The Dirrtbox - Polo G40

Featured Replies

The D16RRT box broke again :( What about if you do what I'm planning on doing to mine, keep it in a garage or lock up, buy a small cheap daily and rebuild everything on the G with new bearings, seals, gaskets, etc

Might be more expensive but at least once it's built, you will practically have a brand new G :)

I'm not talking about my piece of shit, because I have no love for it right now

I would however like to know how a bit of metal gets in here :?

2983_90614460925_627380925_2849072_49518

Could be abit of piston? Or charger?

Have you had compresion tested yet?

I'm assuming what I'm looking at is a lambada.

That bit of metal could be a sign of something wearing that shouldnt be or some left over swarf from a head job that found its way in.

I went away for a few days and came back to that for sale thread and thought it was a joke, until i read it. All mk3's (especcialy G's) are there to swallow our hard earned cash but we would all miss them if we got rid of them.

Charger? Really :?

No, I got no one to look at it for a couple of weeks now. So it's doing what it does best :disgust:

Edit: Yeah, that;s my old lambda! Meh... I'm not talking about it because I don't want it but I've gotta keep it or I'll regret it and only want it back

So I'm putting up with it, as much as I want to give up

Oh and my old lambda was lose...

Mines just hagning in, pipes cracked just in front of the cat and my centre box has a rust hole appearing. so in welsh mechanical terms its fwcked as no amount of sticky tape or cable ties are going to work.

You can never tell where bits of metal have come from unless its obviously blown up in a hardcore way tbh, which doesnt sound like yours has. Only way you will find out is by doing these tests on it and stripping it down for investigation

Its like all the little bits you find on the magnetic sump nut during an oil change.

screwdriver bits for example. :oops::lol:

Test are going to be done when I can next get her looked at, which won't be for a few weeks

I know what you mean Cymro :smirk:

Stick a big magnet on the arse of the sump to be safe! and give it a wee oil change after the magnets been there a few days should get any other wee it out.

You dont want shit like that floating about incase the oil pump picks it up and sends it to the head or charger.

it looks a clean bit of metal in the pic and if its in the exhaust it would have went rusty very quickly so it must be recent :paranoid:

could it not just be a bit of thread off the lambda? hope mr man picked it out before re inserting!

I will "wee it out"

I know

Gah, tell me about it :paranoid: It's not that I don't believe anyone it's just my head finds it hard to deal with how summit got in that little space and got stuck in the first place  Well that's what I thought?

Fuck that haha I have a brand new Lambda in now

sounds like a 1341 on the cards.....

just thought it can be out the oil as no way for it to really get in the air system unless a seals popped or its off a piston or piston ring but thats unlikelyas it sounds like its running happy enough! hmmm.

just put it down to randomness 8-) chances of that getting caught in there as it blasts out the engine must be 100 to 1.

guess by your on here all day count, your works as exciting as mine today!

It's got to be the original lambda looking at the state off it when it came out haha and it wasn't even connected properly anyway, was proper lose :retard: Which couldn't have been helping

What happens when a seal or a piston goes? Side effects?

It's running, it just doesn't sound good at all  I haven't even tried to start it since that day

Haha correct! Works slowing anyway, I'll be out of a job soon enough I know, the moneys not coming in  I'm chasing debtors aka "give us the money you owe us bitch" for my accounts and the other company today, whoop whoop, not!

piston going / rings gone = loss of compression, compression + boost puhing past the rings into the bottom end breathing heavily through crankcase breather and blowing the dipstick out with oil too.

But I drove 2 mile and it was fine? Well in and out of sounding like a scooby as I had no choice

Note: That picture off the lambda was BEFORE it spat that oil out the dipstick

I changed the sparks and lambda, ran sweet as a nut and that happened about 3 hours later whilst chilling on the motorway at about 80

i can't see any pics at work, get someone to take the breather pipe of while it's running and see if it's breathing sufficiently.

if it is i'd suggest rings are on their way if it continues to blow out the dipstick.

tried burning out the breather on one of my old one's but turned out to be rings....

the other block that i just put up for sale had the same symptoms but a blocked injector made it run lean and melt a piston causing the same.

i know this may be unrelated and my experience with forced induction is limited on the g40 but could it possible be a burnt or leaking inlet/exhaust valve? it would cause some of the symptoms heard on the running engine(misfiring, sounding like a subaru or tractor, lack of power inconsistently) the fact the car runs warm with no fan, and maybe the use of incorrect plugs for heat settings could have brought it on, the engine is about the age these items do go if not replaced before and with more boost etc it will run warmer still. i've had a valve go on to 8v lumps b4 and it does sound as described by laura, and its not always the worst case scenario with engines. that said, i'm not a g40 expert and as i've said have a limited experience with this engine. just a thought to add to the pot is all.

Cheers Matt

I actually think you're right now tbh, unless someone else has got something to add or disagree with?

If a piston has gone, you used the phrase "i'd know about it" and did you say it wouldn't fire, is that right?

I started it yesterday, apart from my rev counter gone again it was ticking over normally, gave it the tinyist rev which wouldn't have even reached 2 and it is well and truly fucked and mis firsing like a mother fucker

So I'm looking at a head rebuild if the valve has gone?

Ouch

Which I can't afford, I only have a £100/150-ish a month spare going atm which doesn't include saving for up coming festival and paying off previous G debt

My first 1 years NCB for the G doesn't hit till July so have to keep it insured until then so I don't lose it

May have to SORN, save and then fix - Which is pushing me more to fix, sell and get a CRX (Blame the newbie haha)

You can't sell it!

Not until after E38 - Cleavage shots on the G ;)

Don't be disheartened too much doll, I feel like selling mine all the time and it's not even a G :(

Just think about the smile it'll put on your face when it's back and running again!

get a CRX... nicer looking and handling motor if you ask me (runs and hides)! SORN is good, you can claim some of your tax back towards help fixing the problem?

get a compression test. it could be a valve causing the misfire - i just rebuilt a polo 1l head (as well as a few g40 heads) and that had a burnt out valve, luckily the valve seat was undamaged.

a valve would cause the misfire but not the pressurising bottom end. that would only be the things i mentioned in the previous post.

there are a few possibilities of potential cause including;

blocked injector causing misfire and lean on one cylinder melting the piston or the rings to the piston.

pump failure or other component to cause air fuel ratio to run lean causing the above.

my money is on piston and or ring failure, 'piston gone' is a very general term and could be of varying severity.

i'd say the rings have melted to the piston on one cylinder in turn melting the side of the piston causing low compression heavy breathing and possible misfire under load. also allowing compression + boost to push past the damaged items into the bottom end causing it to breath heavy and blow out the dipstick as mentioned.

does the oil smell of fuel? (depending on how long it's been ran broken)

if you do a compression test i'm sure it will be down on one cylinder and the head will have to come of for investigation.

can you get someone to pop the head off when/ if you find it's down on compression?

this btw is all assuming the bottom end is pressurising and the first thing you need to do is get a compression test, it's quick and easy and will tell you alot.

compression tests are as scary as STD tests..

the results can change your world..

i remember when i got my compression test in the UK when my engine blew..

that was fun!

hada drive back to hole-land on 3 cyl:(

good luck dirrty

Haha that was great

It's finding someone who can help me, as this will get to a point where it's too deep for my usual legend of a helper

Plan is to clean breather pipes and get a STD test done

STD test straight away!!!

Compression test will be quick and easy way to find out the cause and ultimately the extent of the problem. Its the only way to go. Hope the car isn't too feckered :-(

Rubbish trying to find the cause of engine trouble so definately get it compression tested asap.

GOOOOOD luck!!
