merc looks shit, rat should be left to the aircooled and american street/rat rod scene, or to atleast a car pre 1990!

at least this place has some sort of sense of humor...

this is gonna go down to personal opinion, but i reckon some cars look sick "ratted" when time an effort is put in to preserve what is already there an accentuate the rough edges, but most "oooh, i'm bored i dont have much cash, i'll just matt-black it" cars look crap.

rat-rods ftw!

some cars do suit being ratted, there is no doubt about that, but that merc is not in the slightest bit rat, it does look cool its just not rat.

BTW, here was my ''oooh i'm bored and i don't have much cash'' moment...

It looked a proper rat sat on my drive all bashed in :crybaby: Dont diss it either!

That merc does look shite. Why bother. Its not as though the owner even washes it lovingly with nitromors!

well it was, but i was just saying that i had one of them ''i'm bored with not much money, matt black'' type moments, and that i'm not one of the clean freeks.

Heres my "Rat" look Mk3 GT:

wrong on so many levels, and the merc is fucking hanging, honestly seriously hanging.

any aircooled head would laugh at that complete wannabe juxstaposition of trying to portay a rat look with it being painted on.

all really down to personal opinion, the only two watercooled dubs ill consider proper true rat look is the orange irish mk1 with every panel dented, rusted and broken, small light jobbie, a blue mk1 on p sluts which has had so much of the arches cut out it actually sits on teh floor, rest of the car is gracefully rusting away due to the american weather.

a roof rack, some odd wheels, white walls and other tat doesnt mean a ratter.

and i remember some kid who posted my new content, and he had a 6n he had spent thousands on, kw variants, porka rims and he said getting some chrome was rat.

get a grip

Heres a couple more proper h20 rats 8-)

teh 2nd one is the one i was on about, the caddy is j ust rude

Rat cars can look soo good, and I'll bet it nice to not worry about smacking the door into the guardrail at the multi-storey.

Although, I think you need to let it happen, maybe you could get away with encouraging the rattiness, but you can not force it

'make' your rust patches - sand back to the metal where ever you want them, let em go rusty, paint them with wax-oil.

just to add to walshys post...

wasn't having a dig at your mk3, its just that it was/is quite a common look...

got some other ideas for wheels... summat mad.

and the legends that posted the bucket, HELL YEAH!

as for water/aircool rats, well i'v seen good aircools ratted as equally as watercools, but there is something bout the mass of history behind an aircooled rat, the burnt-out westy for example...

paint it matt black with a 4" brush, paint the roof chequered, buy an old steel roofrack, spray the lights yellow, and shove some widened steelies on it without centres!

lolz.

agrred with the above totally.

i cant believe people are having a convo about deliberately making cars rusty!:thumbsdown::shock::roll::retard:

I'm lovin the rat look at the moment.

Some water cooled ratters can look good, even newer cars, but not manufactured rust.

The way i see Rat look is, a cheap way to get into the scene. The car if done right can be unique and eye catching

without spending huge wads of cash.

My Mk1 polo will be going down this route for this very reason. I have GENUINE rust and faded paint.

Go for it dude, rat look all the way!! Just leave out the faked rusting.

that merc isent rat thought its a wanna be with a expensive paint job, as for that mk1 and that caddy now them i like!

mercs wheels are wicked. but the rest is utter shit.

leave it to the air boys

Always loved that caddy^ it's got a beer tap for a gear stick.

As I've said before I hate the term rat, it's a bastardised term for a disrespective view on the original hot rods.

That caddy has standard diesel engine but with air ride and the American weather has given it a finish you couldn't re-create yourself it's more low rider if you ask me...infact so is the golf.

I've read that you can slow down the rust process by rubbing veg oil every few weeks. there was an air cooled geezer doing this because he hated the smell of waxoil. Think he used wire wool to do it.

Read through this and couldn't help but laugh.....AT you, NOT with you!

You're all slagging off the "rat" scene some saying how certain things make a car a "ratty", some saying other things do....

I'm taking a really fuckin good guess here that a lot of people who agree with this crap all moan about everything being "scene" and how the mods people make are only cos they are seen to be "cool"

Well, if that's the case you're all hypocrites!!!! One minute you slag a guy for saying his car is scene, then the next you slag a guy cos he says his car is ratted although it doesn't match your criteria.

My thought on the whole thing is, lets try not to be too judgemental! See things for what they are, not what category you THINK they should be in!

Oh yeah, although the Merc isn't to my taste, i love it! No one seems to be picking up on the whole irony of it, which i'm sure the had in mind when designing it!

Rant over, so flame away!

but when people class there car as ratted and it clearly isent they need a good slap! so it isent peopel catagorising others cars its them catogorising ther own as soemthing there not, i agree with saf! there are onlya few cars that work and others just arent worth it!

Which applies to every type of look.....and that is exactly the reason why we end up with some many car that just end up "scene".

I'm personally not bothered, you could easily say that my car is scene, but that's not why i did it! I just like that look!

People need to either stop rippin' into scene, or start accepting variations are gonna happen!

you seem to have missed my point. sticking a few bits of arbitrary tat on a car doesnt means its rat look, it just means its an individualist statement whatever that be. and then it comes down to personal opinion of people looking at it to determine whether they like it or not.

a barry exhaust, a bit of camo material over the bonnet yellow headlights and a yellow fog thing doesnt mean a cars rat look, not even close. the mercedes just looks like a ott modded merc with a bad paintjob. if i saw that in the street or on the road id laugh, but if the guy likes it thats cool.

however my interpretation of the rat look specifically the cali look came from being around aircooled vehicles as a nipper, so it just seems all a bit wrong on newer cars to me.

Twatti, you do realise that the word "scene" in the vw world is irony in its self dont you? of course vw`s are "scene" who`s owners are infact into vw`s, as they themselves are involved in a scene - the vw scene, thus making their vw cars that they bring with them "scene"

The population of the word "scene" when refering to commen mods is just sad as fuck, and i laugh at people who use the word in a serious manner so hard that i have to touch my nipples to calm myself down

ROFL!!! I can't stop laughing at that comment walshy, funniest thing I've heard in months,i can't say i've ever felt the urge to tweak my nipples to calm down but i might give it a go...

i used to have a car that i referred to as 'rat' i'm a bit wiser now and realise it was just a sh*t heap of a mk3 polo,i too matt blacked that and covered it in some rather tastefull graffiti...now the 1984 Golf i have is a definite original rat, rotten as a swetty pear it is :p

jim

And another 8-)

I think that merc looks ace, the matt black polo with camo on the bonnet and some daft zaust isn't rat, its just erm... individual? (crap IMO)

but i do agree that if your going to make it look rat, at least put some beasty engine in to make up for it. some rat look cars look shit and some look amazing. persoanly i think a 6n would look crap, MK3 would also look crap. tbh, the only polo that would look good would be a MK1, and thats only due to the pic above (they look the same as a MK1 golf to me lol)

Each to there own i guess though.

the 'abused' look is where its at ;)
