Ahh i see, makes sense, and eclats look awesome on mk1 polos and golfs anywho... and yeeeh cant imagine berg arches being ideal for general use  they're so tempting though, regret braking my red mk1, i shoulda turned it into some crazy bergie..

Yep will be doing it soon anyway, plan is to take the mk1 off the road in september as i've clocked up a fair few miles and restore it, all dependent on whether my bro lets me take over the garage, which hes only storing a pile of shit mk2 golf in anyway  Luckily i cant see any holes at the moment but I'm sure once i start digging there will be all sorts of wonders awaiting . . . for now i will probably pop the plugs open in the boot and have a little nose and stick some wax in there too then

cheers dude ;) good luck with this beasty

Was refreshing to see a rather healthy filler neck panel, one small hole to contend with and I'll be cutting out the old breather pipe and replacing with some flexible hosing. Any ideas on the best tool to get into the nooks and crannies that are still covered in underseal! Lack of access for a drill or grinder is a pain

So bye bye towing eye

Holy moly!

No pics from today's endeavours but I took the axle stand spot welds out and I need to remake the end of the chassis leg! I'll get some pics tomorrow, but before I chop anything else out I'm going to put a brace between the legs where the spare wheel once was and one at the top hopefully should keep it all in check after i start cutting out the rot.

I never knew they were axle stand mounts, thought they always looked to flimsey, learn something new off the Safmiester everyday! ;) (then agian the sills aren't upto much better standards )

Looks like your having fun!

Exactly what I was thinking. And then I thought hang on a bottle jack? Holes at the front of a mk1 golf are similar.

Regarding underseal removal Jim had an awesome little set of wire wheels for a drill, had tapered pointed ones for corners etc. Obviously you lack the brutality of 10,500 rpm with a knot wheel, but its still quicker than scraping!

Blow torch/heat gun the fucker as well if its stubborn.

Bracing the chassis is gonna be needed. It's scary once you start digging, Jims mk1 rocco got a bit like that.. where do you stop?!

Good work though dude! 8-)

Are you relocating the flexi filler neck?

The drill with a wire wheel was mint but its circular, need a couple of qthe blob type ones , need a trip to toolstation me thinks,

I know what you mesn mate i was ready to dtick a rear axle on and thought i should give it a once over while its in the air and bam loads more work. Enjoying the welding just need to make up a sheet folder see my blog for a diagram i found on the web and some panel beating tools!

What kinda spec stuff should i get for a strut brace at the top rear and a rounded edgef rectangular brace for between the wheel well? I haven't really got a clue

nothing majorly happening with the lupolo as the golf was taking up my time sorting out bits for its impending mot.

got the passenger arch painted up as i had some paint left that was already mixed up

2012-07-03214308.jpg

got some more wire wheels and managed to get in some more nooks n crannies.

i need to pull its arse end out a bit more for access as its tucked away in the back of the unit at the minute. but it might be taking a slight backburner (again)

6 months on and the lupolo is still at the back of the unit!

Got access to a donor shell now so can cut some fresh metal to replace the crispy chassis leg and patch the small hole in the fuel filler neck so once that's done a couple of coats of epoxy mastic and some under seal and it'll be axle time.

Picked up a rear disc setup and compensator valve off a mk2 16v GTI which I'm going to fit to the powder coated gt rear axle and new VW bushes.

Just need to pick up a 22.2 mm master cylinder and reservoir now and wait for the brake bits to turn up but the welding will keep me busy for now!

A spare ko3 turbo conversion may make its way in here either with the mech head engine from the golf or a py lump

More updates in the week

Good man!

Get the sill covers off the ex-Teg mobile!

Nice work Saf!

looks pretty solid underneath the rear end.

How did you find removing the fuel tank, did the filler neck come away easy enough?

  • Author

real easy dude, it was easier on the mk1 than the 2 and 3. I had the axle off at the time. Its just the usual kink at the bottom of the filler neck thats annoying, super easy with two, but i didnt struggle on me tod :)
