cheers mucker, a fire extinguisher would have meant i could have tackled the initial fire, i would have fubarred the carbs but that would be a noble sacrifice to save the whole car. so definatly i would recommended everyone have one and have it easily accessible.

i was t hinking about taking a video of it burning but i couldnt as it would break my heart watchin it back but on reflection the pics did come out cool. iwas expecting the pikeys to come out from behind the trees salivating over scrap metal

This won't console you, but I tell all my mates to carry a fire extinguisher in the car with them in case of someting like this. I reckon it should be law for all cars to carry them, cos if it had gone up on the motorway, it would've been a hell of a tailback. Shame it has to happen this way, but I bet a lot of people go out and get one this week, especially those people who have invested a lot of time and effort into their cars like this one. For the sake of £20, it's worth it to save a car.

I'm not being funny mate about this, have you ever experienced a car fire yourself?? The things go up so quick, by the time you have pissed around getting your £20 fire extinguisher to squirt a 10 second amount of powder on an electrical fire, it's about as much use as a chocolate fire guard.

TBH I would much sooner (as heart breaking as it is) get yourself & passengers out of the car safely & a safe distance away as quick as possible and watch it burn. Life is too short & precious to mess about with. So what if it causes a tail back!!!!

I also hear (I don't know how true this is) but if you do manage to put a fire out in your car, the insurance people will not pay out for any damage caused. How true this is I don't know?? (awaits to be shot down in flames)

I've not had a fire, no, I carry one to cover if anything goes up in the cabin more than anything else, your knackered if the engine goes, as in this case (what with all the fuel and that). I agree that getting people out and safe is priority No. 1, I'd rather carry one around with me just to be on the safe side. As I said, I wouldn't wish this on anyone, especially such a nice VW as this one.

phoned the insurance they are sending someone round to collect it and take it to a compound (i got it recovered to my drive atm) the claims person will come out decide whats what and get back to me.

tbqf i aint arsed if they pay out or not, it was third party fire and theft. whether that means vehicle fires like this or arson i dont know, ill leave it to the insurance to decide, claims assessor will come and look at it in the week.

things that survived, oil cooler, splitter, tinted indis, soem of the chrome metalwork bar being a bit burnt its got that psd manifold type effect on it haha, err polished petrol cap and luckily my locking wheel nut key

and i know what you mean danny, the lad who took me thr ough it all is gonna be gutted when i tell him. arrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggh they sounded so good too.

i wish it was me just baked by a bbq damnit posing by an mot'd car but at least i didnt spend the money on the mot today so theres some solace

I'm so sorry Saf, as if my mk2 getting totally mashed up the arse and nearly killing me wasn't bad enough- 1 week later and this happens to you! Come to Derby when you're exams are finished and you've got the insurance stuff sorted, we can drown our sorrows and smoke our troubles away :) (not too much for me though due to the massive amounts of painkillers I'm on ).

You know where we are if you need any help or just someone to chat to- you have no idea how confused I was when you rang the house phone, and gutted when I found out why. If you want to borrow my mk2 gti til you get somethin sorted you're more than welcome...
