Car Tax; Looks like it's gonna get worse

Featured Replies

After reading the new tax prices for the next few years I'm actually quite happy that I own a 1999 car. For the next 2 years my car tax will stay at £120 a year.

My mum on her Focus 1.6 52 plate will be paying £180 a year in 2010

My sister on her Swift Sport 1.6 07 plate will be paying over £300 a year in 2010!

So surely its more of an insentive now to buy a pre 01 car?

Less tax, cheaper to buy in the first place, usually cheaper on fuel (from my experience), and for all us car nuts older cars are more fun to drive than newer ones, and we can fix them ourselves or for very little when they go wrong!

They say we are heading for a recession with all the high living prices and what not. IMO its all down to our dictators governments stupidly high fuel duty and other vehicle running costs!

Think about it, fuel runs this country, every day we use some form of fossil fuel.

But when this country does get that last flush down the shitter the government will only have itself to blame IMO.

are the dictators government trying to say my 18 year old 16v golf is more environmentally friendly than a 04 1.6 ford focus? or is it more of a case that they totally fucked up and didn't think through what they were planning to do, and they don't want to admit they fucked up so are plodding on regardless?

Fucks me off how older, less powerful cars get cheaper taxation.

The amount of peices of shit I see driving around with black smoke pouring out the back of them is stupid.

I feel sorry for people who are not on a decent wage, this must be crippling most people.

Over 80% of the cost of a litre of fuel is tax, it's a joke :-(

Maybe because in the whole scheme of things older less powerful cars are actually better for the environment...

Modern cars are getting scrapped after 6,7 years because it's uneconomical to repair things, they get written off straight away etc etc

Whereas a decent well built 80s car should go on forever and ever, probably churning out a fair bit of CO but still nowhere near on the scale of building a whole new car.

This is why a W124 Mercedes E300 diesel is the only way forward.

it isnt the world tho, its just here, I've said it before, my brother lives in australia and he doesnt have any shit to put up with, the roads are nice, traffic is calm, and respect the law, you get a ticket for parking on pavements, parking on wrong side of road facing wrong way

some see that as "money grabbing" i dont at all i see that as great common sense, and makes road users more alert and aware of their doings!

we can post and moan on forums all we want, but it gets us nowhere, i just want out of this country, it isnt a country anymore its just an island.

10 years ago maybe it could have been saved, but its gone, diluted, wasted, there is nothing good to look forward to!

Too right they are!

My dad drives an 06 plate BMW 320D and he gets about 37 -40mpg a week on a tank of fuel, costing him about £80.

I drive a Mk4 1.4 16v Polo doing exactly the same journey everyday as my dad, i get 42mpg every week and only pay £51 a week.

But because my dads car is a BMW and a diesel its seen as the 'Better more environmentally friendly car' which is quite frankly complete BULL!!

It's not about the older cars being anything to the environment. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!

Simply, there are more "modern" cars on the road than older ones, hence more money going in the Goverment Funds. It's all a numbers game, don't be fooled into thinking it has anything to do with cars, motorist well-being or the environment. They have access to the DVLA database, so can look at things like numbers of cars registered in that year etc etc

They need extra money to fund all the fuck up's they have made & poor decisions on where they have spent the tax payers money. They need more money back in to keep things running & are looking for the easiest way to do it......the motorist is one of the ways they can claw back money easily
