MK1/2/3 owners, would you like a proper roll cage?

Featured Replies

Thanks for that,mate.. I appreciate the group shout, but its not for me. Mine seats more than two people, and weight is important. A mate had a rear cage without diagonal in his mini, and it still took four people. But had he crashed,it would've done more harm than good to us in the back. For the road, you'll want some padding on the tubes along the tops of the doors.

hi mate, what model car is the cage for, are you keeping the dash? if you intend to learn to weld and do some more to your cage it could be a good idea to ask the person doing it if you could be involved/call in/ watch, also ask them if they will be TIG welding or mig, either is fine but TIG is so much neater.

as for the cost, as was said earlier, its a hell of a hard job building a bespoke cage, and material costs are ridiculous. i would offer but i'm flat out at mo

Taking your car in this direction should mean that functionality comes first, not looks.

I would've thought weld-in would be better for the application, but I don't know the facts.

weld in = both :)

You need that for the track too, there are rules as to how close the cage is allowed to be to the drivers/passengers head without foam padding...or at least for competitive motor sport there is.

Have you tried MV Developments on E38?? Their prices seem pretty good.

their prices were bollocks, kept quoting £480 + vat but when i came to book it wanted 1300

they are made by fabricage, so no doubt the cage would be dogs bollocks but a custom cages cage is £1100 +vat!

Polo Performance Services do them as well.

not yet they dont considering he has posted in this thread already!

the car is now booked in st saxon motorsport near maidstone for the 21st

haha yes i asked him aswel, and got the exact same awnser

Before you spend all that money (I'm not going to say don't do it), good luck to you and do what the hell you want it's your car and money. But ...........

If your putting a cage like that in I assume the shell will be completely seam welded and you will be fitting some decent suspension, etc etc otherwise it will be a complete waste of time and money.

For the cost of that cage and the other proposed modifications you could buy an ex cup car or two and have money to spare. You would have just as much enjoyment from that than building what you propose for doing track days.

The cage shown will offer no more rigidity than a good bolt in cage, in fact I would say it would offer less than the Cup car cages that are of a fairly standard design.

I assume you spoke with Mark Lloyd Jones at Saxon, what tube has he recommended as there can be a considerable weight saving in the choice of tube, I would have thought he would have advised some other additions too?

Why do bolt in cages look naff?

the car is being seam welded next week, underneath too :)

the cage will be cds, i cant afford to use anything else, however most of the car panels will be foobarglass!

the problem with buying an ex cupcar is it will be a mk3 coupe, and i want a mk2 squareback :p

I'm also really enjoying building the car myself rather than buying one already complete

bolt in cages look naff because I'm a tart

Do these ever come up for sale though? Would be nice just to buy one.
