Oil advice and recommendations here

Featured Replies

My engine is a car engine, and it uses a car thermostat and car camshafts. It therefore exercises car temperatures and car revs.

I'll likely destroy it using it as a commuter with bike oil in it. You do not put bike oil in a car.

I'm currently running in,have had smoke issues on 10w40 semi for 400 miles but have done a couple more hundred on cheap 20w50 and its taken to this far better. Will continue until the engine is fully run in,then will move to SM/B4 rated 5w40 fully synth which i normally use.

  • i use Castrol 4T (for bikes) 10W40 Mikey for your engine is better if you use bike oil becouse is made for high temp and revs

  • Hi I would use a 5w-40 synthetic and service it every 10k/annually rather than using a VW long life service schedule. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx Out of those, the best ones are t

1.3 mk2 polo. Engine is pushing 23 years old. Not driven hard really, but do close to 80 miles a day. Little tappy on start up. Recomendations?

Also, what's best for running in a rebuilt engine (1.6, bike carb, 4 branch to 2" straight through, gt cam, all new seals, valves, bearings etc)? I'm concerned about the extra wear the additional torque may do

Any mods: no mods.

Saw a few other recommendations but unsure if they were for commuting such a distance daily. Cheers.

edit; if I could grab a gearbox recommendation as well that'd be swell.

Hey,

So I'm servicing my car on Monday and was wondering what's the best oil to use.

Websites have recommended I use 5w30 Synthetic, but when I last changed the oil I went for 10w30 part-synthetic.

Which of these would be better?

Make - VW Polo
Model - 6n 8v
Year - 1999
Engine size/type - 1.4 APQ

Thanks!

Hi

The oil you need depends on the service schedule the car is on. If it is on an annual/10k miles service, you need an oil that meets the 502.00 specification. If it's the variable service schedule, you need an oil that meets the 504.00 spec.
The 504.00 oils are all good oils, so make your decision based on any brand/price preference you have. With the 502.00 oils, go for a 0w-30, 5w30 or 0w-40 or 5w-40.
Cheers
Tim

I don't have any service history, and at a guess I would say it's been at least 2 years/20,000ish miles since it was last serviced and I'm now doing a basic one myself to change all filters and and engine oil etc.

Yours will be the annual service, the variable service is for the newer models :) 5W/30 will be fine
