If i carn't get a half decent quote on a mk2 Golf gti 8v I'm going to look into doing the 1.6 16v gti motor or maybe supercharging this one...

i considered that a while ago and tryin to run it on G40 managment , That would be rude if you did that !! full on torque monster

Yeah it wouldnt be too hard to do as i have the inlet modded already, the problem is the internals. I have it on good authority 120bhp with boost would be pushing it :( which is pointless when thats a sensible target N/A

If you do want to sell it id be interested in it when my insurance renewal comes up in October :)

I love this build thread, its different to the usual engine conversions IMO.

I stand corrected on 1.6 6N torque/bhp figures - despite how odd that seems it's right apparently - but I'm gonna have to stick my smartarse oar in again.

G40 engine management won't work on a naturally aspirated engine, surely. Even if you could make it work, why would you unless you've got a turbo/supercharger? It's the same Bosch digifant management you get on a GT but with a few small differences, such as a MAP sensor instead of an air flow meter. You wouldn't get any benefits just because it's from a more powerful car.

The best thing to do is have your car mapped and setup properly on a rolling road, using bigger injectors. If you fit a performance cam you'll sacrifice your low end torque slightly, which will close the gap between your bhp and lb/ft figure. The AEE is, I assume, meant for low rev town driving rather than being ragged.

Alex he was talking about using a supercharger and the G40 managment.

Yeh sorry i was talking about with a charger !

The plan is to run it on bigger injectors out of a 16v as they fit and share alot of the same connections then once I'm happy with the engine i will get it mapped accordingly, I understand it was built for town driving but i personnally want a bit more top end.

@ Carver if the internals are weak then i would run 1.6 GTi bottom end with AFH top end as its ment to be a mean combination.

  • Author

Yeah thats an alternative, although i have heard the Gti bottom ends arn't much better.

Good thing about the Golf engines you can just stack two head gaskets and run some boost

Matt, you might want to check your air fuel ratio because bigger injectors might not actually get you any more power, infact is could lose you power!

The weak point in the 1.6 is the rods but GTIs have better ones. :)

My 1.4 GT was like that - 93bhp and 108lbft of torque. My Mk2 was someting like 76bhp and 80lbft. The figures are skewed because they are heavily restricted top-end. De restrict them with some headwork and some better manifolds and the figures will sort themselves out, ie you might not get much more torque, but it wont fall away as quick and your hp figure will look more like your torque figure.

mk2 8v GTIs are definately slower off the line - according to my santa pod experience. :)

hmm 16v supercharged 1.6 could be interesting in a polo...

Noooooo i want a Golf :-p I can imagine them being slower of the line but hoping a 20vt conversion next year will sort that :)

Of course G40 management will work on an n/a car - after all, that's what a G40 is when you've not got the BRV closed. It's quite possible to achieve decent driveable results by fitting a more suitable MAP sensor to a G40 ECU and remapping it to control an n/a engine - but largely pointless as there's GT Digifant for the n/a cars!

It's not uncommon to see G60 management being used on n/a cars on the continent or in the US, presumably because more tuner effort went into reverse engineering the G60 code than bog standard Digifant II.

Drifting further off-topic, have you had your remap done yet Alex?

Not yet, hopefully by the end of March. And I stand corrected. Again. Surprised too.

These turned up in the post the other day

Image149.jpg

I have been using some crappy CL clocks for a while now due to my GT clocks being foooobared

Swapped them over, had to use the CL casing for now until i find a GT case.

Image152.jpg

Its nice to have a rev counter again

Heres how i did my wiring on the RCL

Image153.jpg

It now has loom wrap around the wires.

Carver, Have you got any pics of the CL on the inside of the door? like where you put the motors etc?

I have exactly the same kit (just with only 1 carbon remote, other is plastic ) And I'll be fitting it when the doors come off for respray.

Would be good to have pics so I can just shove it on and not have to figure things out

  • Author

I havn't got any but theres really only one place you can put it. Heres a really shit example

centrallocking.jpg

The door bevels out from the inside so you can screw the motor there and the window doesn't hit it.

Things to remember:

When fitting the motor make sure the door is locked and the motor is in the locked position or the other way round.

Make sure the window can go all the way down without hitting the motor or wires.

