the rat look...

Featured Replies

here is my so called rat i haven't done any body work to it the only reason it has a black board bonnet as it was dirt cheap and better cond than mine a roof rack so i can take my sailing dinghy on top extra light so i can see in the dark p slots as i like em rust ,faded paint and dents because its old and gets used. I'm slowly building her up but she is on the road speed is my main objective so she has a fully kitted g40 conversion with straight through pipe stripped out back two bucket seats and a steering wheel its not rat just un finished and being used as a near daily.

Same here,Forge. My engine, brakes and suspension are sorted, and the interior is tidy, clean, and complete. But I've not got around to the exterior yet - patchy light grey bodykit, naked steels, marks where the badges used to be,hanging vinyl, matt roof, rust on f&r valances and big patches of blistered laquer. Its taken 23 years and 145k miles to mature to this state. I hope its not mistaken as 'scene'..

you seem to have missed my point. sticking a few bits of arbitrary tat on a car doesnt means its rat look, it just means its an individualist statement whatever that be. and then it comes down to personal opinion of people looking at it to determine whether they like it or not.

a barry exhaust, a bit of camo material over the bonnet yellow headlights and a yellow fog thing doesnt mean a cars rat look, not even close. the mercedes just looks like a ott modded merc with a bad paintjob. if i saw that in the street or on the road id laugh, but if the guy likes it thats cool.

however my interpretation of the rat look specifically the cali look came from being around aircooled vehicles as a nipper, so it just seems all a bit wrong on newer cars to me.

I do agree that newer cars don't suit that look very well! In fact, i agree with at of what you say.

It's just when people start slating cars purely for what category they put them, be it right or wrong!

The guy with the camo bonnet isn't personally what i'd call rat, but if he thinks it falls into that band, and he likes the look of his own car, then that fine by me (albeit not my cuppa!).

Twatti, you do realise that the word "scene" in the vw world is irony in its self dont you? of course vw`s are "scene" who`s owners are infact into vw`s, as they themselves are involved in a scene - the vw scene, thus making their vw cars that they bring with them "scene"

The population of the word "scene" when refering to commen mods is just sad as fuck, and i laugh at people who use the word in a serious manner so hard that i have to touch my nipples to calm myself down

Kid, i hate the term "scene" as well! It gets thrown around way too much and unless you've done something that no one else has ever done, you always seem to get one idiot who says "That's proper scene that is"

Grrrr, got myself vex'd now......off to play with my nipples

and this is meant to be a car based forum, not a place to post your family photos

lol at the above :-D

anyway, i'm kinda mixed on the 'rat - look' i think it looks awesome and on certain cars it just looks insane, but i just don't think i could do it to my car, i ain't a clean freak but i wouldn't want me feeling like my cars rustin away, that caddy and golf as just 8-) as feck mind

If this is the same car i saw at Knockhill last week...and i'm sure it is...

...It's been HEAVILY lacquered now.It doesn't look lacquered in the first pic though.

Yep that's the same car Scott. Not a fan of either really but think it looks better unlacquered!

Ross said he saw this car too last sunday morning in Oban...

The Merc, The Bucket and The Caddy all fucking ROOOOOOL!

I like ratty stuff but when its imaginative. When its just a car lowered on steelies with some matte black paint then its not really very interesting. Julian with the 'Got Wood' car, its not conventionally ratty but its got loads of interesting touches that make it stand out a bit more than most other cars of that style which is why I like it.

Typical "scene-ratter"

heres my rat

you are rust shouldtn go through at all, you are only having surface rust, just stop sanding when u get past the galvanized layer and if you are that worried about it going through just sand the rust off every month and leave it in the rain and it will rust again over night, my friend has a fully rusted astra that has been full rust for over 9 months and it hasnt gone through anywhere on the car, but please please please dont laquer it or put anything on it because the rust goes a shit brown colour and not a cool orange colour, heres my bonnet which has been like this for about 3 months and hasnt gone through at all and i haven't put anything over it to protect it

Some rat's look amazing, but those sprayed on ones...wtf?

More pics of that Bmw also!

Bugs, campers and caddy look pimp when it's "genuine" rat (Field for 5 years an all that), ratted new cars (paint stripper, toss stickers and roof racks) is just pure face palm.

My 2 pence....

loving the pics. Definatly gonna rat my 6n now.

I think it would take ages for it turn into anything serious. I stripped a bonnet about 2/3 years ago and left it in the back yard. Its facing the wall so I have no idea what it actually looks like. I might pull it out and see, can't imagine it will be pretty though

There are a select few 'rat' cars out there that have sprayed/painted on rust/dirt/grime, which looks proper shit.
