Ah,so you're the one who owns that 'Tina van - its quite famous. My dad had an early MK3 when i was little,so I've a bit of a soft spot for them.

But i find the best is the MK2 Polo,its what I've chosen,and your one just looks so right. The Kadett comes a close second,though.

got the polo back in the workshop over the break for some more mods and a few repairs

front suspension needed doing as i had fitted the new rears a while back but not got round to doing the fronts so as i had pull the car down there anyway due to an annoying running problem thought it would be a good time to get the front end suspension done .

made a start on the front end of the polo and stripped out all the front suspension only to find a few more bits than expected where knackered

there is some work to be done in the engine bay here how it did look :

front legs looking very second hand these will be converted to adjustable platforms

lower arms need replacing hadn't even thought about those and I had to cut the track rods off as they weren't budging so they also need replacing while I'm at it I'll be fitting a new set of front wheel bearings

after a little cleaning :

front disks are verging on being dangerous as they are wafer thin

new ones to go on though so all's good

new inserts and coilover conversion kit

new strutbrace fitted though now the air filter no longer fits so a new air intake will need to be made

the new Weber which turned out not to be the problem with the engine as its still playing up new ignition module going on as well as a top end rebuild as I removed the rocker cover earlier to start cleaning it up and notice the engine is full of mayo despite only having had an oil change oh well more work I guess

the Weber has helped to make it go much quicker now though

made up the coil overs yesterday and got them fitted on today

had to modify the stock top mounts as the alloy tops from the coil over kit won't fit the polo

struts are now fitted with just the new track rod ends left to fit , they should be in stock tomorrow so I'll fit then .

sat the car down on the ground just to get an idea of the new stance and all seems to be just about right . it may need a little tuning as far as spring rate and such go but it definitely sits much better than it did . only major job left now is the engine which I'll make a start on in the morning

there were still a few small jobs left to do before it was finished ready for the rest of the season so back in workshop it went .

fist job to sort out was the exhaust this has been trouble since we brought it generally poor quality and easily broken the system its self I had basically remade from scratch using just the boxes supplied with kit as it was such a bad fit we then bought the new 4 branch header of which the lack of fit equaled the system so more modding was needed to make that fit as well but its always had either a leak or a crack appear one after the other . the exhaust is now fixed thanks to a new stainless 4 branch and sounds much better though I still had mod that to make it fit (does anyone make a performance exhaust for a polo that fits first time ::) )

next on the list was the air intake the old air box was really ugly and no longer fitted due to the strut brace so a quick trip to the local breakers this morning found a nice top for the carb from a single point injected golf it needed a bit of adapting but it works pretty well .

finished off giving the car a good wax and getting some pics ;D

not the retro show at the pod but i did go to the retro rides show at gaydon with both the mk3 estate and the v8 van .

the van is off the road at the mo as I'm building a new chassis and bigger engine but i will be doing as many shows as poss with the polo and the estate then next season it will be the turn of the van again and a T5 powered 244 I'm working on

I am envious on many levels of your skills and the fact that I can't afford the wheels, the paint job, coilovers (just got a lowering kit) and the exhaust. I do however have the weber and the brake up grade so I can't complain.

A lot of us have had mayo in the filler cap with the cold weather and short journeys(from my pespective) which can contribute to moisture not burning away. As long as coolant isn't dropping.

You might get carb icing with-out the hot air pipe, I put a bolt on filter on for the summer although your set up looks more efficient.

cheer's for the comments guys means a lot to me i hope to get it to alot more shows this year .

I didn't do many with it last year as i hadn't finished some of the bits front suspension made it a bit bad on a run and the old interior was just nasty due to a leaky roof plus a few other bits i wasn't happy with . its now running a GT interior which is much better and the coilover front suspension is much better .

re: the coil overs they are quite easy to do stripping the front end down is probably the hardest part of the job but once all the old inserts are out its just a case of stripping off the old spring perches and welding on the adjustable sleeve if you want the car to be able to drop really low you need to lower the steering arms down as well

its nice to see a car being done properly, bodywork is fantastic, suspension is sorted, engine coming along well, i have the same Weber conversion, would be without it.

what spring rate and length did you go for on the front? 8" 200lb is where i'm looking to start.
