As i understood it this was being trialed somewhere in the UK (scotland , irleand maybe?) but it wasnt yet in force over here same as a db limit on incar audio.

I've always thought there has been regulation on the max DB your car can produce :doubt:

On the other hand surly if it went to court where's his proof that you car was as loud as he said it is?

I don't really know how these sort of things work but there's my thoughts

Don't "just not pay it" - thats like putting your head in the sand, you will go to court for that (Look at the ticket)

Do what you said, get a garage to write down on headed paper that there is nothing wrong with it and produce that at the pig station BEFORE the date on the ticket.

I've read the ticket a few times to see if it mentions court and it just says if it's not paid in time then it'll go up to £45.

And then if you don't pay that, you get a court summons.

And if you don't go, you end up having a warrant issued, which generally results in a van full of police officers dragginf you out of bed at stupid o'clock in the morning.

that coppers claim kinda makes every other car on britains roads illegal what a crock of shite

so if real dark tints are illegal whats the issue with all the famous people having it in their cars?

cant you just tell the cop your sick grandma, who you have just takeen shopping, suffers from agrophobia <sp> and the titnts are so she cant see outside and get scared....might work!

Looooooooooooooool.....I'll remember that one!!

mot wise they can fail if louder than standard and max on the road is 89db why not take it to a test station and see what they say and to be honest i only fail them if they are realy loud so fords normaly fail he he

the exhaust is not allowed to exit the passanger side towards the kerb unles built from the factory

i was pulled the otherday for mine you have seen it its got a baffle and is quite quiet he said it was fine but thaught he saw sparks from it but he let me go no problem

called my fooking car a golf aswell

i think someone should inform suffolk police not every vw is a golf they have more than 1 model

So why don't they pull WRC cars when the rally of GB is on? They certainly have a couple(!) of modifications here and there, but are required to be road legal to drive from stage to stage! IMO, this copper is talking absolute bollocks, and is probably shagging his boss.

I suppose they would be able to use the arguement that a professionally built from the ground up rally car isn't actually modified, it's the way it was made.

The copper would have a heck of a job finding another Impreza WRC to compare it to to see if was making more noise than any other.

The whole ethos of WRC is that they are mass production cars, uprated to cope with the conditions they are put under. Other exhausts ie. powerflow and milltek are professionally made, then added. You tellin me that if you modified your Impreza to exactly the same spec as a WRC (regardless of cost obviously), you would get pulled over and they wouldn't, because you did it. It doesn't matter who built it, it's the act of modifying in the first place which is being pointed out.

"any modification to a vehicle that is not a direct replacement of standard is illegal."

I'd have said "so why are you allowed to decorate your cars in bright colours and put blue flashing lights everywhere?"

quality!!!

there cant beany laws about modifying cars he must have come straight from the school of unprofessional policing.. sounds like he got an NVQ in being a C*nt

Agrophobia; i'll remember that! You could have a fake disabled badge to uphold that story!!!

I also thought there was a certain dB limit ie; noise pollution whether it be thumping tunes or your engine. Say there must be one or constituting if a cars too loud and passed the sound limit is personal opinion. Furthermore, if its wrong to have any backboxes other then standard then wouldn't all the Halfrauds/Motorworld type jap crap boxes be branded 'off road use only' as they produce a louder tone then standard?

If it were illegal to have this modification then we would've had hundreds of posts in car forums similar to 'been pulled for stretch' etc

Think his taking you for a fool mate so find out as mentioned above about regulations and get your car sound tested. Appeal the ticket as I don't see why you should be penalized when practically every modded cars got one!

Well, i've done some research and it's in my best interests to just pay the fine, as it says on the ticket (defective exhaust, modifide from stand.", so even though i've had it sorted so it's not defective, it's still modified from standard (side exit) and technically that is illegal, so the police would most likely try and force me to take the car for a kit car test (can't remember what it's called) which is like an MOT test, but a lot stricter and costs over £300, and if it fails on anything, a retest is the same price again.

