oversteer or understeer??

Yes i agree, maybe worded wrong, i like to drive fast if the conditions are right, the road is clear and it isn't a built up area ! But yes most peoplle dont know where the "line" is and can cross it easily.

my old mk4 used to go in a straight line no matter how hard you turned the wheel

Mine was the other way round and it certainly mate for interesting handling.

Aye i put softer springs on the front of my mk3 to aid with drastic understear .

God forbid driving in thte wet though it was scarry ..

Cant beat a nice bit of understeer eapecially when you lift off and kick the back end out.

I always leave some pretty impressive black lines around the roundabout at the top of my road :ninja: n love it

Fuck it, i drive like a nob sometimes when the mood takes me and i absolutely love it, i bet the majority of you lot do to sometimes but because your under the cover of your keyboard and monitor your going to slate anyone who may enjoy the right pedal and call them a nob ! Bollox to that.

Understeer is an issue with the 6N but with coilies, uprated arb, strut bracing and some poly bushes it does help a bit. Best is lift off oversteer though, with these mod's it very easy to do and very easy to control on the right type of corner, I've had some wkd sideways action in the valver but only in the wet as the dry would kill the tyres even faster. You just have to find these things out over time whether it be on purpose or by accident ! Just dont do it on busy roads, if i do it in the early hours so i dont scare anyone ! lol

If people want to slate me for admitting that i like to drive fast then go for it as i imagine the majority are simply hipocrits !

Peace

got 2 be honset i drive like you well done for admiting it :) but it dont do it in public places. My polo oversteers in the dry but understeers in wet

Fair play mate, don't know why everyone on here seems to be so self-righteous i'm sure everyone has driven too fast or had a 'moment' at some point! i confess to driving hard and fast at times and why not?

i live in Bracknell where there are roundabouts everywhere and all my cars have been slammed with some nice camber so i can take corners and roundabouts fast but controllable when there is minimal traffic of course! and personally think it's the measure of a drivers skill, anyone can go fast in a staight line and where's the fun in that?

my mate has a d1 drift licence and runs a 200sx but also has a g40 and he can't belive how well i can drift a fwd from my old bora to my old arosa 1.0! basically i know through practice how to handle my car and if it all goes wrong mid turn i can save it! i've had rwd bm's loads of fwd varying in power and a 4wd golf rally and dare i say a pulsar turbo, all of which have their own set of rules for control but can all be drifted safely in any conditions!

for front wheel drives you can set your suspension up to maximise either over or understeer

nose down will give greater grip on the front to a point but will understeer terribly in the wet and even if you try will find it very hard to lose the rear

arse down will hugely increase oversteer under cornering lift off or in the wet, but will understeer more in the dry

if you want to slate me crack on but i have a laugh and it's up to me if i want to wrap myself round a lamppost in bracknells traffic free industrial areas!

The advantage of even basic height adjustable coilovers is that you can alter the balance of the car so much, if you actually care about driving. I seem to have struck a balance with the Golf where although it's quite partial to understeer in the wet, it grips and grips in the dry until somehow the rear end starts to swing round perfectly controllably and helps you go round the bend. Turn in is utterly shite though, if you aren't progressive it just shoots straight on, so I see some toe changes coming on.

You speak like its a finely engineered and dialled in car

jeez, who woulda thought that every single forum would have bickering like this. arent we all supposed to get on with each other cuz were all dubnutz.

if people are gonna argue, hand out msn's to each other.

word

everyone drives how their mood takes them, not everyone is 100% safe 100% of the time.

I'm partial to a heavy right boot sometimes/most of the time :p and no one has died. You have to know your car's limits and when its safe to do what you fancy with the throttle!

Mines dropped the same all around, and it handles pretty well, i can push it and it will generally steer alright. It does understeer badly in the wet and if i turn in too hard, but the arse certainly can swing out if i tickle the brakes or lift off in 2nd or 3rd too harshly while cornering. It all depends on your ride set up and what your feet are doing, not just on where the steering wheel is going.

Errrrm no?

i have oversteered many times in my car...

almost all in the wet, and twice on the track in the dry...

because my car has nothing inside it except a dashboard, and two front seats, there is no weight in the back.

when entering a turn, try to avoid braking hard while having your steering wheel at any sevear angle..

what happens is that all the weight gets transferred to the front wheels, while nothing is on the back.

with the front end digging into the ground, the tail comes out.

advice for this situation, use your throttle pedal to chase the tail, braking makes it worse

in all other cases it understeers.

are we supposed to be arguing!?! oops!

FUCK YOU!

yea..

i feel better.

That I do toby lol

Toby, ever get lift off oversteer in your golf.. i've been trying to get some, but it won't do it :(

Mine was the other way round and it certainly mate for interesting handling.

I never drove it anywhere near hard with the coilies and 175/50s on, but it didnt really inspire to drive it quickly!

Mine was only a 1.0L and in the eyes of anyone the suspension was set up horribly, completely how it shouldn't be. But it handled really well, I mean theres only so much you can test the handling with a 1.0L but for how much it cost me and what I'd done to it, it was right fun.

The back was stripped out to, so was stupidly hard and light as fook. Make for some fun driving.

Thinking about it, I don't think it handled well. It was just fun to drive and I got used to it and knew how it was going to react so I could drive it well. I'm sure if anyone else would have got in it they would have though "what the fuck?".

I think as long as you know your car, your okay.

On standard suspension no, when I put the coilovers on still no, but I've been fiddling about and going by the suggestion of a certain rally boy from here I've dropped the arse right down (was going for rake look) and it's changed the way it drives, on hard corners you can feel the rear end doing a lot of gripping, go a bit quick then back off and it tucks back in line.

Nothing quite like my old polo though, that would try and spin you at car park speeds if you backed off

Nothing better than a bit of lift off oversteer!

I find getting home safe and well a bit better :-p

grow some balls!

my mk2 golf loves a bit of lift of oversteer, just ask youngprodigys 8-)

Right i'm going to sound like a right newb now but I think people might cut me some slack seeing as i'm not on the roads yet personally!

Firstly a very interesting topic haha, and one of the reasons I joined up wasn't just because i'm getting a mark 3 polo as my first car, but also to learn new things obviously :).

So I'm guessing when everyone says "lift-off oversteer" that's basically when you're giving it some throttle up to a bend/corner/roundabout whatever then lift off and the back end decides to go for a wonder... sideways?!?

Find it quite interesting the fact that due to you lifting off the throttle the back end will (given the right situations/suspension set up) start to slide out a tad?

Just curious that's all

Josh.

It's all to do with weight transfer and centre of mass.

Nail the loud pedal and the weight is transfered rearward, taking the weight off the front wheels (which is why RWD cars get off the line better). Lift off again and the weight is transfered forwards, making the rear end light and therefore more likely to wander should you steer at the same time!

Lower the centre of mass in the car and you get less weight transfer. Stiffen the rear suspension and you get less weight transfer to the rear (increasing grip off the line in FWD cars), stiffen the front suspension and you get less weight transfer to the front and therefore less lift off oversteer.

IN GENERAL.

i do, for me its just before 8k