Its quite easy just think before drilling.

are you still running the ABU cam in it? I think you'll unleash more top end power if you put the GT cam into it. Specs I've found for the cams suggest the gt one is slightly longer duration (from what I could see, abu is 209deg and GT cam is 219deg, presumably they are both symmetrical).

  • Author

Still using the ABU cam, I have a GT cam sat under my bed I just havn't got round to fitting it. Should see 2 - 3bhp more although the 1.6 cams arn't far off the GT cam so it wont be a massive difference.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm currently in a huge argument with my m8, got an AEE from a polo mk4. done 130thou. head needs doing. but the argument is....

can i get that AEE in my polo mk3. i didnt think so. but i am clearly wrong! hands down to you my friend! that engine is one hell of an engine...i had the 1.6 engine block COMPLETLY standard, only the gearbox ratio was same as a 1.4 box. could only do 100mph but i have eaten cars with 150bhp poss 160. so much tourqe in it i snapped 2 mounts!!!!

now cant wait to take it out my ibiza (crashed running a red wrote the fucker off) so its DEFFO going in my polo now! just one thing i need to know....

what box should i use? thinking of using a GT box but think the G40 one would survive. as that AEE WONT be standard for much longer.

things I'm going to do to it.....

port polish head,

GT injectors (as of reading this lol)

high lift cams (or might try a 1.8 cam from golf mk2/3

lighten and ballance flywheel

think thts it really. fuck knows how many horses tht will add any ideas?

btw the black GT is lovley!

It fits in the mk3 polo fine, although theres only two bolt boles on front mount mount rather then 3 but its been alright without it.

I'm using an 8P box which is from a 1.3 5 speed CL, i wouldnt use a GT box. The setup i have it revs from 1k to 5k pretty quick so you dont really need shorter gears as it can pull the box really well. The GT box will give a bigger burst of power but for a shorter time, i prefer it to pull for longer and on the strip theres very little difference although the GT box will feel quicker but will be pretty crap on fuel.

G40 box, too rare and the 8P box can take some serious abuse (trust me )

Have a careful read of this thread as it covers most problems, if your going to use GT injectors then you need to get the inlet modded to fit the AEE head.

I'm using Golf GTI injectors which prove to work well although they do run a tad rich.

If your doing the head make sure you get the stem seals from VW they fail on every 1.6 i have seen.

My setup is putting around around 100bhp at the moment and its massively restricted by the exhaust but 110bhp+ is achievable.

Golf cams won't fit mate, you wont a cam from a mk3 GT or an aftermarket cam like a 268.

hope that helps.

hi I'm about to do this to my mk2 breadvan on bike carbs.

how did you get about the engine mount above the aternator? i thaught maybe put a plate inbertween the block and mount then bolt the top two to the block and just a bolt and nut tough the bottom on?

what about the gearbox mount aswell as I'm only 4 speed atm?? is that a standard 5 speed gt mount?

cheers

  • Author

You can put an extra support for the front engine mount but I havn't and its been fine.

The gearbox mount is a 5 speed CL box.

aah right, thanks for the advice carver. when i get arround to doing it, will need advice n whatnot so will email you or summert if i need some lol.

u got any vids yet? wanan see it runnign lol

  • Author

Yeah no worries mate.

I still need to get some vids done, I just dont have time to play with the car these days what with uni :(

just read the whole post again, didnt see anyone ask this.....what wiring loom did you use!? as i type my mates taking out my ibiza loom and EVEYTHING is wrapped up in one loom! :x its not all bad like, although i would need to replace the clocks, engine loom, heater matrix etc

so if you could let me know what loom you had used i shall see about getting it!

plus, inlet mani, mines the plastic one, see that matt davis has same one lol. what mani would be best for performance? not really bothered about mpg, just want performance and reliability.

cheers in advance

  • Author

Read the full thread mate, pretty much everything is covered. I used a GT wiring loom because I'm using everything from a mk3 GT. Inlet had to be cut and mated to an ABU inlet (nightmare)

If your after performance then you need to use everything from a mk3 GT with bigger injectors and pref a remap.

You might be better off speaking to matt davies about keeping the same inlet and ECU, he got 98bhp with minor mods in comparision mine is about the same power but mine doesnt have a full exhaust system which iirc he has.
