mk1 polo 1981 W reg 895cc

Featured Replies

Unfortunately, the time has come to sell my beloved mk1 polo.

I am starting a new job soon which will involve a lot of travelling, and I don’t want to rack up loads of miles on this old classic. I’ve bought something new and sensible, and I simply haven’t got the space or money to keep 2 cars, so the polo has to go 

I have owned the car for just over a year. It previously belonged to a PVW staff members’ girlfriend. It has honestly been the most reliable car I have ever owned, and has never let me down once. I have done around 3000 miles in it this year, including long drives to Edition38 (where it was shown, some of you might recognise it), GTI International, Ace Café, regular visits to Bluewater and Brands Hatch meets, and various other shows and meets, without ever missing a beat. When I took the car to The Phirm to have the coilovers fitted, I got stuck on the M25 for over 6 hours due to a serious accident which closed to road completely. Even sitting in baking hot conditions for that length of time, the car behaved impeccably and never caused any problems.

Specification:

1981 W reg mk1 Polo

Original 895cc engine and 4 speed gearbox

37,000 miles

Inari Silver (light metallic green)

Massive history file including loads of old MOTs, receipts, original bill of sale etc.

Modifications (all reversible):

GAZ custom made fully adjustable (height/damping) coilovers, built on mk3 polo front struts.

Cobra Monaco buckets trimmed in Burgundy/Tan leatherette, mounted on Cobra subframes.

MOMO/D&W Team 300mm black leather steering wheel with MOMO boss.

Raceland Alloy rollcage (for mk1 Golf, Modified to fit mk1 polo).

Pirelli P-Slot alloys fitted with super-rare Italian spec Pirelli alloy centre caps, fully mirror polished by Dav at Pureklas.

175/50/14 Pirelli P6000 tyres.

Black Diamond grooved discs (not fitted, still in box).

Mk1 Golf small chin spoiler modified to fit (not fitted).

Arches rolled by ArchEnemy.

All original parts (front and rear seats, steels and tyres, steering wheel etc) will be supplied with the car.

Good points:

Superb condition for a 27 year old car, very straight and solid.

The car was treated to a full original colour respray around 20 months ago by the previous owner.

Extremely low genuine mileage.

Lots of new parts, including battery, plugs, leads, coil, rotor arm, distributor cap, filters, wheel bearings etc.

Never driven in the rain.

The car is still on the original square-edged dealer number plates.

Treated like a baby – never thrashed or even remotely driven hard, what’s the point? You don’t need to drive fast in a car as cool as this 

Maintained regardless of costs, no expense spared on anything.

MOT until September 2008. A few months tax left.

Very cheap to run and insure – fully comp costs me £250 a year with HIC, all mods declared.

Bad points:

Driver’s side wing has a rust patch at the bottom, this could be easily plated if you are handy with a welder, or replacement panels are available from Hadrians Body Panels.

Chrome trim is missing from the grill.

Small crack in one of the tail lights (these appear on Ebay quite regularly for £10 to £15)

Rear arches need painting – the paint flaked when I had the arches rolled. The metal is fine, and I will give them a quick coat of anti-rust primer before the sale.

The rollcage is meant for a mk1 Golf – I have modified the tubes in several places in order to fit the smaller mk1 Polo shell. The cage is currently held together with silver tape, and not fixed in place. To make the cage a permanent fixture, you will need to bend 2 small sections of alloy pipe (supplied) in order to bridge the gap between the rear down-sections and the cross brace. Alternatively you could just ditch the cage.

The Cobra subframes put the seats in a rather high and upright position. I am used to this now, but you might want to modify the subframes so that the seats can sit lower in the car, and in a more relaxed position (original front and rear seats will be supplied with the car).

I absolutely love this car, it’s a real character. You all know how popular these are getting – look at the latest Golf+ magazine, mk1 derby on the cover and mk1 Polo/Audi 50 features inside. The car is a perfect solid base for a GT/G40/1.4 16v conversion, or simply as a cheap to run, reliable daily driver. I would do anything to keep it, but I simply don’t have the space or cash to run 2 cars.

I have been as honest and precise as possible in the description, in order to make the sale as simple as possible, and also to prevent any time wasting.

Quick total of costs so far:

Coilovers and struts - £670

Seats and subframes - £365

Steering wheel and boss - £150

Rollcage - £180

Wheels - £110

Centre caps - £160

Mirror polishing - £180

Tyres - £215

Car - £700

Brake discs - £40

Servicing, parts etc – approx. £550

I obviously do not expect to reclaim every penny that I have spent on the car, but please be aware that I will not be giving it away for a stupid price. I am located in Southend, Essex. Serious offers please.

£1700 ovno

what he is meaning to say is... you may want to edit the title of this advert, because it says 1891 instead of 1981... being the year the car was manufactured. :-D

would you consider selling the coilies seperately?

sorry dude, i really dont want to start ripping it apart. i dont have the original suspension to put back on. you can have the car in standard spec, with the coils fitted, for £1200 if your interested.

have you got any pictures of the arches. you mentioned some of the paint came off when you got the arches done.

i will get some up tomorrow, wont get the chance today. the metal is fine, been exposed for a few months so it has a very light coat of surface discolouration but thats it. ill sand it back and give it a few coats of anti rust primer before it goes.
