I cant see people buying uprated shocks for their chopped standard springs, rather than buying lowering springs for standard shocks.

At the end of the day,as someone else said,all springs are chopped. A spring is a spring.

You have length and strength. You can buy universal springs for some applications.

Either way,you select how low you want the car to sit,you select how much resistance you want,and then you select a suitable damper to hold the spring and control it effectively.

At the end of the day, original shocks on your average 15 year old car will be fucked anyway. As Mikey says, it's the same as putting 40 or 60mm springs on standard original shocks. They DO and WILL wear your shocks out.

So smithy... what's the difference with putting chopped springs on original shocks, and putting uprated lowering springs, on original shocks? There isn't much.

No difference, i think either way, decking a car on standard shocks will wreck them, thats all I'm pointing out, as it seems to be the most common scenario.

This brings me back to my first point,ages ago. Chopping springs can be beneficial,as long as you know what you're doing.

Fitting 40mm springs to a standard damper works,btw. This is because they are variable rate,and the first inch of travel is actually softer than a standard spring,hence normal driving doesnt stress the damper more than a standard spring.

Yes,and i dont agree with chopping a standard spring in half if you're then gonna use the standard damper. It will wreck that damper,it wont handle great,and there is a risk of the spring becoming unseated. Its also an mot failure.

But the damper will not wear due to running compressed. It will wear due to the spring rate.

If you're gonna run heavily chopped springs,use a suitable damper.

There is more to it than simply saying chopped springs are no good,which is the message some people wanna put out,just because they see it as chopping standard springs in half and still using standard shocks.

Because chopped springs can be better than any spring off the shelf in other cases - for example,no springs off the shelf may be any good for a MK2 owner running an alloy block engine.

i spose but half the people with coilies and stuff haven't told their insurance about them anyway so its all quite a pain in the arse. and you can lower coupes and saloons all you like and they look ace, but breadvans dont really get lowered much due to those rear square arches
