No the bite is quite high. But the clutch has been done this easter?? And dont you think its weird how it doesnt do it when the engine isnt running. And also how it is ok again if i turn the engine off and on again after a few minutes??!!

Think it is the linkage ball, thats the common view on both here and polo3. Can anyone tell me who to replace it? Is it suitable for a novice to do? Also i cant find the part on vagparts or gsf, what is it called exactly? I have just been searchin for linkage ball??

well because the clutch isn't spinning when the engine is off, you can generally change gears without pressing the clutch when the engine is off.

If you mean the ball at the bottom of the gearstick then I think they just call that a "gearshift repair kit" or something like that. I'm not sure if they even sell the ball on the linkage near the gearbox under the car though.

I dont think its the ball at the bottom of the gearstick:

"its a round ball the size of a golfball and its surrounded buy a square metal cage attached to a rod that goes from the underbody of the car were the gearshifter would be in the cabin".

I'm not sure what is meant by that statement, whether he means that it is under the gearshifter in the cabin or the rod that its linked to is under the gearshifter, if anyone understands me??!!

Apparently its a volkswagen part only, so I'm gonna have to get a new one from VW, pricey pricey me thinky :S

Grrr so confusin, just taken it to a guy on the same business park as me and he said it has to be somethin loose in the box if its intermittent. Someone else suggested the clutch release bearing but the guy said it wouldn't be that.

So is it a gearbox out jobby?!

Was the clutch cable changed when the clutch was done?

If it was the ball bit I would have thought it would do it all the time.

I dunno, I'm just severely pi***d off that i have only had the car a couple of days and already its being undriveable. Not cricket

Screw it, its just going into a garage. Not having a great day anyway and when i mess about with my car in a mood i end up doing more harm than good lol.

So yeah, money straight away, to be expected on a car of this age i suppose.

Yea that what you would think but wasn't the case with me, couldn't go into any gears then leave it a few minutes and it was fine.

Changed the clutch cable and it was fine from then after.

I had a similar problem to the one you describe, a few years back. If i rember correctly i changed the clutch and it started doing it so i changed the cable and that seemed to solve the problem... if not the plastic ball on the end of the gear lever as siad above. It is at the bottom of the gearstick and you get to it from inside the car. A garage will probably tell you its gearbox as they want your ££££'s...

Hmmm ok i will bear that i mind. Yeah I'm just gonna see what this guy says, i know it doesn't need a new gearbox or clutch so he can stop tryin to pull the wool over my eyes with that one.

The thing that gets me is that its intermitent. Spoke to a guy at vagparts n it confused him too lol

I think your right. Its got to be the clutch cable. I took it out for a drive and when it started doing it again i pulled over to see how low bite was and basically it was on the floor. Can bite moe when the engine has got warm?? Wel anyway i set off and when it was refusing to change i jut stamped on the clutchpedal and it changed. So I'm thinki clutch pedal. Anyone know a part number / place i can get one . . fast?

the 2nd one, first one is for 1994 onwards (i.e. mk4s)

FIXED, it was just the clutch cable .

I was expecting an "I told you so" style post goose haha
