1.6 GT Project

Featured Replies

ah GT loom. might be alot easier if i use tht loom too. although for the time being I'm keeping my engine standard, will put out a fair bit of tourqe though on a 1.3 box, had that engine running on a 1.4 mk4 box and it put out so much tourqe it actually snapped the front engine mount bolt clean in half!

pulled so well in eveygear even at low revs too which was impressive! had a 150bhp vectra off the line (in his defence he was a shit driver) lol also ate a golk mk3 1.8 8v bout 100bhp (really good driver)

gonna keep the standard inlet for now, might do what you did and get someone to fabricate a new inlet to house some bigger injectors, someone mentioned polo GTI 16v ones will work, might give that a go!

Sounds good mate.

Mines pretty quick off the line I have had many many cars off the line, they carn't compete with the weight of a mk3 and a pokey 1.6.

AEE Stripdown

I decided to strip the old AEE down today as it was a nice day and I had nothing on.

To recap, I took the head off my old AEE 1.6 engine to replace the dodgey valve stem seals as it used to burn oil briefly when starting in the morning which looked gash. I relapped the valves, new stem seals and a fresh head gasket and bolts.

Started it up and it sounded awful, switched it off, checked the timing and that was fine. Took it for a spin thinking it might be a dodgey tappet. Pulled like it did before but gutted it still sounded the same. Just as I came into the uni car park I was leaving a big fat trail of blue smoke behind me :-( was gutting after doing so much work in the cold on my own.

Had to get RAC'd home and I swapped the whole lot for an ABU engine as I only had a week before I had to be back at uni.

So the head is off, as you can see cyl 1 is culprit of the blue smoke.

cyl 2,3. Bone dry after standing for a month and months

cyl 4

Pretty evidant cyl 1 is the problem

I have turned the head over by hand and it turns alright, none of the valves look obviously bent but its hard to say without taking them out...

Cam is fuckered.

Image026.jpg

You can just about make out on this pic theres a inbrint of the pistons, I could only see it on piston 1 but when I cleaned the other 3 they all had them. Not sure if they should be there or if the valves have kissed the pistons at some point, anyone know?

CIMG6334.jpg

Comments welcome, I dont know if I can be bothered to take the head apart and check if the valves are bent as its scrap anyways.

id take it appart, just to see whats what. the cam shim looks to be a bit worn, are they all like that? or just the one? if just the one id say theres you are culprit.

Yeah I have decided I'm going to take the head apart when I get a valve compressor. Most of the lobes are like that...

I'm pretty sure its a problem with No.1 valve but carn't say for sure until I rip it apart.

Just putting a list of my plans for the car this summer. More to do then I thought but I have decided to keep it until I'm 21 and it will be needed everyday so it needs to be 100% reliable which means spending some moneys on her.

To Fix/Replace

Replace gearbox & clutch with GT items (Yep, I'm going to try a GT box on it. I think 1st and 2nd will be useless but it should be pretty quick in 3rd and 4th as it's not bad now with the longer 8P box :-p )

VW engine mounts (GSF items are crap)

VW blue temp (Replacing the GSF one)

Replace headlight, indicator, wing and front panel (Damage from next door reversing into the car xmas eve :x )

Replace brake pads (maybe discs) and bleed brakes (dead bread after mucho abuse for 8 months :paranoid: )

Replace ARB bushes (may as well)

Replace suspension, top mounts and bushes (Well knackered, need to work out what I can afford)

Replace exhaust (Ideally want a 4 branch and a g40 backbox)

Tidy interior (bits hanging off from previous owner)

Remove rust on door and wing

Remove head, new guides and valve stem seals. Replace head gasket, rocker cover, service tappets or replace (Will try not to fuck it this time)

Oil change

P&P throttlebody

Check and repair engine loom (Looking tatty)

Clean and rebuild alternator (Very oily and not charging the battery very well)

New engine earths (They look past it)

And finally some alloys, then i'll be happy for a while.

I also plan to try the GT injectors on this with a chip to see if it runs lean as the Golf injectors are abit overkill at lower revs although I dont have any problems with overfueling as such.

