wish i had an more productive update!

the lupolo is still sitting there waiting patiently on the drive. for the blue mk2 to get out of the workshop!

hopefully going to grab the rebuilt block and head this week from my engine builder, so i can build it up, which having that done should spur me on to get the car into the unit to strip and reunderseal the car and prep/spray it now all the weldings done.

failing that ill just stick the engine in and exhaust on, do the bare minimum for an mot as all the suspension and brakes are already fitted, and rag it around and give the peril some love, welding and a respray over winter

cant believe its been 2 years since i last did any work on this! crazy. its now the longest I've owned a car (4 years!)

anyway due to the peril needing more love than previously expected and now becoming a full restoration and my need to have at least 2 cars running, so one can be a backup, means that I'm going to throw the mk1 together hopefully for all types.

all she needs is

rear axle sticking on

suspension refitting

an engine throwing in (after toying around with a few ideas, I'm just going to launch the 1.3 engine I've got spare from the golf in there)

seats

exhaust

and itll be good to go for an mot!

Have you ever driven it?

I've sat in it and made broom broom noises if that counts! but nahh never driven it!

went a bit mad yesterday and instead of just fitting the rear axle, bolting it all up and putting the car back on the wheels, i spotted some rusty chassis legs so decided to strip the underseal off, which lead to me cutting the lower rear valance off too!

tonight i need to get another set of axle stands as I'm all out, can whip off the shocks and beam and start cleaning up along the full rails and inner rear arches.

tomorrow ill get my drill from home and cut out the spare wheel well and hopefully should have the floor painted by the weekend, ready to be sat on the floor again!

Cut the rear valance off

Started grinding down the stitch welds around the wheel well

And out came the wheel well

Replacement tanks aren't available so wire brushed the old tank, came up real good

Nay Painted it up with epoxy mastic

Started stripping back the rear arches, it's in a lot better condition than the mk2

More tomorrow :) hopefully get the stripping finished ready for some paint tomorrow

i can take credit for the tank and looking good saf al be down soonish to sort some more stuff out , and am waiting on tez to get back to me as i want them blue mk3 doors if the price is right , its gave me the car bug again coming to the unit am gonna weld in my seat mounts tomoz !

No worries about the brace need to make up a skid pan of sorts and put the 15s on as I keep cathrin the floor on te golf think its the rear box mount as it sits so low!

it meant i had 40 percent less floor to strip! plus it was a little rusty on the edge where it met the lower rear panel and i want to eventually make up a diffuser for the rear.

removing the rear panel and the spare wheel well also meant i could get some proper decent access to the chassis legs to make sure they are golden for when it all gets painted up.

yeahh thats the kinda thing I'm on about! :) I've seen a few people say that the boot isnt deep enough bla bla unlike on a 6n ect, so it could be an option to just extend the spare wheel well across (obviously leaving room for the exhaust)

may try it one day if i ever get one that runs properly

I've been thinking of extending the exhaust so there is another tailpipe coming out the other side of the car, so each tailpiece would be in a section of the diffuser. lots of food for thought!

i was considering a racing fuel cell but no need now that the tank has cleaned up good! that was only really if the tank was a state as you cant get new replacements for the mk1!

are you going for a motorsport kinda look then? twin pipes would look savage with a diffuser!

yeah probably gonna get a set of JDM arches from Simmo, would run berg but i couldnt ever justify spending silly amounts on wheels to fill the arches, and wish crappy mirrors i wouldnt be able to see how big the arches are and would probably end up murking them off stuff

Good progress dude, looks bloody clean and solid in the wheel tubs

Pleaaase do berg arches! :-D they look sooooo much better, get bigger mirrors if thats the problemo and band the original steels crazy width

With the rear chassis legs, how badly were they surface rusted/ pitted and you reckon they will need welding at all? both of mine have surface rust and slight pitting where the underseal has began to peal off and I'm dreading to find out what state they will be in once a wire brush touches them

I'm not a fan of banded steels anymore after running them on my golf, they are far too heavy. I have a set of eclats, and one of the banded steels weight more than all 4 eclats!

they still look sick, but its not about the unsprung weight!

chassis legs should be OK, they werent badly pitted at all, just flaky underseal like yours. i looked through the access holes from the boot into the chassis legs and they were stuffed full of wax, after picking it all out, i expected to see rust on the other side of the metal, which meant i would have been cutting sections out and replacing, but I think itll be ok after wire brushing and a lick of paint. will stuff a load of wax back into the legs when I'm done.

i gave everything a good poke with a screwdriver and sharp beasty chisel and picked off loose underseal first before busting out the wire brush.

definatly do it sooner rather than later mate, this mk1s in far better nick than the mk2s underside, which to be fair when i got the mk2 it already had massive holes by the rear axle mount and i just had it patched up to pass an mot, so now its time for a proper repair

as for the bergie arches, id struggle to get in and out of my unit, and driveway!
