Yeah i suppose, dont know what its like to polish though

i heard that to !! i think some chrome spray will make it shine :D

Hi ash.

Haven't been on cp for ages and I've just read your thread. Thats sad dude, i didnt know you'd broke it. At least your back on your feet and getting it sorted. I saw my old gt this weekend. Toms had it to do the head gasket. I was quite sad when it drove away. I so miss the noise and power. My 9n is quiet and slow lol

Hey Ema!

I've missed it the last two weeks, carn't wait to go for a good run and put it through its paces abit. I was thinking about selling up and getting a Golf gti but i can only afford to insure and run an 8v so i may as well keep the polo as its probably faster.

Which means its getting a SS exhaust and a cam, maybe a remap as well!

If you ever do sell then i might be interested !!

UPDATE.

Well i broke down to day, well the car not me although i was close  Managed 14 miles when it started bogging and smoking like a diesel.

I left it for a few minutes and it started again, did about 200 yards and that was it. Dead. After checking fuel pressure, spark plugs, leads ect i found that it would run with the blue temp sensor unplugged but no chance with it plugged in.

So i drove it home with it unplugged  it was slower then my sisters 3cyl 1.0 corsa! So i went to GSF got a new one as well as some decent ABU spark plugs as i was using the AEE ones (different CR bla bla) took it for a spin and instantly could tell it was better, it drives perfectly now. Still need to do the ignition timing although i dont think its out by much.

When i was having problems with the coolant system boiling i think thats what killed it, or certainly damaged it. Hopefully i just need to tidy some bits up and i can get some uni work done!

i think mine is lightly out but it drives so nicely !! Its really Revvy and i Love it .

My temp sensor went and mine drove like a bag of spuds ! Well glad its all ok now.

Have you given it bean with the ABU lump ?? Does it feel any different to the AEE ??

  • Author

I gave it some in 1st and 2nd i soon hit 60, so far it doesn't feel that much difference to the AEE but i carn't compare as the timing hasn't been setup.

I will only be able to compare them when i get it on the roads i used to use the AEE on. The cam looks bigger so that might be how it makes up for the lower CR.

Good work, shouldn't imagine you'll feel the difference from 9.5:1 > 9:1 compression?

What speed do you hit 60 in each gear with your box (8p)? Also what wheel/tye combo are you using?

  • Author

I'm still on standard GT tyres  165/65/13 iirc

Not really sure as i tend to keep it away from the limiter and 3rd is right on the powerband for pulling 40mph to 60mph++ so i dont really push it too much in 2nd. Its probably around 50 in 2nd gear as it doesn't rev that high but 3rd gear is :D

That may be my recduced wheel spinning then, i'm using 195/45/13 and 195/45/14. Sounds around the same gearing as me really, no point pulling too much in second!

Slight update:

I have done quite a few miles on this engine now, although i still have a few teething problems I'm pretty happy with it. I dont know if its because its still not 100% setup but it does feel abit slower 50 - 60mph but theres not much in it 0 - 50mph. However this might be down to the exhaust seriously blowing and i have a bad air leak somewhere.

Plans are to strip the inlet gear off at the weekend, new throttle body gasket. check the dewedge on the TB to try and solve this high idle...

I also have a mk3 oil breather that i want to put on as the ABU one is fooked, I'll be putting the Golf afm back on too. I really need to get the exhaust sorted too, its driving me mad banging on the ARB and under the car  shame i carn't afford a full custom.

Crap update

Ill take some pictures soon, managed to sort the exhaust out. The centre section rubber had snapped so its not resting on the ARB now!

I bought one of these a few weeks ago. Then regretted it as I rememberd how much effort it required when I did it on my old GT.

I started doing it Saturday, was determined to fit the motors without drilling holes but its not possible. So out came the drill

Image128.jpg

I managed to drill the door and frame without taking the doors off and its a really good place to run the wires (will take pics tomorrow) Was quite impressed as I really couldnt be arsed but my dad gave me a hand and only took a couple of hours to fit once the holes were drilled

I then stripped the inlet off to see if I could find out why I had an idle of 1600rpm, was glad to confirm the inlet hadn't cracked but still left me puzzle. The only thing left was the TB gasket but it looked alright. I could wind the idle screw all the way in and it make no difference! Turned out it was the pipe work that goes to the ISV :smoke:

I have driven it for about a month with it idling like that...needs must and now its idling spot on it doesnt even feel like its started at the lights  Its definetly given me a boost of motivation and it actually feels quicker now!

Standard gt tyres are underrated. Get some deecent ones and they're all you'll ever need. Only problem is they don't look great...

I have two good brand tyres on the front and they are really good for what they are, infact better then the 185/60/13 Yoko A539's i had on my old car in the wet.

i think when you get to 113bhp+ you'll prob be kicking 140ft/lbs so i think it would be 1.6 that would take it ( no Replacement for displacement ).

Really? That's very optimistic for a petrol engine, 113bhp/140lb ft sound like diesel figures to me. I reckon with 113bhp you'll get around 110lb/ft. Are you sure your torque figures aren't in Nm?

And, by the way, last time my G40 was put on the rolling road it made 136bhp and 139lb/ft. With a G40 you get power from the off, GT engines need to be ragged a bit. I don't disagree that there's no substitute for a big engine, but I think your figures are really optimistic.

Cool project by the way Carver.

@Mattdavies - I've just converted your 128lb/ft torque figure from Nm to lb/ft.

128 x 0.7376 = 94.4128lb/ft

98bhp and 94lb/ft sounds about right for a n/a petrol engine.

Yeh alex it is right, i have the graph somewhere of mine and its running 98bhp and 128ft/lb. so yeh with i reckon with 113bhp it will be between 130 - 140 ft/lb

i dont want to come across cocky and implying you dont know nothing ,i totally understand where you are coming from but it is a very torque engine

I don't understand that at all, a naturally aspirated petrol engine wouldn't kick out a considerably higher torque figure (in lb/ft) than horsepower. I've never seen another car like it. They've not revved it very high either - your power is dropping off after 5,600rpm, my GT used to rev to 6,500 odd. Yours is a petrol, right?

Obviously I can't debate your graph, but as far as I know your car is totally unique if that's the case. It just makes sense that the graph is labeled wrong and the torque figure is in Nm not lbft.

well they as standard put out 75bhp and 100ft/lb !!

yeh well I'm want it to rev higher but dont know if it worth it and how it would be achieved. But the low down grunt makes it great to drive round town !!

It is totaly posible, it exhaust manifold and intake manifolds dramaticaly affect torque. My car is running 67.9 bhp and 81 lbft. The torque increas was seen after I fitted a 4 branch. SO I would be asking what mods have been done in this area.

I'm running larger throttle body and 4 branch de-cat and 2" exhaust !! and bigger injectors soon.

If you want it to rev higher you need to look into getting the bottom end balanced, mine revs pretty quick up to 5k I'm using a mk3 flywheel too. I'm hard pushed to hit the standard GT limiter because it takes so long to get from 6k to 7.5k. Also a lairy cam would make more power up the top end but then you lose some of that low down grunt.

For me to go back to a GT now where you have to rev them it would most likely do my head in! Its half the reason i can drive mine pretty quick all the time and still get 35mpg + because you dont have to be in the higher revs all the time.

Its a really good all round motor with 100bhp, not fast but quick enough even more so in the mk2/mk3 polos. :)

i do want more top end and i love the noise it makes at 5k , deffinatly going to get cam and some headwork then ill get it all set up and see what it is running !!

Now i have a job i can start spending more on my car again,, looking for about 120bhp and 140ft/lb+
