A house key is a 2D cutting path. The 3rd dimension is already there in the key type - so if its a Yale key,for example (other manufacturers are available etc). And the same can be said for a VW key - there are only two types,easy to see,so you only need the 2D cut of that type. I could probably copy a front door key from this topic,accurately enough to work with persuasion,with a Dremmel.

To be fair Mikey- you're no mere mortal, I'd expect a man of your calibre to forge a key from a raw nugget of iron, stick bike carbs on it, and break 15 gearboxes.

The two VW keys I have sat infront of me have different depth cut outs in them.

well surely if they could see how far off real size your key was with buyin or getin a real key of what ever car u have meausurin that and comparin it to the pics they coudl work out the differace and work out the rest?

Not to piss on peoples' parade...but did you know those displaying a full profile of your key blade can have their keys cut from just the photo!!!

You never know what kind of pikies are looking so I would blank/crop out your key blades.

OK people just a quick lesson on how it works using an example...

Right, to start with keys with the flat blade HUF HAA eg. 6n and later have a key code associated with the key profile.

This code is a 4 digit code which you will find on the Black key information tag that you have with your owners manual.

On this tag you will find one 4 digit number which is your key profile and indicates the physical cuts on the key. The other 4 digit number usually found under a scratch-off panel is your immobiliser/transponder code used to program your key in with the ECU immobiliser.

As the physical key code has only 4 digits and each digit is 0-9, there is a finite number of combinations, albeit a large number (10,000).

What the software does is look at the picture and infer from the visible points the most suitable of key profile that matches the photo.

The depth of the cut is standard across the flat blade keys and thus a key can easily be cut and a key code provided for future reference from a simple clear photo.

Mk3 keys aren't flat- and I'd still be surprised if you could do it to the accuracy necessary for the key to actually work.

Anyone got any internet links to places that actually do this?

I can't say for sure with mk3's but for my 6n I have had one done tried and tested works fine and cut is identical to my original. I had it done from a photo as I did not get a key info tag in my owners manual from the previous owner.

Cheers for the link- like I said though I doubt it can be done from just a photo with a Mk3 key, it still remains impossible to get any accurate depth measurement from a 2D image, whilst in a profile view

You may be right about my super-human abilities Yoof,but even i cant see how to modify a car key with a fuel dispensing device. And i thought an intelligent man like yourself could tell the difference between four and fifteen - if not,its little wonder you couldnt cut a key from a computer-graphed image of one,using a blank key of the same type. You'd probably just kick the front door in,like me.

There are a few Volkswagen key types,its easy to see which one is which just by looking at it. Mine is AH i think,which is the layered flat type. The other but less popular one for the MK2/F is HV. The latter has more pronounced ridges down the centre.

They're all the same length,uncut ones cost a tenner on ebay,so a grid print enables an accurate replication to be made from a photo via silhouette. Might as well put a stencil of your key next to your Fli sticker..

Not that steering locks are difficult to get around. It just cracks me up how people tell the world on here what expensive stuff they've put into their cars,then put their plates up,then put their key patterns up. Smooth.

but yea, on my keys for car i have a russian navy dogtag and some random one i stole from a jacket in TK MAXX thinking ' OMG THATS SO KEWL'. Mainly for weight, i hate having light things in my pockets and then not being sure if they're actually there or not.

I hate that, sometimes I only have the 2 keys in my pocket, House and Car.

Then i end up panicking and checking every pocket at ninja speeds.
