I've been running mine on chopped springs for over a month now, quite low too, about 3 coils off..

Shiiter ride, but not had any problems yet, it is obviosuly unsafe though, i only did it while I'm saving up for proper suspension, as the ride height was painfully high.

yeah, its quite annoying when people can't distinguish facts from there own opinion.

it is a mot failuer for cut springs dependin on how much u cut them buy i work in a garage and weve failed a car b4 beacuse he had cut the springs it was fine on the road but if he goes air born or say the suspesion rises the spring wasnt sittin in the cup so my opinion is just fork out on the springs or even shocks cuz u get better handling then!

my springs are exactly the same as that and they haven't been cut there just -80mm, it went straight through the mot like it, the tester did mention about it but said he couldn't fail it on it.

cutting springs = shagging own mother...

most people think its wrong, but there are the odd one or two...

*and no, i'm defo with the former opinion*

cutting springs is not an MOT failure unless the spring is still secure into both upper and lower mountings and cannot come lose under no load or full load in any condition.

hence why people cable tie them to the upper n lower spring seats

It would've been seriously dangerous to cut just a quarter of a coil from a Rover Cabriolet i was asked to do. Yet on a standard MK2 Polo, its safe to cut ninety percent of only the bottom end of a front coil, and one and a half coils from either end of the rear coils.

This is why its a touchy subject. There is no answer for all cars, and there is far too much scope for novices to muck it up.

r isit i duno then to be honest mot guy myt be wrong unless its not a mot failure if ther made like that cuz i got my polo at 90mm and its fine! duno

I'd personally not chop the springs.

For one its an MOT failure so your gonna have to fork out for new springs come MOT time.

Also as said before it will rape your shocks so some MOT time again youll have to buy new shocks.

Are you sure? Or are you just telling people what you've heard before.

I cut my springs on an uprated suspension kit and it passed its MOT fine. Didn't wear out the shockers either.

Thats different as you were already using shortened uprated shocks they wouldnt wear out.

I think cut springs are dangerous. Especially as most people dont know how to do it "properly" and even when done "properly" they are still dodgy. I've seen some gnarly stuff happen cos of cut springs.

Bottom line is, they are dangerous. Just cos some people like heartagram etc have got away with using them for a while with no problems doesnt mean they wont find out some day how dangerous they are.

Tbh for the price of proper lowering springs that will handle 1000x better why would you bother?

I don't care what anyone says.

Cuttng springs is pikey as fuck, not to mention it makes your car handle like a pissed pig.

E isnt exactly safe, but its fun as hell... Just like cutting your springs.

Live a little!

Dude in the middle looks like my mate wayne...

I've been running cut lowering springs for three years now and done 70,000 miles so i can say its safe. I dont care but i cant justify spending £500 on proper coilies for the mk3, i might try those weld on sleeve kits though!

But for now there staying cut!

This subject comes up time and time again.

I'm sure we all know that cut springs aren't as good as springs manufactured to be shorter. It don't mean that you should never cut springs though.

How can a cut spring "fall out" when you're driving along? Are people getting airborne when they drive? FFS, if the spring remains seated when the suspension is at full droop it can't fall out. Even if they were able to dislocate on full droop, how is it gonna fall out with the weight of a car on it? Unless some of you corner so hard you get a wheel off the ground? This is even less likely though if you have lowered suspension.

If the springs have been cut down some stupid amount then yes they can dislocate when you jack the car up (or get airborne!) This can cause issues at some MOT stations if you get a snotty tester. However, I've run cut springs long term on 2 of my cars with no issues at all. Its all about using your noddle and only cutting a sensible amount from the spring. It's no good cutting 3 turns off a spring that only has 6 turns in the first place!

However, just look at how many people in the "VW scene" think its soo cool to run around on slammed suspension with the wheels that stick out some stupid amount and rediculously stretched tyres rubbing on the arches and the sump/exhaust rubbing on the ground everytime they go over a fag paper! "Oh I've slammed it on coilovers so it handles really well" - yeah course it does when you ain't got no suspension travel!

just a random question is it safe to lower your car by cutting the springs few of my mates have done it and i was thinking of doing it myself??

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Spend 50 quid get some lowering springs. Why not just take an angle grinder to your chassis and lose some weight. Or your block, surely you don't need all that cast iron.

What? No don't cut your springs, a car running on rubber cones would be better. Cut springs destroy everything that a car exists for. Never do it. Believe it or not they are tighter coiled at the ends than the middle for a reason.

i cut mine AGES ago.....and still going strong......

Cut springs destroy everything that a car exists for.

It exists for taking a person or people from A to B. If you cut the springs you can still take yourself and/or others from A to B.

I don't see how it takes away anything?

got can we all not just agree to dissagree, people have differant opinions and these threads go on for ever  bandwidth...

yep!

dont be gay....buy some propper shocks n springs! or dont bother at all imo.

I've got the lowest kit you can buy for a Mk2 polo and it just isnt low enougth

You dont understand how tempted i am to cut a single coil off the front ..

Despite been told not too i think I'm going to have to at some point beofre poloshow :-D

I can top my suspension out just by accelerating,i dont need to lift a wheel off the ground. The wheel moves forward, pushes the anti-roll bar forward, that pushes the front up and the shocks are pulled as far open as they'll go and my top mount caps go south and thump the strut towers. If i had loose springs, they'd fall out.

I have cut springs. They're not loose with the wheels off the ground..
