ohh, thought you was doing an AEE for some reason. Are the rocker covers the same style on the abd and aee?

Rocker cover in avatar is off a felicia, same as all the mk4 ones you see. Was very tempted to go the AEE route but a nice ABD came up and I couldnt refuse.

Carnt fault you, ABD is alot less hassle then the AEE.

Hopefully will be worth it though.

Replaced the bootlid today, mine had a bad piece of rust under the number plate and found a bootlid cheap (cheers Tom)

Stripped everything off the boot, didnt bother taking the number plate lights off as they are foobared.

After some fettling boot on, back window wiper motor on, havnt bothered putting the trim on yet. Going to paint them this week and get some new number plate lights

Engine Removal:

Essential tool for engine removal:

Camera Battery died half way through, engine is out now. Had to cut through the drivers driveshaft due to the very last bolt not coming undone from the gearbox

Exhaust manifold was siezed as always too, the two bolts on each end for some reason all the others came out fine but had to grind the other two off.

Not bad for a days work, about 6 hours working on my own and with basic tools.

Engine in next week :-)

You know what gearbox are you going to use?

Tempted by an 1.6 myself, but could do with a decent 5th gear for the uni commute Not sure I'm going backwards by increasing displacement in search of economy. My 1.3 Formel E sits 'economically' at about 60-65. You using a GT TB?

Still havnt decided on gearbox yet. Very tempted to use a GT gearbox until i go back to uni and then change to a CL box before uni starts again.

I'm going to be using a GT TB, will be porting it out abit in the future.

I dont think there will be a massive difference in mpg with the 1.4 and the 1.6.

I'm abit shit at keeping the updated but its coming on now, i have sold my red GT to fund this so things are coming along.

Updates then:

Flywheel is on properly now, new bolts and torqued up

Clutch is aligned and bolted up

gearbox is ready to go on!

Unfortunetly i didnt get working on the car till about 6ish as i had to wait for the flywheel bolts to arrive.

I powered through though, the engine will be in tomorrow!

I still need to bolt the g/box up, starter motor, grind some metal off the tensionor bolt and put the alternator on.

I also invested in some new exhaust studs, manifold and downpipe ones as well as new nuts, well worth it i should think.

This could be a stupid question, but has anyone tried a G40 gearbox on a GT or that? Cause a G40 box would cope with your 100+ bhp!!

If not, Quaife do some drool-over-me custom race gearboxes which would make a hole in your wallet...

I dont know anyone with a G40 box on a GT, its not needed really and G40 boxes are exspensive now days, I'm going to be using an 8P box (1.3 spi) they are strong boxes which should easily cope with what power I'm going to be putting out :-)

The engine is finally in! :-)

It was a tight fit but it went in with a tickle.

A note to anyone thinking of putting an engine that wasn't designed to go in a mk3 polo.... be prepared because nothing fits!

Simple jobs like putting the alternator on... the arm :smirk:doesnt fit the block without grinding some metal away, the alternator pulley rubs on the lower cam cover, the alt pulley rubs on the tensionor bolt....

All of which can be sorted with some delicate grinding, just dont expect anything to go straight on

Definetly not an engine conversion for the 1st timer.

Anyway i have annoted a few pics for future reference.

Sitting in the bay, it looks quite strange, it definetly looks bigger in the bay...

I will be getting the rocker cover off at a later date for some serious polishing :-)

Here are just a couple of the things that need grinding abit.

Things to do:

Put rear engine mount on

sort the inlet problem out

Put the starter motor in

New driveshaft and bolt to g/box

plug everything in

fit radiator

coolant

oil change

fuel filter chance

service

......yeah theres quite abit to do!

good progress on this mate, bet it was good to get the engine in and loosely bolted in, even if it did mean a plethora of more jobs to do.

Hopefully the inlet will get finished in the next couple of days and i can take it for a spin :-)

Now the engine is in properly i had a look at the deep sump id heard about ............. its low put it that way, i think if i was 60mm down on 13's i would have issues with the sump being too close to the floor. At a later date i will change the sump for an early polo one for more clearence but seeing as I'm keeping the suspension standard for abit its all good

Cheers mate, feels like its dragged on now because i went on holiday half way through the project, and what with having to wait to sell my red GT for funds ect i just carn't wait to finish it. It was a really good feeling as i lowered the engine in, even though it was pissing down nothing was going to stop me getting it in that day.

When its up and running ill take you for a spin mate, I'm due a visit up looms so might see you up there.

That'll be a torque steering bitch. Stick a CL badge on it and make people think its a 1043cc lol. I'm still considering this project too, altho I got a nice quote on a Scirocco GTII

aha hoping to surprise a few people in this. Keeping the GT badges man! Never had them on my GT conversion!
