done a little bit on this today :)

Finally ordered the outer TCA bushes from G-laderseite, so should hopefully have them soon

Put the brakes back together, just a new servo and master cylinder to go on and i can get them bled.

Been as i never took a pic of the setup when i fitted it all last year, i took one today

DSC00759-1.jpg

Just now they have VW1's instead of the VW11's so the wheels clear them. (carriers i meant)

Radiator is back in and the subframe is half way there

What a fucking bastard the subframe is being to fit though  Getting it to go onto the TCA mounts has been a nightmare. Was bent a little in the 1st place so had to bend it back out, but its still being a nice person. Its half on now, just requires a lot of abuse from the mallet and it should be sweet. Ok, I've now found the reason for this, I'm a noob. There are 2 dimples on the back of the tca mounts (why do VW do this? most pointless things ever) that i need to grind down. I blame working in a tight garage and not once looking at the rear of the mounts lol

But I've had to stop as its making a lot of noise, and the last thing i need is trouble with the bellends in the flats and the council trying to kick me out of the garage again.

I'll get a pic once the subframe is in and all is back together.

Cheers Mabbo :)

Its down on a 80/60 kit with lowering topcaps.

Tyres are 175/60

GT was indeed an improvement. pulled so much more. But as i didn't ever run it with a GT box i never got to feel what a true GT was like. So it would be better than what i experienced. And i loved it.

GT is a good choice if all you want to do is leave it standard. But as i wanted to cam and go carbs etc it seemed kinda pointless when for the same you can get a lot more from an AFH. Which is is around what a modded GT can get, straight away. Then mods on top make it more than you could ever get out of a N/A GT.

yeah but don't forget the gay factor of the afh Toby, its one of the biggest reasons why people choose the gt engine over it.
