UPDATE:

SHE'S DEAD .

Bad road conditions (flooding) yesterday caused water to get into the intake, and I Hydro-locked my engine.

The car is now in Enschede (2 hrs from where I live), and will not move.

I removed 250ML of water from the intake plenum, removed the spark plugs, and tried to start the car: The engine wouldnt move... This means that the connection rods are bent.

I am looking at solutions, but things are tough:

Insurance wont help me at all, and my car is miles away :(

I found a replacement motor (ARC,GTI) for a good price but Ill have to do some serious maintenance on it (timing belt, oil flush)...

I am heartbroken that I am back to a polo with a dead engine again...

Haha, thanks guys..

Its really nice of you all to be so supportive (you guys are like an emotional Bra at the moment!)..

Good news:

I bought a replacement motor from a crashed 2001 GTI...

Unfortunately, this motor has another 50,000 km than my old motor, so I will be doing a bit of maintenance before anything else.

A friend of the Dutch Polo Club will be Porting and Polishing the cylinder head, and this should result in quite a bit more torque, a more progressive torque curve, and a few extra HP.

I now have spare parts from my original ARC/GTI motor, so I will be (within the next few months) getting the flywheel lightened as well.

In other words:

With this swap, it will get stronger and faster... again.

Jeroen (he has the 500+Hp Polo ..cant find the link to his thread here though..) was kind enough to give me the space and time to work on my Polo on Saturdays, in Andelst (Big thanks, Jeroen!) and Jarno6N (a good friend of mine) should be 'erbij' ;) (with me).

This is the car where my 'new' motor came out of:

41359_1442183938996_1365000123_31335642_

The guy walked away from the accident, unhurt... the drivers side foot well was reduced to less than half the original size!

Brake disk broke in half, etc etc... amazing!

and here is the motor itself, in the back of my girlfriends Punto:

47798_1442186219053_1365000123_31335644_

Right now my car is in Enschede(border of Germany and Holland), so I will be driving over there tomorrow, and then will go directly to Andelst(middle of Holland) to drop off the gigantic motor breathing down my neck.

In principal, the rebuild will take two working days, but, since I have done this engine swap before, I know that these things arent as simple as they seem...

I will keep you guys updated!

AND THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT:)

Gentlemen we can rebuild her,

Good luck - won't try and top the lovely poem!

"New" GTI engine had burned exhaust-valves as it turned out, plus there was no head-gasket between bottom-end and head! Also some bolts which attache the gearbox to the bottom-end snapped and were still in the bottom-end :-(

Luckily though, that was all BS, and Rinder yet again discovered he was too much a believer of all the BS the dutch were throwing at him

But as an up-date, "new" ARC is headless and dropped off for some good ol'fasion P&P, Rin's mk4 was delivered by the towing company, the front end of his mk4 was taken off, and Rin got "punked several times. Come on Rin, grow a pair will you!? 8-)

New head will be totally cleaned, P&P'd and slapped back on

New timing belt, head gasket, head bolts (didnt know I had to buy new ones:() oil, and coolant

Oil pan swapped into the 'new' motor, as the current one has been ripped open from the crash of the donor car

and it should then be placed in the car!

Hope i can do that all in one day, next Saturday...

Thats all for now guys!

lol at your antics, and the old pair on the scoots.

Good work dutch chaps

Rin, you're gonna make it :) You already have experience from the previous swap, so it's kinda easier to predict some obstacles for you. Anyways, I hope I'm gonna see your GTI running on a track soon enough :) Cheers :D

EPIC!

i want to see the state of the original motors internals!

Trust me, when jarno is around... antics are to be had for sure! haha

thanks...i hope so. Not having a car is putting a strain on my relationship with a gf who lives 2 hrs away and also my bank account... so I hope its finished sooner than later haha

but yea, I am cautiously optimistic it will be done soon.

thanks for the support:)

Ill make sure to get some photos ;)

AND an update

I asked my friend who is doing the P&P to make some photos of the things he was doing to my block (oh?) and he posted them up a few min ago!

Ladies and (but mostly) Gents!

She is back:)

After hours of hard work, many emotional ups and downs.. the car is back ...and stronger than ever (literally)!!

