Do yours look like that?

If so the plug looks completely wrong, i suppose you could use GT injector plugs but i have no idea what the ECU will think to that.

  • Author

Look how small the injector opening is, hence only making 75bhp.

yeh think they look like that!!

oh ok will have to have a think!! cheers for your help. Will have to see what i run in a few weeks and go from there !!

just noticed the thing above your avatar !!

Have you blown it up ??

  • Author

Yep, something has gone internally. Although i think it might have been my fault, and it wasn't done by driving it.

How have you done it then ??

  • Author

I actually dont know yet, i had the head off to replace the stem seals and head gasket and now its smoking and knocking.

Not sure whats gone yet but no compression on cylinder 1, just going to bang another engine in and then strip this down to see whats gone on it.

Shame, do you think you can get hold of one easily ??

Does that mean you may have a spare AEE Head ??? :unibrow:

Shite, spare engine is definately the best option... I'm going to pick one up soon aswell.

They are suprisingly hard to find for the right money. Loads on ebay but theres no chance I'm paying £200 for one

Alreet folks.

I've had a shit week, started off by getting a £90 parking fine for parking outside my own flat :smoke: (won the appeal  )

I then stupidly took apart my car at uni and it was a disaster.

I took the head off to replace the valve stem seals which i thought were leaking, all wen't okay new seals lapped the valves in and bolted everything back together with a new HG and a service. However upon starting it i knew something was wrong, it didn't sound too bad until the tappets settled and i could quite clearly here a knocking. :-( after some messing around checking things over i realised it was missing on cylinder 1! Spark and fuel but no bang. Although the car actually drove fine on 3 cylinders :| It then started smoking when warm, i nearly pulled the matches out :-(

So basicly did something wrong, not sure what yet as i havn't had chance to strip the engine down again but take it from me, take your time if your doing engine work!!! There is no room for error, and you will regret not double checking everything when it breaks. It looks to be a problem with the no1 valve/s as it has damaged the cam lobes

So i got recovered by the RAC and they took me home (legend, he asked if i wanted to stop at the shop to get some beers for the journey  )

Anyways i picked a new engine up today from the same place i got the AEE from. They didn't have an AEE so i went with the ABU, its an early one with the mk3 style rocker cover and doesn't have a seperate tensioner which is handy for service as its cheaper  Hopefully its a good runner, otherwise ill be seriously

So in the last 4 hours i have:

Removed old engine

Stripped the parts off i need (gearbox, inlet, flywheel, clutch, oil sensors ect)

Started removing the old shit from the ABU wihch is a SPi and has more plugs then whole of a GT loom

I then had to abort mission due to rain and i had a million tools and parts scattered in the dark, so i have pallet wrapped both engines and will continue tomorrow!

No pics yet as i dont have my phone cable here with me but i shall get some up asap.

I'm pretty gutted about the AEE dieing as it was one of the good AEE's but I'm going to strip it right back and fix it to either sell on or as a spare engine.

Thanks for reading, i was tempted to break the car but I'm going to give it another go

sounds like you've had a right mission....hope everything gets better mate!

shame , what the ABU set you back ??

Cheers mate.

I paid £90 for it, came with the old throttle body and inlet ect (spi) so might be of use to someone if anyone needs one.

The worst 4 days of my life, random rain, consistantly cold and fitting an engine in the dark

So i broke my AEE whilst trying to fix it, oops.

Engine out

Not sure whats wrong with it yet

Depending on time and money I'm going to strip it down and if its the head that needs work i will repair it along with a P&P and it might go back in the GT although i do like the ABU's simpleness compared to the AEE

I spent some time swapping all the parts over from the AEE to the ABU and sorting a few niggles out.

Image026-1.jpg

Dropped it in and got it all plugged in, it started first time :-o sounds sweet, had a ball ache with the coolant system pressureizing but thats sorted now.

I still need to time it up properly and do a few things before i can drive it properly.

ul mate at least you are on with a winner... when you find out what hppened with the aee let me know.. depending on what has gone.. i may take it off your hands...

will do mate, hoping to strip it down next weekend. I think the head will need rebuilding. I will probably sell the head and i will use an ABU head with the AEE bottom end.

Then i can spend a while painting the engine up and getting it perfect to drop in when summer arives. If ever.

good to see you get it sorted !!

does it feel any different with the ABU over the AEE ??

  • Author

I havn't had it over 1/4 throttle as the i dont have a timing gun so its just guessed and i dont want to break it lol

Also the cambelt needs changing which I'm doing tomorrow, technically it should be slightly slower as it has a lower compression ratio then the AEE but i might get the head skimmed to make up for it. :unibrow:

what was wrong with the cooling system in the end mate?

I had the bottom radiator pipe in the place where the waterpump to thermostat housing should go so no water could get to the radiator hence is boiling the water quickly! It was only when i had sat down had some food and thought about it that i realised. I had to get it working that day so the pressure of that and other things didn't help. All good now though!

same thing happened to me the first time i changed a thermostat on my GT... realised pretty quickly what was up so no damage there.

Glad the beast is up and running again!
