5th Gear Alignment Guide

All Polo-type 5-speed gearboxes,as fitted from the mid '80s MK2,all 6n's,MK3 Golf 1.4,all 6n2's.

If the starter motor is on the back of the engine instead of the front and its a 5-speed then its the right unit. Also the 6n 1.9 diesel, even though the starter is on the front.

Does not apply to some Lupos or post '02 Polos when they have a front mounted starter motor.

ALL Take note

I've had someone do this and complain that it crunches when he puts it into 5th.

This will be overtightening of the rose joint. Do not tighten it more than I've suggested. You need to tighten it with one hand whilst you feel for play with the other, until the play stops. But do not tighten further! It must not be sprung/resisting,you only wanna take the play out of it. If anything, leave it so you can just feel play, but not see it. There's literally a quarter turn on the fine line between it being right and too tight - if you over adjust it you'll get the crunching and it'll wear the selector fork.

what happens if you over do it as i think i over adjusted mine and i lost like 20mph top speed car wont go over 100mph with gt engine and box :puke::crybaby::?:-(

What happens if you overdo it, is what happened to me this morning, youll destroy 5th once and for all and have to drive the 200 miles home in 4th  . fuel consumption is going to suffer.

what has happened to fifth? And what was the issue last time? If it'd kicked out and you just adjusted it,you got more out of it so its not so bad. If you replaced the gears and have lost them again you didn't adjust them correctly. Cant see how this can write the box off though..

If you overtighten it you'll crunch regularly and wear it out rapidly - taking it back to kicking out with the same damage it had before. Remember, kicking out does the damage, and it wont kick out many times before it just wont bite at all. Just have to do it again, and this time dont overtighten it. You'll need to replace the fork too, you'll see its worn. The donor one should be fine. This happened because the fork was still pushing against the drive/engagement ring whilst driving in 5th,so it wore the handling tips of the fork.

You tighten it just until you take the looseness out of it,no further.

I think I've been pointed in the right direction by Mikey here,

My car popped out of 5th a few times on motorway then would not go into fifth (as if a 5th slot didnt exist)

Would i be right in thinking it is a case of replacing a the fifth ring and the fork, then adjusting the tension on the selector?

If so, do i buy a scrappy gear box and take it to bits for these parts?

Also do you guys have a guy/club member in Hull who is willing to watch over the shoulders of complete noobs to the greasy stuff to make sure we dont do something stupid?

This guide is for when it kicks out of 5th. Sounds like you have another problem, only advice i can give is that if something in your engine or gearbox starts rattling then stop running it immediately, before said loose object lets go and wipes out everything else around it!

Great post Mikey. It looks like the only special tool I need is a gear puller?

  • 2 weeks later...

I've got me a gear puller but must be missing a trick as I can't get the selector fork off. Any ideas?

Told you on Facebook what to do mate :)

Sorted, You have to have it in 5th, so the small end of the selector fork comes away from the gearbox, meaning everything is less of an angle. Cheers Nick

Assume it worked then lol?
