Any updates on this? :D

alright nick, updates, erm sweet fa tbh!

need to get the rear drums built up on the powder coated axle then get the car up on stands and fit new brake lines and the rear axle, i want to whip the tank off and give it a coating of por 15 and underseal.

still have loads to finish off man to be honest haha, i think I'm gonna get up there at the weekend and have a sort out and get the car back out in the open to have a play with her again

woop

Ah, still a fair bit of stuff to sort out then.

Its gonna be mental when its done, can't wait to see it! :)

Did you decide on a colour scheme for it in the end?

Going up tonight to get the rear of the car jacked up, get the rear axle off and consider taking the tank off, might do that as a job for when it undergoes a full resto.

as for colour scheme nahh not really, I've decided its probably better to get her mot'd and running first rather than bothering now about getting it all painted up perfect.

My initial aim is to get the new rear axle on, brake lines made up, seat rails welded in for bucket seats, finish installing the engine properly (fit alternator, driveshafts, front brakes, pedal box) and I'm not considering a megasquirt for the engine management, a friend said he could make me an inlet manifold for bike carbs so if that does come about ill just get a megajolt for the spark. if i do go bike carbs tho I'm getting a foam filled engine bay as i dont want another inflamo situation again!

Cool. I'm well impatient and would probably paint a car first. Its good to see that you have your priorities in order.

You've had an engine fire? How did you manage that? :?

long story haha

things are progressing now, rear axle off, brake lines removed, new ones are gettin measured up tonight, and rear axle bushes have ordered

r1 itbs and fannymold arrive this week too wooop woooop

oh and I'm buyin a derby =O

I've got a fire extinguisher now a wessner one, my mate told me its worth plumbing it in but to be honest id rather have it so i can grab it and run and spray exactly where i need it, knowning my luck the places i tell it to splat in the bay wont be near a fire that happens!

haha yeh boi!

Tonights jobs are to strip the spare GT rear axle i have for stub axles, back plates and other gubbings, measure up brake lines so i can get them cut to size and flared, get a cutting disc so i can finish the modifications for the drivers side engine mount.

I have to also split a gearbox and all the ancillaries of a GTI engine I've got as thats going at the weekend, good times!

Oh and if any one knows the VAG part numbers for rear axle bushes it would be muchos apprieciated!

think I've found a relatievely cheap solution to the hydraulic clutch, and setting the brake bias for the huge ass brakes at the front and relatively small brakes the back. i think that since these come with the master cylinders too, its pretty bloody good value!

That top left jubilee clip is doing my head in man! its nit in the same direction as all the others AHHHH!

It'd probably foul the throttle linkage otherwise - its the other seven that are facing the wrong way. ;)

  • Author

aye thats right, the throttle linkage fouls is that jubilee on the top left is fitted otherwise.

the bottm left and 3rd from left at the bottom you wouldnt be able to get a screwdriver in if they were fitted in the same position as top left as the manifold studs would be in the way.

its fine ocd boy =D altho ye can get you tools out whenever you get to see it!

naw man, been too busy at weekends either working on the coupe or seeing this lassie, but the polos on the road and I've sacked off the bird, so good times, if my sis aint coming up at the weekend ill go mess about on it, take the engine out and strip the gearbox off it, need to get hold of a mk3 box so i can do away with the universal pedal box idea, saves messing about with hydraulic clutches and shit mk5 boxes anyway.

i might strip down the inner cvs, clean them up and regrease them as its something I've been meaning to do, and get the back plates painted up and start building up the rear drums.

i also want to shift the red golf out of my unit so i can put charlie murphy in there and get engine and box out of there to change the crankshaft oil seal, new ss mani as my current one has been merked and i really ought to measure the exisiting shims and calculate the new sizes i need the tappet noise has been driving me nuts.

it also needs to go in for welding too but i dont really want to start that until the insurance claim is worked out

  • Author

well been at the unit today, cleaned up and painted the back plates for the drums, hopefully get round to ordering the new drums, shoes, brake cylinders and bearing kit to put them back together.

the axle needs to be removed anyway as the rear inner arches need wire brushing, and a couple of small holes patching up, and as the tank will have to be removed, i might bin it and go for a marine tank in the spare wheel well.

removed the original inlet manifold and offered up the itbs but noticed that the inlet manifold seemed to be fitted the wrong way round

DSC01848.jpg

the actual inlet manifold would bolt on, spun 180 degrees around, as the three widest spacing bolt holes attach at the bottom of the head, the three shortest spaced bolt holes attach at the top.

so surely the throttle bodies are fitted the wrong way round, as you would expect the fuel rail and injectors to be at the top! so I've flipped them around now anyway and will bolt them up in the week.

i think when the inlet manifold was built this was an oversight, as the vacuum take offs are now at the underside of the manifold, but thats no worries, just means they are slightly hidden from view.

  • Author

cleaned up and painted the backplates and refitted them to the new gt rear axle. unfortunatly haven't got round to ordering the new shoes, cylinders, drums or bearings yet but the polo had to be made mobile as the golf is moving into the unit very shortly.

so its just rocking old drums, bearings, no shoes and old rear axle bushes as the brand new vag ones i had fitted got donated to the yellow peril for its mot. so 8 weeks with the arse on axle stands and shes now back on the ground, albeit unfinished, but the next task was to go about removing the engine and box

DSC02096.jpg

but got distracted and trial fitted the itbs and mani

DSC02089.jpg

DSC02089.jpg

DSC02092.jpg

DSC02097.jpg

whipped the itbs off and went to bolt up the inlet manifold, needed a couple of bits shaving off a couple of mm as they were being obstructed by the bolt holes for the factory engine crane hooking points and the bolts cutting down by 8mm as the new inlet manifold is around half the thickness of the old.

DSC02098.jpg

the main reason i went up was to remove the gearbox and use a polo mk3 box.

However the old gearbox mount has been cut out when they were welded extra box section into the front panel

so I've gotta weigh up the option of a hydraulic pedal box or getting a bit of the chassis leg cut off a scrap car and having it welded in.

if i could weld myself the latter option would be the one id choose, because i would still retain the mount for lupo gearbox so could pick and choose.

argh more decisions