Got her done last saturday night, after a hell of a rush to get it done.

I will post the 'first-start up' video as soon as I make it all nice.

After hours of work, and getting the motor up in the car, the starter motor would spin, but the little gear would not come out to meet the flywheel!

Nightmare!

We took it apart, cleaned it, and put it back in (hours of work, when the engine is already in the car).

BUT

when I tried to start it then, the engine came to life within 2 full revolutions or so (not bad for a first start for a motor that was completely apart)!

My alternator makes a horrible noise, due to the water damage, most likely.. but aside from that.. the car pulls stronger now!

Also my fuel economy is back where it should be (41.5mpg, highway), and it does feel more powerful than before, which is a huge bonus;)

I also got an App for my Android based phone, that tells me all kinds of great data (live) from the ECU:

Coolant temps

Intake Temp

Fuel trim(not entirely sure what that means actually haha)

Engine load

Exact RPM

Intake pressure

Spark advance

and a whole buncha other shit i cant remember..

Once I edit the 'first start' video, i will include it here on the thread.

I am really thankful for your support guys.. its been a shitty month to say the least, and its cost me alot of money..but I am glad to say that my car is back, and therefore...my life can continue as it should.

Best wishes to you all! And ill update with the photos and vids ASAP

;)

Awesome, glad to hear things worked out!

Any more info on the phone app? Got me interested!

yeah definitly get some infor up about this App!

  • Author

thanks guys ;)

Ok! Here is the guys website:

http://torque-bhp.com/

To get the app, just go (on your Android phone) to 'market' and then type in

'torque'. The creators name is Ian hawkins ;)

I say that the only limitation of this app is actually our ECU's.

Apparently only the 9n's and up models get ECU's that give every little bit of detail (such as current gear, and exact fuel econ, etc).

But the app reads every live parameter that our ECU's can offer.

I have on my apps display:

Page 1:

RPM(exact)

Load(In %)

Throttle(In %)

Timing Adv(In Degrees)

Coolant temp(In Degrees C)

Intake Temp(In Degrees C)

Page 2:

0-100 KM/H (not sure how to work that just yet.. it seems to 'arm' itself only when the wheels stop spinning)

1/4mile time (same as above)

Trip km/L (it can also do MPG, however i think our ECU's dont give this information out, so its not entirely accurate)

Fuel Trim 1 and 2 (although I have no idea wtf that means, it seems to work, as it shows 99.2% for both)

OBD Speed (the exact speed your wheels are turning, not GPS speed)

GPS Speed (self explanitory haha)

You can make all of these show up as graphs, or digital read outs, or even gauges (even though I am not a big fan of those... most of mine come up in either raw numbers or on a graph).

The app will allow you to seek and clear fault codes from your ECU, and so far, all my codes have been correct (same ones I got with VAG-COM).

Another cool feature about this app is that you can get it to record data, and you can get that put into KML files (files you can open in Google Earth, so you can see exactly where the data was recorded..) which is great for the track! Its like a low grade version of telemetry!

There are some other features like alarm settings (you set a parameter, and if your car passes that, your phone starts to beep letting you know, etc) that I am forgetting but the free version is quite good, and I paid for the full version, and can say that for 3 euro or so, its a great app!

You will need to buy a bluetooth OBD2 adapter which is about 28 euro or so, from Fleabay :p

I got a shitty Chinese one, so the quality is a bit... crap, but it still works :)

I cant really complain about the app, as I said: its the ECU that limits us as to what we see.

Ill update when I figure out how to use the 0-100 feature, and the HP feature as well.

So how does it connect to the ecu?

Ill try and find a link for you, a bit later today, after work :)

Cheers pal :)

Rin your an absolute Leg-End! Once your back racing you will have to get some data up :)

What android phone u got btw?

OK! here is the exact OBD 2 adapter I am using for the APP (funny.. its dirt cheap compared to mine.. haha)

Stixie, its funny that you mention my leg-end status AND ask which phone I have haha

its this one:40446_1420483676503_1365000123_31275261_

Funnily enough, this was 2 days after I got THAT phone (HTC Legend/Leg-End), at the race track :p

That's just surreal lol I must be psychic!
