Any thoughts on the 156?

Yeh its not German but i have a secret crush on most Alfa's particularly the 156, however I've not owned one so if some of you have any experiences with Alfa's good or bad please share..

I'm thinking of buying a 2.0 TS 16v manual but having trouble finding one with the spec i want. 1997-2002 model

I own a Mk5 gti however want a second car with more space and around £1k - £2k. Just fancy a change from the norm

Sorry the V6 and GTA will be too thirsty, i think the 2.0 16v would suit me fine. 155bhp, 0-60 in 8.4 seconds

they're there, just not where you`d expect them :-)

Another vote for v6 here

i love most things italian, and that does include alfas.....

The v6 is the way forward, sound soo nice, oh and ironicly, the electronics in these are german haha

Yeh the rear door handles are subtly hidden in a small panel in the corner of the rear window, look closley around the black plastic bit.

The 2.5 V6 that your all going on about is actually around the same as the 2.0, so maybe ill check them out too, cheers guys

Well I asked you the question if you joined for that info or not didn't I?

Anyway, i've had 2 mates who always complain about the problems with the Alfa's they've owned. However, the funny thing is they still love em and ones had 4 Alfa 156's although not V6's.

The older ones seem to have most problems especially with electrics but pretty much anything goes wrong on them. Parts are quite expensive too and you're not likely to find parts readily available at scrappy's (well not around East London anyway from personal experience). Your best bet would be to find a good example thats well looked after and has service history. V6's are usually the best maintained but thirsty as you say.

Considered a 147?

To be honest mate I'm not too keen on the 147, i reckon the 156 and gtv look better, just personal preference.

Went for a drive tonight in a mates 2.0 manual. Its fast enough, revs well and sounds pretty sick (similar if not better than Honda's vtec sound)

He said if i get a 156 to get a manual box cos the auto is wank and selespeed is jerky in 1st gear.

The 147 has always been the uglier one lol but better looked after as not mainly owned by sales reps when new. Saying that the 156 and GTV look really sweet. As said before they can be a nightmare if you buy the wrong car but for driving experience they do always out a smile on your face as it did when I borrowed my mates for 2 days.

The 2.0 TS engine is great if looked after, I've got a '99 Spider, I love it, I've had it just over two years and its been more reliable than any of my vw's

Just make sure the cambelt and variator have been done, just had mine done and it cost about £650 inc major service
