205, great handling nippy and cheap. Cheap upgrades from models further up the range as well :)

AX GT / GTi, not quite as good on the handling side but very quick for a 1.4. Strip it out and you'll be touching 640kgs, although I'd add a cage as they are flimsy as fook.

what about an old mini?

Assuming he wants it driveable for £500 a classic Mini is pretty much out of the question! Try looking for a Citroen ZX GTi, if my mind serves me they have the Mi16 motor, go well and being French and flimsy should be light a decent handling once it's stripped. They don't fetch strong money either due to being ugly as fuck and pretty much un-noticed by the masses.

Yeah, a Mini due to their iconic status goes for way too much money.

£500...you can barely buy a decent set of suspension/tyres for that. You'd be better saving up some more money. An old raft will only cost you money, you've still got to keep it in road worth condition.

Buy an old race car, you can pick up a MG Maestro race car for well under a grand with all the Leda suspension, or get an ex Alfa championship car, lots available for under a grand, or an old XR championship XR2 I just missed an immaculate one that has a lorry load of spares went for £600.

You will be loads quicker in a sorted race car even if it has half the power of some old stripped cheap road car, why waste your time and money when you can just get in a drive something that is built for track use.

It really is a false economy to try and build a cheap track day car out of an old cheap road car.
