For the Polo, use a 5w-40 from here, the gearbox should be fine unless the shifting is a bit lumpy

For the Golf I would use the same as above but change more frequently if tracked

most protective engine oil?

Make: VW

Model: Golf

Year: 1997 (MK3)

Engine size/type: 1.9SDi (Diesel)

Any mods: Cold Air Feed, K&N Panel Filter, Diesel Pump slightly turned up

Type of use (road/track): Road, Motorway, Rarely Hammering it

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used)

Currently using fully synthetic (cant remember what though), Mileage just over 170K Miles

  • Author

The norm would be for someting like a 10w-40 semi synthetic with regular changes, as an upgrade for better protection a 5w-40 synthetic can be used. Have a look at the likes of the Motul 8100 Xcess 5w-40 and the fuchs titan Supersyn Plus 5w-40 here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

hi

vw scirocco 1.8 carb 1988

no mods

fast road

i dont know the oil temp

doesnt have any form of oil cooler (some sciroccos have one on top of the filter)

its coverd 230000 miles so i put some 20w50 in it as that was advised to me by a spanner monkey 8-)

thanks rich

  • Author

If the engine is in good shape despite the high miles a 10w-40 semi should be ideal with regular changes, if it uses 10w-40 then up it to 15w-50. No need to go as far as 20w-50.

Make: vw

Model: polo

Year:1990 mk2

Engine size/type: mk3 gt engine 1272

Any mods: air filter, 4 branch with s/s system skimmed head and flywheel

Type of use (road/track) road and the engine has 250miles to be run in

atm I'm running 10w40 castrol gtx but i think i need more protection

  • Author

Stick with the GTX untill run in is complete.

Then switch to a 5w-40 full synthetic, something like the Motul 8100 Xcess 5w-40 here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

A decent 5w-40 synthetic changed every 10,000 miles or once a year, what ever comes first.

Brand wise, Motul, Gulf, Fuchs and Silkolene well worth a look http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx
