power steering light stays on

hello can sum1 please help me my power steering light is on and wondered if anyone knows a common cause its a mk 6 polo 1.9 tdi is it a fault with them i know you have to take bumper off or wheel and arch liner but i popped to motor spares down road and steering went stiff for a brief moment then light came on but it comes on when travelling not straight as soon as i start it HELP PLEASE