Should be a beast after the new gearbox and other mods. Hoping to get round to fitting the GT cam too.

Picked these up the other day for a good price imo.

14" BBS Ra's from a mk2 Golf GTI, not sure what tyre I'm going for yet, most likely Toyo 185/60/14 with a 60/60 drop :-p

They won't be going on untill the bodywork and engine bits are sorted but should be all done before September.

Cant wait for this too be finished, Should be very nice to drive if mines anything to go by. My 4th from 40 will pull linearly all the way to 90 :D

Have you found that the power is always there no matter what gear your in ?

  • Author

Yeah mine pulls well in any gear really, particulary 3rd

After driving the nuts off it I have decided a GT gearbox might actually suit it. So i'm on the look out for one of them as well as a decent exhaust. Hoping to be at some meets this year with it.

i need to stick my engine in ASAP! i need a GT clutch and a 5 speed gearbox! either 4 speed or a 5 speed one for the time being!

it will pull well better with a 1.3 box on, i had a 1.4 mk4 polo box on my AEE in my ibiza and it pulled (in 5th at 60) could reach 90 in under 10 seconds! loved it!

Dont worry about a GT clutch mate, I'm using a normal 1.3 clutch/flywheel/bell housing. Its only slipped once and I was giving it way too much up a hill, infact I might have caught the pedal abit as well. Mine pulls nicely with the 1.3 box but I'm going to try a GT box when I find one locally.

There was a lad on here a while back with a mk2 polo, 1.6 AEE with bike carbs and a 4 speed box. He posted a video and it looked mental

ah, well was thinking can i use my origonal 1.6 clutch and bell housing as its a relitivly new clutch but think it would be to big. am i right?

  • Author

iirc the 1.6 bell housing hole is too small for the mk3 gearbox shaft and the 1.6 clutch is too big/different to the mk3 bell housing . So better off with the mk3 clutch and flywheel.

185/60 r14 will probably give you arch problems, I'm down 80/60 with 185/55 and had to get the scaffold pole out to stop scrubbage over medium-large bumps. I would suggest 195/45 if you can.

Good work with the motor tho

i'm 50/40, mk2 coupe, 185/55/14s on castalettes, little bit of scrubbing on the front of the front wheel arch when you batter it through corners, more to do with the caster i have from the subframe i think. had 185 60s, they rubbed at the back and looked poop.

Did some work on the car today, to be honest i have ran it into the ground over the last 8 months. Uni has meant its been neglected but I need to start fixing it up before I go back to uni.

I have wanted to try the GT injectors on it for a while but didn't want to risk running lean and melting something, today I decided I may as well try them now and if it blows up i'll buy a mk2 Golf

Image004.jpg

Image003.jpg

So after fitting them, started it up to check for leaks and the first thing I noticed was the smell. Usually its a quite a rich smell from the exhaust but now it smells much better. You can tell there isn't a CAT on the system but it doesn't smell like a knackered old car now

First impressions are it seems to idle better when going from 3k down to idle, with the Golf gti injectors it used to sit at 1k for a second and then drop down to 900ish. Now it goes straight down :-)

It doesn't seem to bog down or show any signs of running lean which is good although I carn't be sure as the max I could get upto was 4.5k before hitting 60mph which wasn't ideal for where I was.. but I think it's an improvement mainly because of the smell and petrol won't be running down the bores into the oil. I think I will get a poloace chip for it and it should be spot on.

Thats all for now. I should be stripping the car down in two weeks to rebuild the head, brakes, bodywork ect ect

this is a bit of a dumb question.... can you fit a 1.3 head onto either the AEE or the ABU bottom end? and which one did you find to be better the AEE or the ABU? thinking about doing a similar conversion into my mark2 but hoping a gt head fits onto the 1.6 bottom end and possibly using throttle bodies depending on time and money.. help appreciated

cheers matt

p.s very interesting thread and a good read

nope wont fit a aee block. ou could get the mk3 golf abd 1.4 though and that bolts straight up.but more torque.

if your considering running throttle bodys/carbs you may aswell just use the whole aee e.c.t and a in-line fuel pump e.c.t

ok thanks for your help :)