Not much help to you now, but I was in ATS bored out of my mind reading everything within reach and there was fact section about what they look for in vehicle checks. rough quote: A blowing exhaust is an M.O.T Failure. therefore the copper did have a point. but as in my first post, total jobsworth.

I believe the exact wording (or thereabout) is...

The silencer must be kept in good working condition and must not be altered after the year of manufactur in order to increase the sound level produced from the escaping gases.

Key word being "altered". So in theory if you replace the entire exhaust system with a new one it hasnt been altered at all but simply replaced. Also there is the problem that how do you prove its been done to increase the sound level produced?

My exhaust system is for performance gains only and I've actually modified it to make it quieter but do you think that will stop the Police trying to charge me under the above act? No.

I've chopped the centre silencer out of my and it's been through two MOTs with it!

Yeh, thats exactly what i was thinking. So when he said you can't modify an exhaust to be louder than standard he meant (for example) drilling a hole in your exhaust to make it louder is illegal, but buying a new exhaust system which just happens to be a bit louder isn't, but he neglected to explain that.

Just too add, my mates got an exhaust on his road legal/drag car (mk3 cortina). Exhaust is legal for road use as it is a replacement which fits in the same positions etc as original, but is altered for drag racing(therefore illegal) when he flicks a switch in the car which then opens the exhaust straight out of manifold therefore missing all silencers and gases go straight out! And this passes all MOT's and road legal as long as the switch is off.

Also a friends Polo is running a home made hand made exhaust system which runs out the passenger side rear quarter panel, this passes MOT's

and therefore road legal and was made in the shed with a welder, bender and pipe by him??

Sounds like you have just had a complete jobsworth and been real unfortunate!!

ITS THIS SIMPLE. MODIFICATIONS ARE NOT ILLEGAL. THATS THE MOST BULLSHIT I've HEARD ALL DAY

YOUR BLOWING EXHAUST HOWEVER IS. THE FACT ITS A CHAV BOX OR WHATEVER IS IRRELEVANT.

DEFECTIVE EXHAUST. SIMPLE AS THAT.

Will they arrest me and rape me?

Dont think they will arrest you.......

Funny thing is they said it was blowing from the front, took it my mechanic who said it was blowing near the back. :retard:

Anyway, went to the garage today and was pretty much told that because it is custom it could be classed as illegal, but he also said that if it declard to my I/C then it's fine...

Custom exhausts aren't illegal. Granted, they won't have an E-mark, but that doesn't mean it's not fit for the road. You could get done if the exhaust is too loud i.e. in excess of 100 Db. or if your car no longer meets the required emission level, but that's about it!

The police rarely know what they're talking about. My other half has a civic with all the lights smoothed out an replaced by LED's in the spoiler. Copper walks over and says "Get out of the car love so i can give you a ticket"............bad move.

She ripped the guy to bits, pulled out her MOT testers manual and went over the whole car. The copper ended up appologising and then congratulated her on the car.

It just goes to show that if you know what you're talking about (and don't start off by calling them a time wasting pig), then you can fight back!

Got pulled at 6am this morning, its a national crackdown apparently, his opening lines were, "I'm giving you a ticket due to the volume of your exhaust" my reply was "you what?". He got a bit arsey at this comment.

My exhaust is a standard mk3 polo exhaust, his complaint was the volume of it at acceleration. Asked my to give it some revs so i could hear as well, nothing above normal...then asked me to floor the throttle...loud noise, "thats what I'm talking about he said". told him it wasnt my exhaust but he wouldnt have it. thing is that the sound he could hear was my induction kit, quiet when applied slowly, loud when floored and i even showed him.

His explantion of my exhaust would make any car with an active exhaust system illegal as well.

Walked into cop shop this morning with crappy wet ticket and an MOT garage letter stating that the exhaust was in A1 condittion and was fitted as standard to this vehicle. Copper behind the counter called down his boss, who said "what a waste of your time", and the holy grail "I'm sorry for this"

So it looks as if there out to get us, but keep your wits about you and be mostly polite and they cant do a thing.

REMEMBER: QUESTION EVERYTHING!!!!
