Hey guys,

Would this engine fit in a MK2. With respect to the engine mounts. As the engine mount on the MK2 on the gearbox side is underneath aand to the rear.

Has anyone dropped one of these in a mk2?

dude.. i miss the way the 8v engine used to sound..

take out the middle resonator, de-cat, and put a cherry bomb on it:)

sounds smooth when driving normal, bassy and non rice when going for it.

post a video: )

I love the sound of it, i have removed the cat and middle silencer, once i have a decent back box and the golf gti afm on i'll get some vids up.

Not updated this for a while, mainly because nothings been happening. Today I finally fitted my Golf gti AFM, did some cutting and glueing and made it fit the polo airbox

It drives 100% better now, alot smoother and refined. Not had chance to test it performance wise what with the weather atm but I'm sure it will help at higher revs.

Next things on the list are GT cam, g40 backbox and ported throttle body and a chip. Might get a 4 branch for it after xmas depending on how much work it needs for its MOT this week 8-)

Its in desperate need of a wash, 2 months without a wash so far :lol: dirty slaggggg.

MOT time is always fun, nothing like driving away the same day with a fresh ticket. most things you should be able to assess yourself, have you had an MOT with the 1.6 engine yet? emission test might have something to say.

First MOT with the 1.6 engine, hence why i have sorted the gti afm out. Its quite good on fuel to say I'm just tricking the ECU with bigger injectors. If it fails on idle i will put polo GT injectors on and drive it steady to the MOT garage.

Woop its passed it MOT :-D

I was abit concerned about the emissions with the golf gti injectors but it was fine! only an advisory for the crap exhaust blowing but that will be in the bin soon

Update!

Well 4 months on and the engine now needs some work, i pretty much got the engine running properly and went off to uni and have been doing 200 miles a week in it with no problems. It even sailed through its MOT sporting a set of Golf gti injectors

However, two months ago i noticed some blue smoke when starting it after it being stood overnight. This has been diagnosed as valve stem seals. The theory being they dried out whilst the engine was stored.

And now its showing signs of the head gasket failing although it doesnt over heat.

GSF had everything in stock as usual (Y)

I already have a few bits at my flat like oil, new rad switch ect so roll on tomorrow!

I'll hopefully have chance to P&P my throttle body and match the inlet abit better.

Also bought a valve grinding stick and paste to freshen the head up a bit.

i Love this project, gives me ideas for my ickle engine !!

Can you replace the valve stem seals without removing the head do you know ??

And are you going to RR day ?

Nice... i think mines got the symtoms of HGF aswell. Whats a valve grinding stick?

  • Author

Matt - you can, you need to remove the cam and use compressed air to stop the valve dropping into the piston. Easy if you have a compressor and the tools. I might be at the rolling road day, not sure yet...

You use it to lapp the valves in, creates a good seal between the valve and seat.

cheers , oh ok then be interested to see what you ran.

do you know what limits the AEE standard management so much ??

The injectors, inlet, ECU map - everything basicly lol.

ey, when are we gonna get those sound clips ;)

Within the next few weeks :ninja:

what does this rev too ??

cause my AEE revs to 5.5k then would bounce at 6K

  • Author

It will rev to the GT limiter which is 7200 iirc but theres no need to rev that high, ill usually take it to 6.5k if I'm really giving it some but 6k is where the power slopes off ready for a load more torque when you change gear.

I love this thread. awsum car, you never got in touch about the heater resistor dude. 5er at the RR day yeah?

Edited by jay135

oh ok, just trying to wrok out if it was safe to rev it that high and more to the point if it worth while. i know on mine it seems to pull hard up to the red line. but looking to get a cam and remap in the future so just wanted to establish a sfae rev limit, so thank you.

Sorry mate, i completely forgot about that. I dont think i can make the rolling road day now

I can post it you no problem, let me know if thats cool.

They arn't a revvy engine by nature, but you can make them rev but you risk breaking the bottom end. Mine has a mk3 flywheel which makes it rev quicker then a normal GT, if your serious about tuning the AEE i would get it on GT injection and get it mapped. It will make more power as the inlet flows loads better then the AEE one.

:( Bummer, any chance you can give it to somebody to bring it to the RR day, sorry for thread spammage!!

I'm up in Huddersfield at the moment which is the reason I'm not going as its too far and I'm skint. :(

I'll let you if i can think of anyone up here thats going, its prob only £1 postage anyway as its only small and light.

oh ok then well i shall look in to it !!how much did it cost you for your manifold ?? and do you know if mk2 golf gti injectors will fit onto my loom ?

Cheers

Pretty sure you cant fit gti injectors to your inlet or fuel rail.

I paid £110 for him to do the inlet, it was done properly - skimmed, welded ported ect but a GT inlet will set you back £25 - £30 although mine was free.. and then you need the ABU inlet which should be about £10 - £15 from scrappers

He said if i wanted another doing it would be cheaper as he knows how long it will take him next time.

I was thinking about getting a few made up but it depends what people will pay for them.
