  • Yes - its just passed its run in mileage (1000 miles without breaking 4000rpm - 3000 miles with no topspeed runs and regular checkes of the oil level) Probably going for the 5w-40!

  • i use Castrol 4T (for bikes) 10W40 Mikey for your engine is better if you use bike oil becouse is made for high temp and revs

  • Hi I would use a 5w-40 synthetic and service it every 10k/annually rather than using a VW long life service schedule. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx Out of those, the best ones are t

10w-40 or 5w-40 synthetic is ideal for the engine. for the gearbox we recommend this http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-981-fuchs-tita...sion-fluid.aspx Can you get anything similar in Malta?

The Mobil 1 is a very good synthetic indeed so if you are happy with it then sticking with it is fine.

As for other choices the only way up from there is to a 5w-40 ester based synthetic such as the ones you can find here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-953-ester-synthetic.aspx

oilman,

can you please confirm the amount of gearbox oil for:

polo, 1.4s, 2000 W, mk5 6N2

(I think i'm right in saying it takes 75w-90).. but it's the amount please as i thought i read somewhere 3 litres-ish, which seems a lot.

thanks.

2.7-3.1ltr according to my book.

yeh i thought so ..i took my car to the garage with 5l of the damn stuff for them to change for me, and according to the marker down the side they've only used about 1.5l.. i think they've just done a top up and not a full change, the sneaky bastards.

thanks for the reply btw.

..an update re the above:

i phoned the garage up asking why they had only used 1 litre (not even 1.5 as i thought yesterday), and the guy told me it only takes 1 litre of oil, and that it literally came up to the top.. just wondering why various sources say 2.7 - 3.1l (which i admit did seem a lot when i read it.)

any views oilman, thanks ? (i just want to be sure there's enough oil in my gearbox, which is lumpy as f**k already!)

  • Author

Perhaps the 2.7 is a dry capacity, when you change the oil in a gearbox you never get it all back out again so only a ltr changed.

Could it be that they didn't run the box up to temp before attempting to draining it?

POLO: MK2.

ENGINE: 1.3

MILAGE: 104k

I'm not sure weather to run a 10w/40, 15w/40 or a 20w/50 because of the high milage.

could you give me some advice please?

10w-40 semi synthetic with regular changes is fine.

  • Author

10w-40 semi synthetic is fine with regular changes, if you want to go better then look at a 5w-40 synthetic such as these http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

hi oilman

would you think it is ok to have mobil 1 0w40 in a polo 1.4 1998 135000 miles stem seals ring new or you think is better a 5w 40 fully synthetic.

Thank you in advance

  • Author

hi Guy,

which one do you think is better the 0w/40 or the 5w/40

thank you in advance

  • Author

Either is fine, not a lot of difference between them in the UK.

Mobil is a very good quality synthetic, which 5w-40 synthetic are you thinking of?

hi Oilman

as 5w 40 i was thinking at the fuchs Titan Supersyn Plus SAE 5W-40 ( knowing that fuchs is what VW fills the car when they come out of the factory)

thank you
